Volume 6, Chapter 57 – The Battle of Gaeribi

By the time monsters launched their attack on the Royal Capital, Charlotte and her companions had arrived at the Gaeribi Pass Fortress.

However, contrary to their prior expectations, the battle to defend the fortress was still ongoing.

“What is the status of the battle?”

“Sir! Commander! The battle is at a stalemate, but we are gradually reducing the number of monsters!”

A soldier answered Alan’s question.

“And what of the soldiers who cannot be killed?”

“Sir! Ten men worked together to restrain them and throw them into the bottom of a deep pit. So far, they have shown no sign of climbing out!”

“I see. And where is Hugues-dono?”

“He remains missing, sir.”

The sound of Charlotte catching her breath echoed upon hearing that response, and in the ensuing silence, the surrounding knights averted their eyes awkwardly.

“First, we shall confirm if those unkillable soldiers can be slain.”

“Th-there is a way?”

“The other Saint, Fiene-sama, knew how to defeat beings known as Undying Beasts. If these unkillable soldiers are the same as those Undying Beasts, it is said they can be annihilated if struck with a sword that has received Fiene-sama’s Blessing. Additionally, it is said they can be defeated by casting Purification Magic into their regenerating wounds.”

“I-I see. I shall make the preparations immediately!”

With Alan leading the way, they headed toward the fortress’s dungeon.

“So, this is an unkillable soldier.”

Having had his black helmet removed and his limbs bound, the Black Rainbow Empire soldier stared at Alan and the others with bloodshot eyes.

“Hey. Which unit do you belong to?”

“Ugh… ah… ohhh…”

However, the man only let out groans and did not answer Alan’s question.

“He doesn’t seem to have any reason left. Hey, do it.”

“Yes, sir!”

Following Alan’s order, a knight drove his blade through the man’s left chest. The man slumped over, spilling a massive amount of blood, appearing to have died instantly. Yet, within a few seconds, he raised his head and glared at the knight.

“I see. If they were to swarm us in great numbers, we wouldn’t stand a chance. How many prisoners are left?”

“Sir! There are eight captured in the cells, and approximately forty thrown into the pit.”

“Then there is no problem. Then test the Blessed Sword.”

“Yes, sir!”

This time, the knight used a sword imbued with Purification Magic by Fiene and once again stabbed the man through the left side of his chest.

“Gu… guh…”

The moment the man was pierced, the Purification Magic imbued in the sword activated. The man let out a small groan and vanished, turning into dust.

“Oh! As expected of Saint-sama’s Blessing!”

Cheers erupted from the knights, who had likely suffered greatly at the hands of these Black Rainbow Empire soldiers.

“Next. Charlotte-sama.”

“…Yes.”

Charlotte answered Alan’s call, her expression remaining grim.

Moving to the adjacent cell, she similarly drove her blade through a Black Rainbow Empire soldier’s heart.

“O God, purge the impurity that should not exist in this world. Purification.”

Charlotte’s Purification Magic was drawn into the soldier’s wound. In the next instant, the Empire soldier also vanished into dust.

“Oh! With this!”

“Splendid, Charlotte-sama.”

“…Yes.”

Char answered again with a stern expression, then whispered in a small voice.

“Hugues-sama… I’m coming to rescue you now.”

“Those Black Rainbow Empire soldiers are nothing to fear! We have two Saints on our side!”

The roars of the knights echoed through the Gaeribi Fortress.

Perhaps because they had been frustrated by a situation where they could not win despite being clearly superior in knightly strength, the morale of the knights defending the fortress was exceptionally high.

“Now, let us drive out these insolent fools who trample upon our homeland!”

The fortress gates swung open, and the knights who had been holding the fortress, together with the reinforcements from the Royal Capital, charged out.

It was November 19th, 9:00 AM. The two armies that had been staring each other down at the Gaeribi Fortress clashed once more.

“First, take out the Empire soldiers clinging to the front of the fortress!”

Wielding swords enchanted with Purification Magic by Fiene, the knights slashed into the black-armored Black Rainbow Empire soldiers.

Seeing this, the Empire soldiers rose with somewhat sluggish movements to intercept the knights.

“Hah!”

“Get out of our country!”

“How dare you do that to Crieri!”

The knights of the White Moon Kingdom, clearly superior in both morale and skill, struck down the Empire soldiers, turning them into dust.

“We can do this!”

“As expected of Saint-sama’s Blessing!”

In this manner, the Black Rainbow Empire soldiers who had been posturing in front of the fortress were routed in an instant.

Though the Black Rainbow Empire army retreated temporarily, relying on their numbers of monsters, they began to push back up the path to the fortress, indifferent to their own casualties.

“Do not let up the attack! Seize the top of the cliff first and rain arrows upon them! Drop rocks!”

Having taken the high ground and gained a tactical advantage, the White Moon Kingdom army fired arrows and hurled boulders down from the narrow mountain pass.

The attacks using falling rocks were particularly effective.

They caused immense damage not only to monsters like Goblins but also to those considered powerful, such as Ogres.

Boulders weighing several tons gained momentum as they fell, smashing into the monster hordes and sinking them into a sea of blood.

The intentionally thrown rocks swept up surrounding stones and trees, increasing their mass and becoming small-scale landslides that swallowed the Black Rainbow Empire’s monster units.

The landslides wiped out a considerable number of monster units, leaving the Black Rainbow Empire’s main force exposed.

“Now! Charge! Slay the commander!”

The White Moon Kingdom’s knights launched a downhill charge.”

In response, the Black Rainbow Empire army sent their Ogres to the front, bracing themselves to halt the charge.

At the moment of impact, a massive thud echoed throughout the area. The sheer strength of the giant Ogres stopped the momentum of the charging knights.

“Do not falter! Push forward! Show them the pride of the knights who protect their homeland!”

“Uoooooh!”

One by one, knights were punched away by the Ogres and rendered immobile, but other knights seized the opening to thrust spears into the Ogres’ joints.

“GAAAAAAH!”

And so, the Ogres too were taken down, one after another.

A path was opened before them.

“Slay them!”

“Get out of our country, you monsters!”

Having broken through the wall of Ogres, the knights—wielding swords enchanted with Purification Magic by Fiene—slashed into the Black Rainbow Empire soldiers, turning them into dust in rapid succession.

At this point, nothing could stop the momentum of the White Moon Kingdom army.

Thus, the battle between the White Moon Kingdom and the Black Rainbow Empire over the Gaeribi Pass Fortress came to a close with a complete victory for the White Moon Kingdom.

And it is said that on that battlefield, there was the figure of Charlotte, working desperately alone to heal the wounds of the knights.
