Volume 1, Chapter 17 – The Vampire Wants to Make Money

“A job?”

“Yes. I want to keep studying by reading Grimoires too, but at this rate, I’m going to go bankrupt, so I need to earn some money.”

“Huh? But if it’s Fiene-sama, surely money would—”

“It’s not like that at all.”

After talking with her some more, it seems Chris-san genuinely thinks money just sort of appears on its own.

Chris-san was born a commoner, so it seems she didn’t receive much education.

However, she had talent with the sword, so she entered service at a young age, became a knight through sheer ability, and then climbed all the way to Holy Knight in no time.

By the time she learned how to spend money, she no longer had any financial troubles.

And since everyone around her after that was wealthy nobility and royalty, she apparently ended up with a horribly warped sense of money.

“I see. So you’re going to put the results of your studies to use right away? As expected of you.”

“No, that’s not it.”

“Huh? But you were studying so diligently! Don’t tell me they made you study useless things because of some half-baked curriculum? How awful. I’ll cut them down right no—”

“W-w-wait, please! That’s not it. I properly learned useful things. I understand medicinal herbs, medicine, and magic potions just fine. I’m really grateful I got to study something so worthwhile.”

Yes, the content itself was very useful, and I did learn from it.

“Then, why?”

“Just because I studied doesn’t mean I can make potions now.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes. To make potions, besides the knowledge I studied, you need at least two Skills: Alchemy and Medicinal Enchantment. And if you want to make healing potions, you also need Healing Magic.”

Chris-san looked like this was the first time she’d ever heard any of this.

This was knowledge I gained from studying, and I’d properly learned it.

“You can obtain Alchemy by taking on the Apothecary Class, and Medicinal Enchantment requires the advanced Class, Magic Apothecary. So even though I have knowledge about medicine, I can’t actually make any. That’s not enough to run a business.”

Incidentally, I heard that to become a Magic Apothecary, you also need to raise the Skill Level of the Enchanter’s ‘Enchant’ Skill, so actually making potions is probably still a long way off.

“I see. Fiene-sama. Then, what exactly do you intend to do?”

“Well, I think it’s better to start a business with something that doesn’t require inventory or capital, so I figured I’d start out as a wandering Healer.”

Yeah, when it comes to making money fast, this still seems like the quickest option.

“As expected of Fiene-sama. Leave it to me! I’ll arrange all the necessary permits and such immediately, so please wait in this room today.”

Saying that, Chris-san dashed out of the room.

Feeling a vague sense of unease at how weirdly familiar this scene felt, I watched Chris-san leave.

◇ ◇ ◇

A-a-and this is how it turned out. Sigh.

Now, let me explain what happened.

Chris-san did indeed get an independent Healer’s business permit from the royal palace in no time.

And she even arranged places for me to visit as a Healer.

Two weeks’ worth.

How in the world did she Manage to arrange all this in such a short amount of time?

Yes, Chris-san is competent.

Well, aside from jumping to conclusions, being unable to do math, having a catastrophically broken sense of money, and overlooking the important details, that is.

And this time, she did take me to places that genuinely needed a Healer.

She even got the permit issued on the same day when it would normally take a week with a regular application.

Up to this point, everything was perfect.

But hey. Chris-san.

Why did you set up a route that has me running around to three different places in a single day!?

I’m still Level 1, you know! I only have 22 MP!

Even with the lowest-MP Healing Magic possible, 22 people is my limit.

And yet, the moment my Mana runs out, why are you handing me an MP Recovery Medicine with that huge smile on your face!? Why are you only competent at times like this!?

Why are you looking so proud of yourself!? Stop it!

This stuff is super bitter and tastes awful, you know!

And one bottle costs 2 silver coins, you know!?

And you know I use about 3 to 4 bottles per location?

I’m burning through almost 2 gold coins just doing one day’s rounds here, you know!?

And why would you tell them beforehand that they can just pay whatever they feel like!? What are you even doing!?

Thanks to that, I’m barely making any money at all.

The more places I go, the more money I lose!

Huh? The last stop today is an orphanage? Wait, that’s definitely not a place where I can charge people money, right!?

Ugh, everyone’s in rough shape.

From kids with scraped knees to kids who were obviously pale and sickly!

If I see kids like that, I can’t exactly not heal them, right?

Sigh… this place alone burned through 4 MP Recovery Medicines.

Huh? The payment is 3 copper coins? Ugh, come on! They barely have anything to spare in the first place, so of course I can’t take their money!

“No, there’s no need for payment. Just seeing the children here healthy again is more than enough for me.”

Ugh, seriously. No more orphanages from now on!

“Fiene-sama!” “Ah! Saint-sama!”

Chris-san and the sister from the orphanage both looked deeply moved.

Then, the last girl I healed came trotting over to me.

“Onee-chan, thank you so much!”

“Yes. You’re welcome.”

Ah… somehow, I suddenly felt really rewarded for all of this.

…Huh?
