Volume 6, Chapter 58 – The Defense of the Royal Capital

After obtaining permission from the King to join the fray, we arrived atop the west gate of the Royal Capital.

Below us on the battlefield, a motley horde of monsters, including Goblins and Orcs, were surging forward.

Some of them were even wearing armor or carrying weapons despite being monsters, so they really did look like an army.

“They’re actually pushing them back, aren’t they?”

I heard that the lines had collapsed initially after being caught off guard by a group of monsters that suddenly appeared from the forest, but now the front line had been firmly re-established and was pushing the monster swarm back.

“Yes. Our kingdom’s knights are not that weak. As long as they can kill them, we should be fine.”

“We were surprised the first time we saw the Undying Beast, too.”

“But we were able to defeat it because Onee-sama enchanted all my arrows with Purification Magic!”

“It is a case of ‘a staff before one trips,’ as they say,” Shizuku-san remarked.

“Ahaha, I guess so.”

I wasn’t actually thinking of anything that profound; I just wanted to earn EXP.

“At this rate, it seems there is no need for us to step in, but… hm? What is that?”

Following Shizuku-san’s gaze, I saw soldiers clad in black armor advancing toward us, mixed in with the monsters.

“I wonder if those are the ‘undefeatable soldiers’ we heard about?”

“It may be so,” Shizuku-san replied.

Apparently, only Shizuku-san and I could see them; Chris-san and Lu-chan seemed confused, as if they couldn’t see a thing.

“Hmm, they aren’t shrouded in black haze as clearly as the Undying Beast was.”

“Indeed.”

While we were talking, the enemy soldiers clashed with the knights. As expected, the knights were more skilled, and they began cutting down the black soldiers one after another.

“Huh? Did they just defeat them normally?”

“No, not yet.”

Right before our eyes, a fallen enemy soldier sat up abruptly and charged back at the knights as if nothing had happened. The knights struck him down again, and once more, the enemy soldier sat up and charged.

Ah… this really is a nightmare.

No matter how strong the knights are, they’ll eventually be worn down.

“They really are just like the Undying Beast. This looks bad, so let’s go!”

“Yes!”

With that, we headed toward the black soldiers.

“Fall back! We’ll handle these guys!”

“Christina-dono!? Saint-sama as well!”

We stepped in, taking the place of the knights to face the enemy soldiers. Up close, I could clearly see they were shrouded in a very faint black haze.

“I shall go first!”

Shizuku-san closed the distance in an instant and cut down three enemy soldiers in a flash.

“Purification!”

I fired Purification Magic into the three fallen soldiers, enveloping them in a purifying light.

After a solid sensation of impact, the soldiers inside vanished into dust, leaving only their black armor behind.

“It really is the same as the Undying Beast.”

“It would seem so. However, I wonder if there is a connection between these and those of the Red Sky Empire?”

“I don’t know. But as long as we know they can be defeated using the same method as the Undying Beast, it’s not a problem.”

Chris-san unsheathed her Holy Sword.

“O God! Grant my blade the power of purification to cleanse the impurities of this otherworldly realm! Eternal Purification Blade Dedicated to the Silver Saint—Eternal Force Saint White!”

“Excuse me?”

As Chris-san chanted a nonsensical spell, the Holy Sword became imbued with Purification Magic.

“C-Chris-san? What was that?”

“Fiene-sama, thanks to studying the books you gave me, I have acquired the Holy Knight skills Holy Magic and Magic Sword. Now I can be of use to you, Fiene-sama!”

N-no, I mean, uh, yeah. That’s not what I meant!

“Th-that… E-Eternal…?”

“It is Eternal Purification Blade Dedicated to the Silver Saint—Eternal Force Saint White. For the final activation name of Magic Sword, the user can choose the name they believe is best.”

Chris-san looked at me with sparkling eyes, full of confidence and clearly wanting to be praised.

I can’t say it. Looking into those sparkling eyes, I couldn’t possibly tell her the name sounded lame, or that she’d come down with a serious case of Chuunibyou.

Steeling myself, I forced a smile and managed to praise her.

“U-um, yes. I think… it’s very ‘you,’ Chris-san. It’s nice.”

I wonder if my face was twitching? Was I okay?

“Yes!”

Chris-san nodded with a satisfied expression and joyfully began slashing through the enemy soldiers.

It looked like the Purification Magic was working properly; the soldiers Chris-san cut down while activating “Eternal-whatever” stayed down, and their wounds did not regenerate.

Then, after Chris-san landed a few more hits on the fallen opponents, the enemy soldiers vanished into dust.

“Fiene-sama!”

Chris-san looked at me with an incredibly happy expression.

Ah, um, right. Yes, this is when you’re supposed to praise them.

“Chris-san, as expected. You really are reliable.”

I put on my best business smile and praised her.

“Yes! Thank you very much!”

If Chris-san had a tail like Shizuku-san, I’m sure it’d be wagging so hard right now.

Still, it’s incredibly helpful that she can do this.

Since there aren’t many enemy soldiers right now, it’s fine, but if a large number of them attacked, coordinating the timing of the Purification Magic would be a struggle.

If the enemies Chris-san defeats stop regenerating, it’ll give us a lot more breathing room.

Also, the reason she can’t defeat them in one hit is probably because her Skill Level is still low.

From the looks of it, if her Skill Level goes up one more, she’ll probably be able to take them down in a single blow.

“Oh! As expected of Saint-sama! Christina-dono is impressive as well!”

“Don’t be outdone by Saint-sama! Follow our lead!”

“Uoooooh!”

The morale of the knights recovered instantly, and they began cutting down the monsters one after another.

Then, knights carrying swords and spears that I had enchanted appeared from behind, overwhelming the enemy soldiers.

And so, despite the surprise attack on the Royal Capital, the White Moon Kingdom managed to repel the invasion without a single casualty.
