Volume 5, Chapter 39 – The Endless Monster Rampage

General Lu Fei had slain the Goblin Lord. I heard the news while I was in the middle of treating the steady stream of wounded being brought into the first-aid station.

A few hours had passed since the battle began, and the good news reached my station just as it was becoming time for lunch.

“Does this mean the battle is decided?”

“It would seem so. Chris-dono and Lumia-dono will likely be returning shortly as well.”

“Alright, in that case, I’ll just treat everyone all at once without worrying about my MP. Hah!”

I cast Healing Magic on all the wounded brought to the station simultaneously, treating them in one fell swoop.

A soft light enveloped the entire station, and the injuries healed before my very eyes.

“Haha, Fiene-dono’s Healing Magic is truly formidable.”

“Healing everyone at once consumes a lot of MP, so I don’t usually do it. Now then, everyone, we’re going to have some lunch. Come on, Shizuku-san, let’s go.”

“Understood.”

We left the first-aid station and headed for the dining hall.

◇ ◇ ◇

I received a dish consisting of noodles in a salty soup made from beef bone broth, took a random seat in the dining hall, and began to eat.

The taste was neither great nor terrible, but I suppose this is what the usual meals of ordinary soldiers are like.

Just then, the General arrived, having finished his work.

“Hm, Saint. A break? I heard a considerable number of people were brought in.”

Given the General’s blunt tone, for a moment I wondered if he was telling me to stop slacking and get back to work, but surely that was going too far. I corrected my thinking and replied normally.

“Yes. The station was full of wounded, but I’ve already finished treating all of them.”

“What, you’re finished already? That’s unexpected.”

He really was saying it. Tsk.

“Hmph, well, fine. The Lord that crossed the southern river has been slain. With this, the Goblins should be nothing more than a disorganized rabble. We can leave the rest to the soldiers.”

“I see. Thank you for your hard work.”

“Yeah.”

That’s good. With this, Chris-san should be able to return safely.

“General, this ended far more simply than I had expected. Were Goblin Lords not known for their high intelligence, often acting in ways that outmaneuver us?”

“A Goblin Lord is still just a Goblin. It seems he came up with a strategy of placing trash that uses bows and magic in the rear, and having other trash protect them, but that was the extent of it. Something like that is just crushed head-on. How boring.”

The General declared this with an air of genuine boredom.

“I see…”

I hope that’s the case.

I prayed for Chris-san and Lu-chan to return safely and quickly as I brought the noodles to my mouth.

However, contrary to my wishes—and contrary to the General’s assessment—the momentum of the Goblin assault showed no signs of stopping, and wounded soldiers continued to be carried into the first-aid station one after another.

◆ Christina POV ◆

“Right, we’re going according to plan! Lumia! Provide cover!”

I drew Sesrumnir and charged toward the Lord. A Wind Blade created by Mashiro rushed toward the Goblin Lord.

The Goblin Lord ripped a nearby tree out by its roots and used it as a shield to block the Wind Blade.

To stop my charge, three Hobgoblins blocked my path. They swung the wooden clubs in their hands at me with all their might.

I dodged by a hair’s breadth and delivered a horizontal slash, cutting through the torso of the first one. In the same motion, I decapitated the Hobgoblin behind it, and split the final one vertically from the head down.

“Hah!”

With a shout of resolve, I slashed at the Goblin Lord.

“Grurururu!”

The Goblin Lord swung the tree he had ripped up in a wide arc from right to left, attempting to strike me.

I ducked to evade the blow, dove into his range, and slashed deeply into his thigh, which was at just the right height.

Squelch

I felt a solid impact in my hand; Sesrumnir had sliced the thigh wide open.

“GYAAAAAA!”

Perhaps losing himself to the pain of the cut, the Goblin Lord began swinging the tree wildly, destroying everything around him.

I leaped back out of his range and assessed the situation.

This Goblin Lord had been leading five Hobgoblins, two Goblin Mages, one Goblin Archer, and roughly thirty to forty ordinary Goblins.

Of those, I had already defeated three Hobgoblins.

The remaining Hobgoblins and Goblin Mages had paired up, each leading about ten Goblins to fight in second and third squads.

The fourth squad was fighting the Goblin Archer and other Goblins.

The fourth squad had been slightly disadvantaged, so Lumia was assisting them.

Lumia had summoned Mashiro, and they were attacking the Goblin Archer with Wind Blades.

Ah, the fight’s over.

The Goblin Archer’s head was cleanly severed by Mashiro’s Wind Blade.

“Fourth squad! Once you’ve annihilated those Goblins, move to support the second and third squads! Lumia, return to covering me!”

“Yes sir! Leave it to me!”

“Uugh, yes…”

The fourth squad leader was spirited, but it was strange that Lumia was this drained.

“Lumia! Let’s go! Once we take down this Lord, we win! We’ll defeat him and return to Fiene-sama!”

I spurred Lumia on and slashed at the Lord once more.

Perhaps because he had been dodged by a wide swing earlier, he now attacked with the tree in a way that left fewer openings.

A downward strike came from above.

I twisted my body to evade it, then delivered another blow to the same spot on the thigh as before and ran past him.

“Lumia!”

“Yes! Mashiro, aim for the eyes!”

A Wind Blade was launched from Mashiro, who was waiting at Lumia’s feet, catching the Lord in the face.

Since it was from behind, I couldn’t tell if it hit the eyes precisely, but the Lord, bleeding from his face, clutched his head with both hands in agony.

I aimed for the Lord’s left chest and thrust Sesrumnir deep into him from behind.

With a warm, squelching sensation, Sesrumnir pierced through the Lord’s left chest.

To ensure he stopped breathing, I moved the blade back and forth and twisted it to widen the wound.

Then, I pulled it out and leaped back.

Blood sprayed from the Lord’s chest, and he collapsed to his knees without a sound.

“The Goblin Lord has been slain by I, Christina!”

“””UOOOOOOOOOOO!”””

When I checked my surroundings again, the Hobgoblins and Goblin Mages had already been defeated, and the soldiers were cleaning up the remaining ordinary Goblins.

The remaining Goblins, having fallen into a complete panic now that their Lord was dead, were hunted down by the soldiers, utterly helpless.
