CHAPTER 157 PART 2
「But for them, that is precisely what is considered to be normal, wouldn’t you agree? Because Demons don’t recognize any creature other than themselves as worthy of being alive in the first place.」
「Yes, but you are not like that at all, Iris. You seem to have chosen to fight people for some reason. For some strong reason that told you that fighting and slaughtering those humans was the only option left for you on the table.」
「……………」
「Am I wrong in thinking that?」
「No, Rein-sama. You are absolutely correct.」
Iris admitted that, surprisingly easily at that.
「You are absolutely right, Rein-sama. I am no Demon or Devil. I don’t kill people for no reason, like some sort of wild beast.」
「Then, why……」
「But still, if it makes perfect sense for me to do so…… I am going to kill anyone without a moment of hesitation. Of tha, I assure you.
Iris then laughed.
That smile and laugh of hers just now was truly filled with both hatred and madness.
「…… Why?」
「Excuse me?」
「Why are you like this, Iris? What’s driving you this far?」
「Supposing that you are going to learn what drives me, are you going to do something about it?」
「I…… I don’t know. I really don’t know. But…… I still want to know!」
Saying that, I looked directly at Iris.
「Maybe it’s naive…… And maybe that’s just my own wishful thinking here, but…… Maybe if we could figure out what’s the reason behind your actions, maybe we can help you to make peace with it.」
「Unfortunately, that will never happen.」
Iris answered almost immediately.
My words had been denied here, but this also assured me.
I could feel Iris’ strong will behind those words.
It was a strong conviction. A burning desire to never forgive anyone.
Just from those words alone, it felt as though I could almost hear her say that.
「But then again…… I am sure that you would never be satisfied with that kind of answer alone, wouldn’t you, Rein-sama?」
「Well, yes, you might be right about that one. Because if possible, I would like to hear it from you, Iris. The truth, that is. The whole truth.」
Right after that, there was a brief moment of hesitation.
But after another moment had passed, Iris let out a short and shallow sigh out of her mouth, as if she had made up her mind just now.
「Fuuh…… Who would have thought that you could be this pushy, Rein-sama? But then again, when you put things like that, there is no way for me to possible deny you your request. It wouldn’t be fair.」
「Does that mean……?」
「But please, don’t get me wrong here, Rein-sama. I’m not talking to you to make you understand me or to make it possible for you to help me reconcile with my past. I’m trying to get you to know what I have in my mind just so that you could understand just how hopeless of an endeavor you are trying to set out to do, and make you give up on it. It is to let you know that there will never be any kind of reconciliation for me, now and ever. That’s why I’m going to tell you this story.」
「Yes, that may be so, but I still want to hear that from you. Is that alright with you?」
「Fufufu…… Normally I would get pretty tired of someone speaking to me like that, but when it comes to you, Rein-sama, I don’t really mind you being a little bit pushy.」
Iris chuckled for a while, and then she pulled herself away from me.
We then moved on towards the outskirts of the village.
I followed slowly after her.
「Rein-sama, do you happen to have any family?」
With her back to me, Iris asked me in a quiet voice.
「No. My entire family had been murdered alongside the entire village in the Demon attack when I was still a child long ago.」
「Oh my, I beg your pardon. I didn’t mean it to force you to remember something so unpleasant.」
「Oh, no, don’t worry about it, I don’t mind. It’s been a long time ago, so I have already managed to make my peace with it.」
「Well, that’s very kind of you to say.」
I felt like Iris smiled at me just now.
But since she had her back facing towards me, I could only speculate about that.
「’I think I have figured out one of the reasons as to why I feel such a close connection with you, Rein-sama.」
「That would be……」
「…… Yes, I too had lost my entire family, you see.」
I could hear the slightest hint of sadness in Iris’s voice just now.
It was a very human emotion, and even at a time like this, I felt close to Iris for some reason.
After all, Iris was also sad when she lost her family.
In that regard she was no different from any ordinary person.
「…… Is this something that has to do with the Celestial Tribe?」
I was a little hesitant at first, but I decided to pursue that matter.
The Ultimate Species that is said to be long since extinct.
But why did they become extinct in the first place?
Why did they disappear just like that?
Not to mention that the reason for their disappearance was never made clear.
…… I wonder.
What if the reason for the extinction of the Celestial Tribe had something to do with humans……?
If that was the case, then Iris’s hatred towards humans would be perfectly understandable.
「Before we talk about me in detail, should I first talk about the Celestial Tribe in general?」
Iris looked back at me.
Her face was unnaturally calm, to the point it was actually kind of frightening.
「How much do you happen to know about us, the Celestial Tribe, Rein-sama?」
「Well, to tell you the truth, I know very little about your tribe. Next to nothing, actually. It has been a long time since it was said to have been completely eradicated from the face of the earth, and the reason for its demise is not known to the general public, either. So yeah, we don’t really know anything about you Celestial Tribes, I’m afraid.」
「Hmm, I see. So that’s what’s going on, huh……」
Iris bit her nails lightly.
「So, since it was inconvenient for them, they decided to erase the whole truth instead of just censoring it…… Yes, I see. That kind of solution sounds exactly like something a human being would think of.」
「What do you mean by that?」
「And what do you think it could possibly mean, Rein-sama?」
Instead of answering my question head on, Iris responded with a question of her own.
What is it that Iris knows?
What is it that she was able to witness with her own eyes?
Placing my hand on my chin, I started pondering that matter and thought of a possible solution to all of those questions.
It took me a moment, but I eventually arrived at the answer that I thought could be the right one.
「Could it be that…… Humans are somehow involved in the eradication of the Celestial Tribe?」
「Yes, that’s correct.」.
