Volume 6, Chapter 16 – Class Change

After the meeting, we headed to the Temple with the Pope.

This was to fulfill my promise to Shishou and undergo a Class Change to become a Magic Apothecary.

“Now then, once again, Lady Fiene, welcome back to the Royal Capital. It is good to have you home. There is a newfound strength in your expression, and in those eyes of yours. You have become very, very dependable. Surely, this is the fruit of the Gods’ guidance.”

“Yes, I am grateful for Their guidance,” I replied, giving a small, polite bow.

“Now, you mentioned you wished to change your Class?”

“Yes. I’ve finally met the requirements for the Magic Apothecary class, which I’ve been aiming for for quite some time, so I’d like to change my Sub-Class to that first.”

“I see. Understood. To meet the requirements for a Magic Apothecary in such a short span of time… you have worked very hard indeed. Surely the Gods will grant you the profession of Magic Apothecary.”

I felt as though the wrinkles on the Pope’s face had increased slightly, but he spoke with the same unchanging smile.

“Thank you. Also, one more thing—I finally reached Level 20, so I’d like to change my Class from Healer to something else.”

That’s right; since I hit Level 20 a short while ago, I had been planning to switch to a different profession.

“Oh, congratulations! You have indeed overcome the trials bestowed upon you by the Gods. I presume you’ll be taking the advanced class?”

The Pope asked this with another gentle smile, but I shook my head.

Yes, the advanced class for a Healer is Priest, but I intended to become a Water Attribute Mage.

The aptitude Skills for a Priest are Holy Magic and Healing Magic, both of which I already have at MAX, so there is no point in me taking that class.

If I became a Priest, I would learn Physical Enhancement, a skill that consumes my own MP to temporarily increase my stats, but for now, I don’t feel the need for it.

After all, as the party’s healer, I never step onto the front lines, and I can block everything with Barriers and Defense Walls.

There’s not much point in learning Physical Enhancement when I barely move in the first place.

Furthermore, I’ve realized I have absolutely no talent for Swordsmanship, and fundamentally, it’s a bad idea for a healer to be fighting on the front lines in the first place, so I ruled out any frontline classes.

That left Archer, Elemental Mage, or Scout.

However, we already have Lu-chan for Archery, and if it’s scouting through forests, Lu-chan can handle that too. I don’t plan on going anywhere full of traps, nor do I expect we’ll be doing any undercover investigations.

Since Lu-chan handles Wind Magic, that left the Elemental Mage classes for Fire, Earth, or Water.

Among those, Water Attribute Magic would be useful for securing drinking water, which is vital for traveling.

“I intend to change my Class to Water Attribute Mage. In many cases, clean water is incredibly precious, and in places like deserts, a single drop can be the difference between life and death.”

The Pope looked surprised by my answer, but then his smile only deepened as he spoke.

“I see. Lady Fiene, you are thinking of saving people from a perspective far beyond anything we could have imagined. I now understand why Sesrumnir, why Christina, chose you.”

Eh? Ah, no, it’s not really like that…

“Now, you must be tired, so let us finish the Class Change ceremony quickly.”

“Y-yes.”

And so, we were led to a small room in the depths of the Temple.

Just as before, the altar at the back was lined with many statues, and the largest one in the center was the God of Employment ¹ 就職の神様 can be translated as “God of Class Change” and “God of Employment”, but “God of Employment” is pronounced like the Japanese meta phrase (就職 = to apply for a job). —that bald old guy.

I thought this last time too, but since the surrounding statues are all beautiful men and women, this old guy really sticks out awkwardly.

“O God who dwells in the heavens.

Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Forgive the sins of Thy obedient servant, Fiene Argentata, and grant her the livelihoods of Water Attribute Mage and Magic Apothecary.”

The Pope recited the prayer in a flowing tone. Then, he continued with the next words.

“Upon this person—”

In the next instant, with movements even sharper than that day two years ago, the Pope struck the “Boon” pose.

“May God’s Blessings be upon you!”

And with that same sharpness, he performed a Jumping Dogeza with a more refined form.

For a moment, I found myself captivated by the sheer elegance of the movement, but I quickly snapped back to my senses and hurriedly performed my own Boon-to-Dogeza sequence.

As expected, the Pope’s transition from Boon to Jumping Dogeza is a work of art regardless of when I see it.

I feel like I gave it a perfect 10/10 when I left the Royal Capital, but this one somehow surpassed even that.

Not only is he still going strong at his age, he’s actually continuing to evolve… as expected of the Pope.

I really should learn from that kind of drive for self-improvement.

Well, not that I have any intention of practicing the Boon-to-Jumping Dogeza.

“Now, please stand. With this, Lady Fiene’s classes should now be Water Attribute Mage and Magic Apothecary.”

“Thank you very much.”

I stood up as the Pope instructed and checked my Status.

Checking my status, I let out an unintentional, bewildered cry.

“What is the matter?”

“U-um… I did become a Magic Apothecary, but… somehow I’m a Priest.”

“Oh, heavens! It seems the Gods did not permit you to live as a Water Attribute Mage.”

“Eeeeh?!”

The Pope definitely prayed for Water Attribute Mage, and I know he didn’t intentionally do anything weird, but I feel like I’ve been scammed.

“Lady Fiene, it is regrettable, but the Gods desire that you, the Saint, become a Priest. It cannot be helped.”

“Lady Fiene, I am sorry, but this is the decision of the Gods, and there is nothing we can do. The Gods will not permit an immediate re-classing, so for the time being, you have no choice but to hone your skills as a Priest.”

Gnnn… that bald old guy. Isn’t he slacking off at his job?

“Lady Fiene, since you were unable to become a Water Attribute Mage, the offering for that portion is not necessary.”

“Ah, yes.”

I quietly paid 20 gold coins, which amounted to 1% of my total assets.
