Demon King – Chapter 19 – The Demon Lord Has Returned to Huanghai City!

“Eiru, wake up. We’re at the service area. Do you want to eat something?” It was nearing noon when the two, who had set out early in the day, stopped at a highway service station.

“Like a little kid… sleeping so soundly.” Qi Fang chuckled as he glanced at the girl curled up in the passenger seat.

Woken by his voice, Eiru rubbed her sleepy eyes. There wasn’t much to do—she tended to get carsick, so she’d developed the habit of falling asleep as soon as she got in a car. Now it was practically a conditioned response.

“Want anything to eat?” While he was asking her, Qi Fang covered her with a blanket to keep her from catching a cold—the A/C was running a bit high.

Since he didn’t know that she could retract her tail and wings, he figured Eiru wouldn’t want to get out of the car and planned to just take her order and come back.

“McDonald’s~” the little demon lord said, swaying her head cutely.

“Alright, alright. But you shouldn’t eat too much junk food, you know?” Qi Fang tapped her forehead and was about to get out of the car when he noticed Eiru unbuckling her seatbelt.

“Huh? You’re coming with me?”

“Yeah? We’re eating, right?” Eiru blinked, a little confused. Wasn’t getting out to eat the obvious thing to do?

“Your wings and tail… aren’t you afraid someone might see them?” Qi Fang gestured toward her distinctly non-human appendages.

“Oh, I can tuck them away,” Eiru said nonchalantly. She stretched before slowly retracting her wings and tail into her body.

“Well, that’s good. Also… the horns.” Qi Fang mimicked holding something above his head, reminding her not to forget her horns.

“Oh, right…” Waving her hands over her head, she used her magic to conceal her horns. Then she followed Qi Fang out of the car and walked with him toward the service station’s McDonald’s.

After finding a place to sit, Qi Fang went to the counter to order. Meanwhile, Eiru sat waiting obediently at the table. The chairs were a bit high for her; her feet couldn’t even touch the ground.

“Hmph hmph hmph~” the Demon Lord hummed a little tune as her slender legs, wrapped in knee-high socks, dangled and swayed happily.

Quite a few customers around them noticed the adorable little girl, and many cast glances her way.

“They’re all looking at you, silly girl,” Qi Fang said softly as he returned with two trays.

“?!!” Realizing that people were indeed smiling in her direction, Eiru’s face flushed bright red and she immediately buried her face in the table. Steam was practically rising from her head.

“So embarrassing…” she mumbled into her arms.

“Alright, alright, eat up… We’ve still got a long drive ahead.” Qi Fang ruffled her head gently and smiled.

To be honest, this girl was just too cute—endearingly dumb in a way. No one could really dislike her. She made people instinctively want to look after her.

“Hmmph…” Eiru puffed her cheeks slightly and started nibbling on a french fry.

After finishing their meal and resting a bit, they got back in the car and resumed their journey.

Eiru sat in the passenger seat, sipping a soda while watching the scenery pass by.

Honestly, there wasn’t much to see on the side of the highway. Once she finished her drink, sleepiness began to creep in again.

“If you’re going to nap, make sure to cover yourself with the blanket,” Qi Fang reminded her, noticing how groggy she was getting.

“I’m okay… I can hang on a little longer…” she said, trying to keep herself awake. She figured that she could distract the driver if she fell asleep next to him, so she tried to hold out as long as she could.

“Still a while to go. Just sleep, it’s fine.”

“Mm…” Feeling chilly, Eiru wrapped the blanket around herself. Seeing this, Qi Fang turned the A/C down a notch.

No matter how hard the Demon Lord tried to fight it, biology always won. In no time at all, she curled into a ball, resting her head against the seat, and fell into dreamland…

When she woke again, it was already dark. Eiru noticed they were no longer on the highway. Familiar scenery passed by through the window—she was back in Huanghai City.

Eiru leaned on the window, gazing out. Qi Fang noticed she was awake and said,

“You’re up? I’ll drop you off at Uncle Li’s place first. Your home’s nearby, right? We’ll eat first, then Uncle Li will take you the rest of the way.”

“Mmhm.” Now that she was back in Huanghai, Eiru couldn’t help but feel excited. Her rapidly wagging tail gave it away.

“Brother Li, we’re in the East District of Huanghai now. Yeah… we got lucky, no traffic the whole way.” Qi Fang made a call as they neared their destination.

“We had lunch, but not dinner. It’s already past 1 a.m., and while I’m okay, the girl might be starving.”

“I’m fine, not that hungry…” Now that he brought it up, Eiru did feel a little peckish, but nothing too serious after such a long nap.

After a few more turns, she spotted a familiar figure standing at the entrance of a neighborhood up ahead.

“Uncle Li…” When the car stopped, Qi Fang led Eiru out and over to Officer Li. She hesitantly tried to greet him.

Nope. He was still terrifying. Officer Li’s stern face made the little Demon Lord nervous again. She instinctively backed up and hid behind Qi Fang.

“Thanks… I already booked the hotel, so you can go rest now,” Officer Li said. Relieved to see the little demon safe and sound, he turned to Eiru and crouched in front of her.

“Am I really that scary?” He gave a rare smile and gently ruffled her hair.

Even though his hand was rough, Eiru unexpectedly found the sensation comforting. Her eyes fluttered a bit, leaning into it like a small animal being pet.

“Anyway, I’m glad you’re alright.” Standing up, he addressed both of them. “Let’s eat first, and after that… Eiru.”

“Y-yes?!” The sudden call made her jump, and she immediately stood at attention.

“After dinner, I need to talk to you about something.”
