Chapter 600: She Didn't Believe Him
Now he finally understood why Ji Yuntang had deliberately kept her conversation with Chen Hu out of his earshot.
So that was the game she was playing.
But he had to admit, Ji Yuntang's approach was clever and it worked.
When the commoners outside heard that Prince Ye was gravely ill, vomiting blood, and in need of treatment, they stopped feeling sorry for Ji Nanchuan.
After all, anyone with half a brain knew your own husband mattered more than a brother who never treated you right.
Given the choice between Ji Qingfeng and Luo Junhe, Ji Yuntang would obviously save Luo Junhe first, right?
Ji Nanchuan was so furious he felt like his lungs were about to explode. He'd knelt at the gates of Prince Ye's Mansion for so long, finally managing to draw the crowd's attention and sway public opinion.
Just moments ago, the passersby had been calling Ji Yuntang unfilial and morally bankrupt.
But now, hearing that Ji Yuntang was treating Luo Junhe, everyone around was singing her praises.
So what had all his effort been for?
Ji Nanchuan's chest heaved with fury. He was convinced that the people at Prince Ye's Mansion claiming Prince Ye was gravely ill was just an excuse they'd cooked up.
Ji Yuntang just didn't want to treat Ji Qingfeng, plain and simple.
Kneeling there, Ji Nanchuan suddenly felt it was all pointless. He felt like a clown on the street.
He brushed off his sleeves, stood up, and stormed off in humiliation.
Inside the carriage, Xia Chuhe frowned. While Ji Nanchuan was kneeling at the gates of Prince Ye's Mansion, she'd been listening closely to what the commoners were saying.
Most people thought Ji Yuntang was in the right, and quite a few said the Marquis Yongning's estate had it coming.
Xia Chuhe mulled it over—could Ji Nanchuan have been lying to her just now? Had he tricked her?
Just as that thought crossed her mind, Ji Nanchuan climbed back into the carriage.
His face was bright red, fury blazing in his eyes. "That ungrateful wretch, that ungrateful wretch! I knelt at her doorstep, and she still won't even show her face."
"I get it now—she just doesn't want to save Qingfeng and made up some excuse to string me along!"
Xia Chuhe watched Ji Nanchuan fuming and thought to herself that he really wasn't the man he used to be.
The old Ji Nanchuan had been polite, gentle, and agreeable in both word and deed.
But now, he flew off the handle at the slightest thing, completely losing that easygoing manner he used to have.
Xia Chuhe asked Ji Nanchuan, "Your daughter won't save your son—but did your son ever treat your daughter well?"
That question left Ji Nanchuan stumped.
Ji Qingfeng wished nothing more than for Ji Yuntang to drop dead—so how could he have ever been good to her?
A flicker of something crossed his face before he quickly composed himself.
Ji Nanchuan said with absolute certainty, "Qingfeng was naturally good to Ji Yuntang. All three of my sons are known throughout the capital for doting on their sisters. Whenever Ji Qingqing or Ji Yuntang needed anything, all they had to do was say the word, and my sons would move heaven and earth to make it happen."
"Especially Qingfeng—he was out doing business, so he had more free time than Huai Che and Zi Hang. He was especially good to his two sisters. Anything Qingqing had, Ji Yuntang had too."
"And after all that, when Qingfeng got into trouble, Ji Yuntang still won't save him. Tell me, isn't that just plain ungrateful?"
Xia Chuhe sat in the carriage, her fingertips tracing the rim of her teacup. She stayed silent.
Her gut told her Ji Nanchuan wasn't being straight with her.
Even though Ji Yuntang hadn't shown her face and Xia Chuhe didn't know what kind of person she really was, based on what the commoners said about her, Xia Chuhe felt she didn't seem like the type to forget a kindness.
Besides, what kind of father badmouths his own biological daughter in front of other people?
All things considered, Xia Chuhe felt Ji Nanchuan had his own problems.
She looked at Ji Nanchuan and said gently, "Brother Nanchuan, please calm down. Since Princess Ye won't treat Second Young Master, maybe you could think of other options."
"There are plenty of physicians in the capital—surely someone can treat Second Young Master's illness. Why not have my servant drive the carriage and take you to see a doctor?"
Ji Nanchuan: "..."
Her reaction caught him off guard, and it wasn't what he wanted to hear.
Shouldn't Xia Chuhe be joining him in trashing Ji Yuntang?
Ji Nanchuan forced a smile and said awkwardly, "The physicians in the capital are all mediocre—how could any of them possibly cure Qingfeng's illness?"
His real plan was to use Ji Qingfeng's illness to set a trap for Ji Yuntang.
Once she agreed to treat Ji Qingfeng, any future problem with his health would be pinned on her.
But to his surprise, the trap was set, and she refused to walk right into it.
Xia Chuhe, however, was taken aback by Ji Nanchuan's words.
She said, "How is that possible? If I'm not mistaken, Princess Ye is only sixteen or seventeen."
"She's that young and can already cure Second Young Master—surely doctors who've practiced for decades have better skills than a young girl like Princess Ye?"
That question seemed to hit a nerve with Ji Nanchuan, and a proud look spread across his face.
"Chuhe, you may not know this, but I'm not bragging—that girl's medical skills are unmatched, not just in the Dongchen Kingdom, but across all four nations."
"She came up with her own medical technique, something called surgery or whatever. She cuts open the patient's body with a knife and sews it back up with thread, curing terminal illnesses that way."
"And her fees aren't steep—on average, no more than a hundred taels of silver, which most families can afford. For poor families, she only charges five taels per surgery, and she even throws in free medicine and regular check-ups. She's cured plenty of incurable diseases."
Hearing this, Xia Chuhe looked even more stunned. "Brother Nanchuan, is Princess Ye's medical skill truly that miraculous?"
Ji Nanchuan gazed at her with deep affection. "Of course. You know I'd never lie to you."
Ji Yuntang was his daughter, and her brilliance made Ji Nanchuan proud—especially in front of the woman he loved. He felt it made him look good.
As if Ji Yuntang had inherited her medical skills from him.
Xia Chuhe met Ji Nanchuan's eyes for a moment before looking away.
But deep down, she'd grown intensely curious about Ji Yuntang.
With such an amazing daughter, why was she so cold toward the Marquis Yongning's estate?
Was she really as ungrateful as Ji Nanchuan made her out to be?
In the end, Xia Chuhe still took Ji Nanchuan to find other doctors.
A dozen or so old doctors gathered, scrambling through the night with all kinds of precious herbs, barely managing to keep Ji Qingfeng alive.
