Volume 6, Chapter 4 – Trouble at the Border

Wow, something really crazy just showed up.

While I was staring in shock, the man called the Gate Captain spoke in an even more vulgar tone and threw out a shocking remark.

“Oh, that’s right. If there are women, I’ll personally interrogate them in bed later. Heh heh heh, make sure to keep them in chains.”

“Oh? And who exactly is putting whom in a cell and in chains? And who is interrogating whom in bed?”

Responding to those words, Chris-san asked back in a low voice devoid of emotion.

The killing intent was so intense that I felt a sudden illusion that the surrounding temperature had plummeted. Lu-chan, frightened, clung tightly to Shizuku-san.

“Heh heh heh, what’s this? There are women here after all. Oh, and a high-quality bunch at that; I’m in luck. I am the Gate Captain of the East Gate of the Calvara Guard, Fifth Knight Order of the White Moon Kingdom—the honorable Robert-sama of the illustrious Baron Gavras family! You lot are far too arrogant! Everyone get out of the carriage and kneel before me!”

Hmm, why are so many sons of nobles in this country such weirdos?

Besides, no matter how you look at him, a Gate Captain doesn’t exactly seem like someone important.

And he’s from some Baron house I’ve never heard of, and he’s neither the head of the family nor the eldest son, right? Why is this guy acting so high and mighty?

I was genuinely pissed off and was about to complain, but Chris-san stopped me with a gesture.

“My apologies, Fiene-sama. There are some fools even within the Knight Orders. Shizuku-dono, Lumia, I apologize for making you both uncomfortable.”

As she spoke, Chris-san drew her Holy Sword.

“Hah? This woman drew a sword against me, a knight?! Fine then—”

Before this man named Robert could finish speaking, Chris-san had the blade pressed against his throat.

“I am Christina, the shield of Saint Fiene Argentata and a Holy Knight belonging to the Royal Guard Special Forces of the White Moon Kingdom. Robert Gavras, I arrest you on the spot for violating Article 3 of the White Moon Kingdom Saint Protection Act and for breach of discipline within the Kingdom’s Knight Orders. Knight Joel! Knight Makeel! Knight Thibault! By the authority of Holy Knight Privilege, I order you: restrain this man!”

“Wh-!”

“Y-Yes, ma’am!”

The three knights cornered Robert and pinned him down.

“Gah! Let go! You bastards! There’s no way a Holy Knight and a Saint would be in a place like this! These people are fakes! Hey! You lot, get out here! Restrain all of them!”

As Robert screamed, knights began pouring out from behind the gates and surrounded us.

To be honest, since the White Moon Kingdom is an important place where Shishou and Char and the others are, it’s sad and pathetic that things have come to this.

“Haa… Chris-san, what should we do?”

“I will handle this. Fiene-sama, please be prepared just in case.”

“Understood.”

I cast a Barrier around the carriage and watched the events unfold.

“My name is Christina. The shield of Saint Fiene Argentata and a Holy Knight belonging to the Royal Guard Special Forces of the White Moon Kingdom. You lot understand the implications of pointing your swords at me, a Holy Knight, and Fiene-sama, the Saint, do you not?”

“Ugh…”

At Chris-san’s words, the knights recoiled.

“This is an order. Restrain Gate Captain Robert Gavras.”

“”Uuugh…””

“What are you doing! These people are fakes! Hurry up and restrain them! Joel! Makeel! Thibault! Let go of me this instant! Do you all want to end up in a cell too!?”

“B-But…”

While this futile exchange was happening, a young knight in his early twenties wearing slightly more ornate armor arrived, leading dozens of other knights. He had brown hair, black eyes, and was perhaps slightly taller than Chris-san.

“Ah! Eustache-sama! These bandits are posing as the Saint and a Holy Knight—”

Robert called out to the young knight, but the man ignored him, walked up to my carriage, and knelt.

“Saint Fiene Argentata-sama, thank you truly for coming to Calvara amidst such a tense situation where a Monster Stampede is expected. I am the eldest son of the Capotrias Margrave and Captain of the Fifth Knight Order Border Guard, Eustache.”

The moment they heard that, all the hesitating knights dropped to their knees simultaneously.

“Yes. Um, I am Fiene Argentata. Um, about this situation…”

“Haha. My sincerest apologies. This is all due to my lack of oversight. Knight Thibault, Knight Makeel, restrain Gate Captain Robert and throw him in the cell!”

“Yes, sir!”

“T-This is impossible! Eustache-sama! Those people are—!”

However, Eustache-san didn’t answer Robert’s words at all and instead apologized to me.

“Once again, I am deeply sorry. He is a fool as you can see, but because of his noble status, it was difficult to dispose of him. I will make a final judgment after hearing the details of his crimes, but I expect he will be stripped of his nobility and exiled. He likely won’t be beheaded, but he certainly won’t be acquitted given the current circumstances.”

“I see. I hope that appropriate judgment is handed down under the law.”

“Yes. I am grateful for Saint-sama’s generous heart.”

“As is the will of God.”

By the way, the exchange starting from “under the law” is basically a set of standard responses.

I had memorized them just in case because of the various things that happened in Illumi City, and in the end, they actually proved useful in the White Moon Kingdom.

It’s a bit disappointing that this dialogue I went through the trouble of learning is only useful in the White Moon Kingdom. Oh, wait, I didn’t use it, but there was a similar scene at Matsuhata Juku too.

“Still, Eustache-san, you don’t doubt us at all?”

When I said that, Eustache-san looked surprised.

“Wearing the rosary and robes that prove your status as the Saint, possessing silver hair and red eyes, and being a peerless beauty with slightly pointed ears—the mark of a High Elf descendant… there could be no one else who fits that description except Saint Fiene Argentata-sama. No decent noble would be ignorant of the two current Saints and their Holy Knight.”

“I-I see.”

That’s right. I had completely forgotten lately, but in this country, my “setting” is that I’m a descendant of High Elves.

“Saint-sama, if it pleases you, would you care to come to my estate?”

And so, after a bit of a commotion, we entered the town of Calvara.
