Volume 7, Chapter 42 – The Saint’s Miracle

Shizuku-san returned to the Barrier after causing a ruckus and destroying the soldiers’ bows and arrows.

“Kuh, you monster…”

“You should be grateful to Saint-sama who told me not to kill anyone.”

The soldiers glared at Shizuku-san with eyes full of resentment, but Shizuku-san seemed completely unfazed, as though none of it concerned her.

“Oh? It seems Chris-dono is signaling something.”

“Ah, you’re right. She’s waving her arm, telling us to come over.”

It seemed the preparations were complete.

“Everyone from Luma. It looks like the rescue ship is ready. Please cross this invisible bridge slowly.”

I told them so, but as expected, crossing something invisible was frightening.

The Luma people looked at one another.

“Look, like this. It can support you all properly.”

I climbed atop the Defense Wall to show them that it could support a person, then cast Purification Magic along the top of the wall to show that the path continued all the way to the ship, but their reaction remained hesitant.

They must have seen Chris-san run across it earlier, but perhaps even if they understood it intellectually, they simply couldn’t shake the fear.

While everyone hesitated, the first one to speak up was Idris-kun.

“Saint-sama, I’ll go first!”

Despite being so small, his words carried great weight, as he had walked this long, arduous journey without a single complaint.

“T-then, I will too.”

“I-I’m going too. I believe in Saint-sama!”

Encouraged by Idris-kun’s voice, the people who had been hesitating began stepping forward one after another.

Then, with Idris-kun and his mother leading the way, they walked across the bridge suspended in the sky, slowly, one sure step at a time.

“Ohhh. A miracle! Saint-sama has performed a miracle!”

The surrounding Luma people wept in astonishment and began walking across the top of the Defense Wall one after another.

“K-curse you! Someone stop that!”

“It’s impossible! All the bows and arrows were destroyed by that woman earlier!”

Good, just as planned. Now all I have to do is maintain the Barrier and the Defense Wall.

“G-grrr! In that case, destroy this Barrier and kill the caster!”

“That’s useless. I may not look it, but I am the greatest user of Holy Magic in history. Please just stay quiet.”

“Ugh…”

Just as Kamil-san bit his lip, a scream erupted from the soldiers who had come from Eibra.

“It’s a Yellow Scorpi!”

“What! At a time like this!”

“Waaaaah!”

“God is greaaaaaat—!”

Ah, it looked like a monster had decided to attack at the worst possible moment.

And that scream surely meant that the usual suicide charge had occurred.

“Sigh. It can’t be helped. Detoxify. Healing.”

I released Antidote Magic and weak Healing Magic at the locations I judged based on the sound.

Well… I was angry, and part of me even thought I didn’t need to save them.

But… even so, it seemed I just couldn’t stand watching people die right in front of me.

“Eh?”

“What on earth…?”

The soldiers looked around in bewilderment, their expressions blank.

“I cannot forgive you all. However, even so, when I think that you all have families, and that there are people who would be sad if you died, I cannot stand by and watch you be killed by monsters. Therefore, I’ll cure the poison. So, please do your best to defeat the Yellow Scorpi.”

When I said this after moving to the edge of the Barrier, the soldiers’ eyes widened in surprise.

Ah, yeah. I get it. I think I’m an idiot too.

I’m just a fake Saint. I’m not really one. So why am I doing such Saint-sama-like things? I find it strange myself.

But, you know. In Airoll, in the Royal Capital, in the South, everyone is alive and everyone has a family. There are people who would be sad if they were gone.

Maybe this is nothing more than self-satisfaction.

However, if my precious people were to disappear, I would be sad, and I think if I disappeared, there would be people who would be saddened.

That’s why, if helping people like this can spare even one more person from that kind of grief, then I want to help.

That’s what I think.

“Good grief. Fiene-dono truly is a Saint.”

“Well, I’m just a fake Saint doing this because of the circumstances.”

“Hahaha. Humble as always.”

While I continued casting Antidote and Healing Magic from inside the Barrier, the attacking Yellow Scorpi were eventually defeated.

And in the next moment, about half of the soldiers went Bitan.

“We are deeply sorry! God is great! God is great! The Saint is the Apostle of God! Gratitude for the Saint’s salvation!”

The rest were varied—some were confused, some were pressing Kamil-san for answers, some were trying to protect Kamil-san, and some were trying to get the prostrated soldiers to stand up.

“I cannot forgive you all. But if you truly feel that way, please do not stop us. And please let the Luma people you took as hostages in the town of Izar escape as well.”

I don’t know if my words reached them or not, but they continued to chant their prayers.
