Volume 6, Chapter 10 – The Capotrias Margrave Family
After that, we decided to make our way to the Royal Capital on our own.
Apparently, Vice-Captain Gael had suppressed Eustache-san’s request for reinforcements, or perhaps he had disposed of the messengers along the way, making it look like the work of monsters.
The young Eustache-san had placed too much trust in the experienced Vice-Captain Gael, allowing him to effectively seize control while Eustache-san was reduced, unfortunately, to little more than a figurehead.
By the way, Vice-Captain Gael and the scum Gate Captain Robert were executed.
Furthermore, the twenty-three knights who had attempted to fire arrows even after Chris-san’s warning were also executed, and another 159 knights and officials who had participated in the series of misdeeds were either executed or sentenced to hard labor.
All of this was by Eustache-san’s decision.
Additionally, those deceived hunters were granted amnesty.
Eustache-san, stating that he wished to be held accountable for his failure in supervision, announced that he would resign as the Captain of the Border Guard once the processing of the incident was complete.
He also asked that if anyone questioned us, we should tell the truth exactly as it happened.
According to Chris-san, if this had happened in the Royal Capital, the minimum penalty would have been disinheritance, and in some cases, execution or exile would be possible.
However, since this occurred within the Margrave’s territory, it depended entirely on the judgment of the father, Margrave Capotrias.
Based on the title, he sounded like some noble from the middle of nowhere, but it seems a Margrave actually wields quite a bit of power.

Still, if he can be this honorable about it, I personally think it’s fine to give him another chance.
Since Eustache-san doesn’t seem to be a bad person, all I can do is hope that he continues to grow from here and becomes a lord who acts for the sake of his people.
Now then, having boarded the resumed regular transport, we arrived at Samarca, the capital of the Capotrias Margrave territory.
As I had expected, the carriage stop was guarded by a large number of knights and guards, creating a somewhat tense atmosphere.
After all, a courier had already been sent ahead on horseback when we departed Calvara, and from the towns along the way, escort knights had been attached to our carriage.
Eustache-san must have arranged this.
“Saint Fiene-sama, Holy Knight Christina-dono, and the two attendants, welcome to our Samarca.”
As I stepped off the carriage escorted by Chris-san, an elderly man dressed in very noble-looking attire greeted us.
“I am Gwenael Capotrias, the Margrave in charge of this Dash region.”
“I am Fiene Argentata. It is an honor to meet you.”
“The honor is mine, to have the renowned Saint-sama visit my territory. If it would please you, would you grant me the honor of staying at my manor for a time?”
“I would be delighted.”

“I am most grateful. Please, this way.”
And so, I ended up being looked after at the manor of Margrave Capotrias, Eustache-san’s father.

“I am terribly sorry for the great trouble my foolish son caused you in Calvara.”
Once we transferred to the provided carriage and it began to move, Gwenael-san immediately apologized to me.
“No. In a sense, Eustache-san was also a victim of betrayal. Of course, he cannot escape his responsibility as the leader, but I believe he will overcome it and become a fine man.”
My words might have sounded a little presumptuous, but I thought it would be pitiful if he were executed just to take responsibility.
“Is that so? It is a great help to me that you would say such a thing.”
Having said that, Gwenael-san fell silent for a moment. Was the feeling in his heart relief as a father that his son avoided execution, or was it some kind of calculation? I have no way of knowing.
“By the way, our Samarca is called the City of White and Blue. As you can see, all the walls of the buildings are painted white, and all the roofs are painted blue.”
Gwenael-san changed the subject. Looking out the carriage window, I saw that he was right; the buildings were indeed white.
“They certainly are pure white. Is there a reason for that?”

“Yes. This region produces a large amount of lime. Since that lime has been used to coat walls since ancient times, it naturally led to many houses having white walls. Furthermore, white walls block the strong summer sun and keep the interior of the buildings cool. Considering the aesthetic of the town, the head of the Capotrias family eighty years ago decided to unify all walls in white. At that time, it was decided that rounded roofs should be painted blue, as blue seemed refreshing and fitting.”
I-I see. So the roof color was basically chosen on a whim.
Still, the sight of vivid blue domed roofs scattered among rows of chalk-white buildings was quite beautiful.
While I was enjoying the beautiful cityscape, the carriage carrying us arrived at the manor of Margrave Capotrias.
“N-Now then, Saint-sama, this way please.”
Guided by Gwenael-san, we stepped into the entrance of the manor. There, a line of maids and butlers stood waiting to welcome us.
“””Welcome home, Master!”””
“Ah. I have brought Saint Fiene Argentata-sama, Holy Knight Christina-dono, and the two attendants. Someone, show them the way.”
Then, a young man stepped forward in front of me and knelt.
“It is my first time meeting you. I am Bernard Capotrias, the second son of the Capotrias Margrave Family.”
“Nice to meet you. I am Fiene Argentata.”

And then, for some reason, an awkward silence stretched on.
Why are we all just standing here?
“U-Um, who will be guiding us?”
When I finally spoke, unable to bear the silence, Bernard-san had a look of shock on his face.
Um? What’s going on?
“ Ahem . Hey, Mary, show them the way.”
“Yes. Saint-sama, please come this way. I will guide you to your room.”
“Um, yes. I look forward to your help.”
I’m not really sure what just happened, but amidst a rather awkward atmosphere, we followed the maid named Mary-san out of the entrance hall.
