Volume 5, Chapter 29 – Battle at the Bottom of the Valley
“Wow, there are so many of them that it’s actually repulsive.”
“There are black things swarming all over the valley floor. Ugh, it’s gross…”
“With that many, it makes sense why their numbers aren’t dropping. Are they multiplying down there?”
Those were the reactions of myself, Lu-chan, and Chris-san, respectively.
Guided by Duyinxi-kun, we had arrived at what appeared to be the stronghold of the Undying Beasts.
The valley floor was roughly 40 to 50 meters below us, and those Undying Beasts were packed together in a dense mass.
“Ugh, they’re just like cockro—”
“Shizuku-san, you can’t say any more than that.”
“I-is that so?”
“It is. Absolutely. There is a law that says if you finish that sentence, they’ll multiply thirtyfold.”
“I-is… that… so? I don’t really get it, but I understand.”
Phew. That should have snapped the flag that would have certified them as “G’s.”
Eh? Superstition? Hmm? Too late already?
No, no, I really think that mindset is what matters in these situations.
“Now that we’ve confirmed the situation, shall we head back?”
“Ehh?”

Duyinxi-kun looked dissatisfied.
“We can’t exactly play around here with that many Undying Beasts—er, monsters—around. I’ll play with you once we get back, okay?”
I crouched down to meet Duyinxi-kun’s eyes and tried to persuade him with a smile.
“Really? Really-really?”
“Yes. I promise.”
“Mm, okay! I’ll go back!”
With that, his mood improved instantly.
Good, good.
“Well then, let’s head back. We need to report this to the General.”
“Hmph, that is unnecessary.”
“Eh?”
When we turned around, the General was standing there, clutching a massive amount of weapons in addition to his spear-axe.
“Well done, brat. Now, Saint, let’s go.”
“Eh?”
The General spoke in his usual tone, and then, as if he were a sumo wrestler hoisting a straw bale, he scooped me up onto his shoulder and leaped straight off the cliff.

“Fiene-sama!”
I could hear Chris-san’s scream—or something close to it—echoing from above.
“Wait, wha! Wha! Wha!?”
“Close your mouth. You’ll bite your tongue.”
I have no idea what the logic was, but the General descended the cliff as if he were running.
“Hmph!”
The moment he landed, the General struck the ground.
A shockwave rippled out in concentric circles from the point of impact, blowing away the crowded Undying Beasts in one great sweep.
The beasts within a radius of about 20 meters around us were sent flying.
“Hmph! Hmph! Hmph!”
The General swung his spear-axe wildly, completely disregarding my presence.
“Wait! I’m right here!”
“Dodge it then. If you can’t, crouch down so you aren’t in the way!”
I hurriedly crouched and deployed a Barrier to shut myself inside.
“Hey! Refill! Do it now! There are too many! A sword alone won’t push them back!”
“Agh, seriously! Who do you think is responsible for this!?”

I hurriedly replenished the mana in the General’s spear-axe. Meanwhile, arrows—likely Lu-chan’s—rained down from above, turning the beasts into ash.
I quickly created a Defense Wall over my head. Immediately after, there was a clink sound, and it seemed something had been deflected. I didn’t see what happened, but that must have been it.
“Hmph! Stop talking about such trivialities. Hmph!”
I mean, sure, maybe now isn’t the time for this conversation, but it’s incredibly irritating when he’s the one saying it.
“Hey! Saint! What is this ‘Blessing’ of yours? Why must I have this ‘refill’ done so many times?”
The General questioned me while slashing through the beasts.
“I’m Enchanting it with my Purification Magic. When the enchanted object touches something that can be purified, the Purification Magic activates. That’s why the mana must be replenished as it’s used, or it’ll run out.”
“What!? Saint! Why didn’t you say so sooner!”
Suddenly, the General started shouting in anger while fighting.
What is with this guy?
Every single time, I cannot fathom what triggers the General’s anger.
“You didn’t ask, General! Besides, I don’t even know why attacking with a weapon enchanted with my Purification Magic works when normal Purification Magic doesn’t!”
“What!? I knew you weren’t suited for combat, but hmph! Your attendants, hmph! Are utter fools! Hmph!”
“Eh?”
He suddenly started insulting Chris-san and the others.

“Please don’t speak ill of my precious companions. And is this really the place to be discussing this?”
“What’s wrong with calling the goldfish droppings clinging to the Saint just because she was chosen by the Holy Sword ‘incompetent’? Hmph! Hmph! Hmph!”
“Wh—”
As he spoke, the General continued to cut down the beasts leaping at him one after another.
However, perhaps the mana had run out, because although the beasts were cut down and blown away, they didn’t turn to ash and began to regenerate.
“General, the refill!”
“Saint. No more refills are needed. Just blast Purification Magic into every beast I cut down.”
“Eh?”
“I told you to purify them. Did you not hear me?”
“Purification!”
I cast Purification Magic on a beast that had begun to regenerate.
A light of purification enveloped the beast.
With a definite sense of confirmation, the regenerating beast turned to ash and vanished.
“That is how it works. Now stop idling and start purifying!”
Leaving those words behind, the General charged straight into the swarm of beasts.
