Volume 6, Chapter 20 – The Secrets Kept by the Gods
After about half a minute, Davis suddenly returned to his previous tone, full of the vicissitudes of life. His gaze lingered on the bracelet held up by the tip of his sword, the red glow in his eyes gradually fading.
“Using your elven reckoning, that was less than a thousand years after the birth of the Holy Tree. The Flame Owl Kingdom was the only human empire at that time. We worshipped three gods: the Goddess of Life, the Corona God, and the God of Fire. I was a prince born in the Flame Owl Kingdom at that time, but I was not a native of this continent. I came from another world and was the Holy Son chosen by the Corona God.”
“Another world? Have you heard of the Human Alliance and Earth?”
“No. The world here is not much different from the world I lived in, except that the magic in my world was more powerful.”
It seems he’s the same type as Claire.
The universe of this world is quite rich and colorful.
“Being chosen by a god was naturally good. Not only was I born into a royal family, but I was also protected by the Corona God’s oracle from birth. I gained status, reputation, and powerful strength. When I grew up, I naturally began to work for the Corona God, hoping that when I died of old age, the Corona God would send me home. Although life here was prosperous, I had family and friends in my own world. I was forcibly summoned here, not voluntarily. When the Corona God summoned me, he promised me that after I died, he would send my soul back to my world.”
“Mm.”
Fia nodded lightly, signaling Davis to continue.

The story had clearly reached a critical point. Davis’s hand began to exert force, causing the ornate longsword to creak and groan under the strain. A wild wind began to blow around them, mirroring Davis’s emotional fluctuations.
“However, just as I was working hard to return, I discovered that the so-called Holy Son was a lie. You should know about the Fallen Ones, right? Those who suffer from a disease causing strange patterns on their bodies because of deals with the Darkborn.”
“Those people didn’t make deals with the Darkborn. What about them?”
“As expected of a god-slayer, you’ve already figured out that it’s not about consorting with the Darkborn. As a Holy Son, I had been hunting down Darkborn, including those suffering from Darkborn sickness. But as time went on, I found that these people with Darkborn sickness often only appeared around me. At first, they were servants, then friends, relatives, and even my father, the King of the Flame Owl Kingdom. The King of the Flame Owl Kingdom making a deal with the Darkborn, and then me, the Holy Son, having to kill him—what a joke! My father was the most devout believer of the Three Gods; how could he consort with the Darkborn!”
“So I began to investigate this matter until I accidentally met Absolute Evil. Absolute Evil told me, who was lost, the secret of this world. The so-called Holy Sons are merely an expedient measure of the gods. They cannot control outsiders coming to this world at all. The gods constructed the rules of this world so that magic from this world cannot penetrate their Divinity to harm them, but magic and people from outside this world can. To avoid outsiders raising their swords against them, they give us, people outside the rules, benefits, crown us with the name of Holy Son, and use our power to deal with the Darkborn.”
It sounded reasonable, but there was a glaring loophole.
Fia frowned and asked carefully.
“Since the gods fear your power, wouldn’t it be easier to just kill you directly?”

“No, they value our power. This world often welcomes outsiders, and many of them can directly threaten the gods from the moment they arrive. Although harboring us is dangerous, the gods can learn methods to deal with us from it. Moreover, once the gods use magic to intervene directly in reality, they will expose their location. At that time, Absolute Evil will come knocking. They are weak and dare not take the risk.”
“So, making us firmly believe that the Darkborn are evil and that we are performing acts of justice is the most effective means of utilization. Unfortunately, I discovered that the very existence of our group destroys the rules of the world. I said that the Fallen Ones always appear around me. This is no coincidence. It is us, the Holy Sons from outside, who interfere with the rules of the world and spread misfortune to those around us.”
“Er…”
Fia hesitated.
She had never heard of Davis’s theory. If the Fallen Ones were really a disease brought by transmigrators, then Nola, who had lived with Claire, and Anastasia’s group around her, should also have a high probability of contracting Darkborn sickness. Yet the fact was that everyone was fine.
“Did Absolute Evil tell you this too?”
“Precisely. Furious, I went to confront the Corona God, demanding he send me back to my original world. But the Corona God kept his mouth shut and even wanted to strip me of my status as Holy Son.”
As his emotions were stirred, Davis’s aura became increasingly violent. He narrated the subsequent events at a rapid pace—he had long anticipated that the gods would act against him, so he fled the Flame Owl Kingdom before the gods could strike. Not wanting to make the method of deicide public, the gods sent down an oracle falsely accusing Davis of betraying the gods and ordered the Flame Owl Kingdom’s army to besiege him. In the end, both sides fought to the death in the Netherworld.

Without reinforcements, Davis naturally lost. However, relying on the death aura of the Netherworld and his own intense hatred for the gods, he survived as an undead and was eventually taken under the wing of the Queen of the Kingdom of Death. Because of his death, he couldn’t remember many things from the past. He only knew that staying in the Weeping Mountains was to execute the orders of the Queen of the Kingdom of Death.
Fia wasn’t interested in Davis’s mission. She looked at the gray light screen in the distant sky.
“Then do you know that a goddess is actually hiding in the Weeping Mountains?”
“Impossible!” Davis denied it without thinking. He even waved his sword vigorously to show his determination. “This is the border of the Netherworld. If a god sets foot here, I will be the first to slaughter her!”
Sure enough, just as I guessed from the reaction of the Flame Greatsword, the goddess Nola spoke of is likely not a real goddess, but a certain Darkborn.
She asked one last question.
“You say this is the border of the Netherworld, which means the illusion barrier here was set up by the Darkborn? Then what’s with the recent monster riots in the Weeping Mountains?”
Davis hesitated for a moment, then shook his head gently.

“I have slept for a thousand years; I am not clear about these things.”
With that, he took two steps back, raising his shield and longsword simultaneously, adopting a combat stance. But compared to the beginning, Fia could feel that Davis’s movements were filled with respect and resolve.
“I have slept for far too long and am out of touch with this world. Agreeing to serve the Queen of the Kingdom of Death in the past was only to accumulate strength for my revenge against the gods in the future. Unfortunately, it seems now that I have no possibility of taking revenge with my own hands. I am tired of this world and tired of my identity as an undead. I want to return to my hometown. God-slayer, since you have the power to kill gods, surely you also have the power to kill me. I have long poured all my swordsmanship into my sword. I have an impudent request.”
Davis looked at Fia sincerely and said, word by word.
“I want to ask you to kill me, and then take my sword. If you meet the Corona God in the future, I implore you to use my sword to slaughter him and fulfill my wish.”
