Volume 7, Chapter 27 – The Mysterious Necromancer
When we arrived at the West Gate, the Undead had already begun to swarm the area.
From atop the city wall, I watched the soldiers fighting desperately in the darkness.
It seemed the enemies were the Undead of the monsters we had defeated during the day. As I suspected, someone must have turned those monsters into Undead.
The clerics were performing Purification on the Undead while the soldiers acted as shields to protect them, but they were hopelessly outnumbered.
“For now, I’ll purify this entire area. Purification!”
I casually purified all the Undead within my line of sight in one go.
Let’s see… I think there were around 2,000 monsters in the swarm during the day?
I’m pretty sure there were more of them, and the area was much larger back at Airoll, so this much was nothing.
As I effortlessly purified the monster Undead, the soldiers burst into cheers.
But it was too early to celebrate. This time, Zombies, Skeletons, and figures that looked like Wraiths appeared from beyond the desert.
“Hmm. Zombies, Skeletons, and Wraiths are coming from over there.”
“Which means the caster is over there! Let us go!”
“Fiene-sama!”
“Yes. Chris-san, I leave it to you.”

“M-me too!”
And so, as if repeating the events of the daytime, we leaped from the city gate and raced westward.

“Purification!”
After repeatedly purifying wave after wave of Undead, we spotted a human figure beyond the desert.
The figure wore a robe that completely enveloped their body, and with the hood pulled low over their face, it was impossible to read their expression.
But judging by the way they carried themselves, they seemed flustered.
“Is that the one?”
“It appears so.”
“Then, Purification!”
I purified all the Undead surrounding the figure in one go.
By the time my light of Purification faded, we had reached the man.
“That is far enough!”
“Kuh. You lot…!”

The voice sounded like that of a man.
“You evil Necromancer attacking the town of Dalha! Your wicked arts are powerless before Saint Fiene Argentata-sama! Surrender gracefully!”
As Chris-san declared this, she stepped forward as if to shield me. Lu-chan had her bow ready, and Shizuku-san was also in a combat stance.
“Saint… Fiene Argentata, you say?”
The man let out a surprised cry, and then began to laugh defiantly.
“Heh… hehehehe. Hahahahaha! To think you would interfere with my plans twice. Hahaha!”
“Twice? Does that mean the attack on Airoll was also your doing!?”
“Exactly. And for that matter, I was the one who set the monsters upon you.”
“W-why would you do such a thing!? You evil Necromancer! Do you want corpses that badly!?”
“I see. You are the Holy Knight Christina. Hmph. Do you really think I would move for something as trivial as that?”
“What!?”
“Humanity is the source of everything. That is why I am thinning them out like this.”
“What!”

Chris-san looked as if she were about to slash him at any moment in her rage.
“The root of all evil? What does that mean?”
When I asked, the man seemed to smirk.
“As I thought, the Saint knows nothing. So even the Saint is nothing more than a pawn after all.”
“…What do you mean by that?”
“The fact that you don’t understand is proof enough.”
Umm…? I have absolutely no idea what he’s talking about.
“I do not know what circumstances you claim exist, but Necromancy is a taboo. God will not forgive you for violating it. Furthermore, Fiene-sama will never forgive you for harming the innocent people of Airoll and Dalha. I know not who you are, but I shall strike you down here.”
Saying this, Chris-san leveled her sword.
“How courageous. I could kill you here, but it would be problematic if the Saint were to disappear right now. I shall take my leave for today.”
In the next instant, a violent wind suddenly blew.
Sand whipped through the air, and in an instant our vision was swallowed by yellow.
“Until we meet again, Saint.”
Through the raging sandstorm, I could hear the man’s voice fading into the distance.

When the storm subsided, the man was gone.
“Fiene-sama!”
“Yes. I’m okay.”
I answered Chris-san and checked my surroundings.
Thank goodness. Shizuku-san and Lu-chan were both safe.
“That guy… he said I was just a pawn.”
“Fiene-sama. All people are equally servants of God. However, I have never heard of anyone being a ‘pawn’.”
“I do not understand the meaning, but at the very least, he did not look like a human.”
“But he said he didn’t want Onee-sama to die.”
“…Someone who isn’t even human, yet wields Necromancy, needs Fiene-sama, the Saint? What in the world does that mean?”
“Hmm?”
Faced with such a completely nonsensical situation, we couldn’t help but look at one another in confusion.
