CHAPTER 158: IRIS’S PAST *2* PART 1
Humans were somehow involved in the extinction of the Celestial Tribe.
What does that even mean?
I tried to think about it in a calm manner, but since I had no other information to possibly work with, there was no way for me to possibly come up with an answer.
And since I was at a loss for words here, there was no way that I would be even able to ask Iris herself for an explanation.
I mean, that’s understandable. It’s been a while since that incident took place, but I still had trouble with openly talking about the annihilation of my hometown.
So I know that Iris might be feeling the same way to a certain extent.
But still.
But we have to move forward for the time being.
We need to move forward if I am ever going to find out what exactly happened to Iris in her past.
Deciding on that, I decided to continue the conversation.
「What…… What does that even mean? I know this may be hard for you to recall, but can you tell me more about it? In the greatest detail possible?」
「Yes, yes, it’s fine. I don’t mind telling you more about it, Rein-sama. Rather, since it is you, I think I wouldn’t even mind telling you everything. But, as I said before, please don’t misunderstand: I’m not telling you this for some lofty purpose of us understanding one another, but for something completely opposite. Once I am finished with telling you my tale, you will come to know that it is impossible for our two species to reach understanding.」
「Yes, I remember. And that is something that I am completely fine with.」
「Fufufu, well then, how about I resume my tale?」
Looking somewhat happy right now, Iris spun around on the spot.
「Now, now, where was I? I got sidetracked and forgot about where I was and from where I should resume.」
「You were about to tell me the gist about the Celestial Tribe.」
「Oh, yes. Yes, of course. A talk about us Celestial Tribe in general, right. From what you have told me, I understand that you know very little about the Celestial Tribe. Well then, I should start by explaining about the Celestial Tribe. But there’s no need to get all scared here. I promise you that although it’s going to be a lecture, it won’t really be a long one. I am going to give you as much of a general rundown as possible, for simplicity’s sake.」
Iris then sat on the ground.
She let her body relax, not caring if the dirt stained the skirt part of her dress.
Following her lead, I sat down right next to her.
Iris flashed me a smile, as if she was happy I did that of my own volition.
For a moment out there, there was nothing but silence between the two of us.
I felt as if I was all alone with Iris in a vast, huge world. It was a strange thing to even imagine, like a sort of illusion clouding your mind.
「The Celestial Tribe is, for the lack of the more appropriate term, a race blessed by the Gods themselves.」
Eventually, Iris softly opened her mouth to speak.
「In the sense that we have been blessed by the Gods, it could be argued that we were somewhat similar to those of the God Tribe. However, there was a definite difference between the God Tribe and the Celestial Tribe.」
「And that difference would be……?」
「We, the members of the Celestial Tribe, were chosen to act as the Gods’ envoys here on earth. In place of the Gods who cannot descend to the earth, we execute their will as needed, either be it with word or with action. That is the role that we, the Celestial Tribe, have been given. That is the biggest difference between us and the God Tribe.」
「So…… Does that mean that the information about the Celestial Tribe members being the messengers of the Gods was actually correct?」
「Yes, that’s right. It is precisely as the rumors are saying. So I guess that even though the vast majority of the information had been censored or erased, there are bits and pieces here and there that managed to be preserved for posterity. left in places. As expected, you cannot possibly hope to erase every single piece of lore about something, no matter how hard you might try and wish for that to happen.」
When I heard those exact words……
That would mean that some of the legends about the Celestial Tribe that I have heard would be true, while others would be nothing but lies and deceit.
But then…… which one is the truth, and which one is a lie? And how can we possibly hope to tell them apart?
「Also, you are talking about it in such a casual manner, but…… This is actually the first time ever that I have heard that the Gods can’t actually come down to earth.」
「Oh my, is that? Please excuse me for glazing over that subject, but I just assumed that this kind of knowledge should be pretty common, even amongst humans.」
「Maybe it is, but sadly, I could never go to Church or Sunday School, so I know pretty much nothing about God and his teachings……」
If my hometown hadn’t been attacked by that Demon and gotten razed to the ground, then who knows? Maybe I could have started going to Sunday School and obtained all of that common sense knowledge……
But now that this opportunity was long lost to me, there was no use to lament over that fact.
And besides……
I stopped believing in Gods when my hometown was attacked and destroyed in the first place.
Not that I don’t believe in them per se, but……
There was a time when I just stopped praying to the Gods in general. It was at the time when I realized that in the moment of your greatest need, the only one who can help you is yourself, not some Gods who you can’t even see……
But I digress.
I continued to quietly listen to what Iris had to say.
「Our mission as the members of the Celestial Tribe was to carry out the will of Heavens and the Gods here on earth in their stead. As to what the Will of the Heavens comprise of…… Well, generally it can be watered down to two most basic points: protecting the humans and eradicating their natural enemies, the Demons.」
For the member of the Celestial Tribe, someone who was supposed to protect humans from the Demons, to be now regarded as one and be called the Devil……
Talk about irony.
「At that time, well…… I think we had managed to actually build a good relationship with the humans back then, even though it gives me chills now and I find it absolutely revolting. The humans knew that we were the spires of the Gods and they respected us and revered us greatly.」
「Hm? Now wait just a minute.」
