Volume 6, Chapter 39 – The Defense of Airoll (4)

After that, we continued dealing with the monsters from atop the gate until sunset finally arrived.

There were zero casualties at the West Gate, the one we were responsible for—a great result for the first day.

However, the perimeter of the town was overflowing with an immense number of monster carcasses.

I would have preferred to burn them, but we didn’t have the luxury of spending time on such leisurely tasks.

We headed back to the garrison after handing things over to the knights who had come to relieve us.

“Saint-sama, thank you for your hard work. I am glad you are safe.”

Captain Lazare greeted us. Alois-san, who had come with him, gave a salute before quickly disappearing back into the garrison.

“Actually, we have some seriously injured people at the East Gate. Could you lend us your strength?”

“Huh? Did potions not work?”

“No. The injuries are quite severe.”

“I understand. The field hospital, right?”

“Yes.”

“Well then, time for one more job.”

And so, we parted ways with Captain Lazare and headed to the adjacent field hospital.

“Where is the patient in critical condition?”

“S-Saint-sama! This way!”

The nurse who saw me immediately guided me. As expected, the staff here are excellent.

“Excuse me!”

“Who is it?! I’m in the middle of an exam—Saint-sama! You made it! Oh, Gods!”

Doctor Melveik immediately struck a prayer pose toward the Gods.

Hmm… let’s see. There was no snap to the movement, and his arm was bent, so I’ll give that a 5. He should try a bit harder.

Wait, that’s not the point!

I looked toward the examination table behind Doctor Melveik. A muscular, bald young man lay there, drenched in a cold sweat with a pained expression. If I recall, was that Greg-san the hunter?

His complexion was poor, and his partner—Dion-san, I believe?—was watching over him with a worried look.

“Saint-sama! Please! I beg of you, please save him! Save Greg!”

Noticing me, Dion-san pleaded desperately.

Um, I’m going to heal him, so I’d actually like you to move out of the way…

“Now look here, you’re troubling Saint-sama. Move aside.”

“! M-my apologies!”

Well, I understand the feeling, but still.

I approached the examination table and peeled back the bandages.

I see. Normally, this would be a level of injury that’s impossible to survive. There was a large puncture wound in his abdomen, and it appeared the intestines had been damaged. This was the same type of wound Lu-chan suffered back when Suikyou attacked her, but this time it seemed to have been caused by something sharper, as the puncture itself was small.

“I can save him. Healing!”

Using Healing Magic, I treated the wound, his damaged intestines, and the blood vessels.

While I was at it, I treated his other cuts as well.

“Phew.”

I finished the healing in less than a minute.

“S-Saint-sama! Thank you! Thank you so much! He’s my childhood friend! We promised we’d protect this town together!”

As he said this, Dion-san tried to step forward to take my hand, but Chris-san stepped in between us to stop him.

“W-what are you doing?!”

“Fiene-sama has not given you permission to touch her.”

Dion-san looked shocked, but since the treatment wasn’t even finished yet, I just wanted him to stop interfering.

“Dion-san, was it? The treatment isn’t over yet, so could you please stay quiet?”

“Eh? Y-yes…”

Dion-san immediately wilted.

Watching him shrink down like a little animal was kind of adorable.

“Detoxify, disease treatment magic, and finally, cleansing magic.”

I cast my usual set of magic. I removed the toxins and pathogens that had likely escaped from the damaged intestines, and finished by making everything clean.

“Alright. It’s finished. Now then, Dion-san, please make sure he stays resting.”

“Y-yes!”

“Doctor Melveik, are there any other patients who need my treatment?”

“No, there are none.”

“Understood. We’ll be heading back to the garrison, so please call us if anything happens.”

“Will do.”

With that, we left the field hospital. In the distance, I could hear Dion-san shouting his thanks at the top of his lungs.

“Dinnerrrr~♪”

Lu-chan was in such a good mood she looked like she might start skipping.

It was no wonder; since lunch had been cold stew and bread, she was thrilled she’d finally get to eat a freshly made meal.

As we entered the dining hall, we saw Alois-san eating alone at a distant table.

No, it looked like he had just finished.

He returned his tray and was talking to someone further back.

Ooh? What’s this?

“Lady Marie’s cooking is truly delicious. If it’s Lady Marie’s cooking, I feel I could eat it every single day.”

“O-oh, please…”

Ho-ho? Marie-san is able to leave the sickroom and is even back at work?

And she’s even captured that handsome knight’s stomach?

Oho? I see, I see.

Satisfied that my treatment was yielding results, I enjoyed my dinner while glancing sideways at the heartwarming pair who might just become a couple.
