Chapter 339: Commotion in the Sacred City (1)
A few minutes passed after the Yalcha assassins began their attack.
“Hey, look around before…aiming!!”
Crim was hiding in the shadows, directly in the crossbow’s line of fire…and as she jumped out, she threw her shadow daggers, directly at the White Robe with the crossbow.
It flew straight at his right hand, forcing him to hold his crossbow with his left hand instead, all the while Crim, a young girl with a small body, rushed at him in a zig-zag pattern, making it impossible for him to aim at her.
“That makes…three!!”
As soon as she was close enough to him, she manifested another shadow dagger, tearing his throat with it. The critical hit instantly erased his HP bar, and he vanished amongst light particles.
…That was Crim’s third takedown since the fight started.
Around a third of all the White Robes had been defeated by then, and Crim snuck back into the shadows, already eyeing her next prey.
“Ugh…I still can’t say I enjoy taking down human enemies…”
It was a relief seeing the enemies go down, while also leaving a sour after taste.
There were a number of differences between free-roaming human NPCs and human enemies…which mostly boiled down to their intelligence, only NPCs possessed free will. Enemies tended to have more broad action patterns, at a certain point becoming repetitive.
Another was their deaths… NPCs would leave a lingering corpse, while enemies would instantly shatter into light particles once taken down.
Certain NPCs made that difference a bit harder to tell, like those in the Howling Ogre Ridge involved with the quest to acquire the Katana Skill… But those tended to be the exception.
Sometimes enemies would also suddenly gain awareness too, just like with Rouge. Even if she was more of an exception amongst exceptions.
Either way…
Luckily for Crim…none of the White Robes she took down had lingering corpses, so she knew for a fact that they were simple enemies and not true inhabitants of this world.
She would hate to know she had killed an actual NPC, but for now she could rest easy.
And after she took down a couple more White Robes…
“Hey, Master, why are you charging head first into a fight while in a weakened state?!”
A White Robe that was attempting to snipe Crim suddenly shattered into light particles.
In his stead, a pouting blonde ninja girl appeared…Setsuna.
“You’re way too weak right now, we can’t afford having you die here!”
“Whoops, sorry about that. I was planning on leaving after my conversation, but the situation escalated a bit…too quickly!”
Crim opened her inventory to take out a musket, taking down a crossbow White Robe faster than he could shoot at her, all the while shouting back.
“Actually, how are you fighting to begin with?!”
“Mwahahah, if anything this debuff stops me from accidentally losing control of my body, so it’s easier to think and move!”
“I promise you that’s not how normal people think!”
She cackled loudly while bringing out more muskets to fire wildly at the enemies, and Setsuna could not help but retort at Crim’s explanation devoid of common sense.
As soon as they finished that exchange, Crim threw aside her gun in place of daggers, Setsuna also reaffirmed her grip, and they each dispatched another two White Robes that were trying to sneak in.
Crim’s final shot had also struck a crossbow White Robe, as particles of light could be seen in the distance. Then there was silence, they had dealt with all the enemies in that area.
“Phew… I think we’ve cleared this area. Let’s hurry on up.”
After one last look around to make sure there were no more ranged enemies left, Crim ran upstairs.
The fierce clash audible atop the rampart was still going on, so at least that meant that Theodolite was still alive, easing some of Crim’s worries.
“…But they won’t let us return so easily it would seem.”
They could also hear metallic clangs coming from other places down in the city… More fights had likely broken out there between the White Robes and the Holy Kingdom players. Distant cries and screams echoed too, adding to the chaos.
“Oh well…this probably seems easy considering you’re completely…”
“Hey, I’m completely what?!”
“All of these assassins are pretty strong and annoying to deal with. Do you think they’re okay up there?”
“Again, what did… Ugh whatever. I’m sure they’re fine, it looks like the backup I called for arrived on time.”
Casually looking up…she spotted a figure clad in strange silver armor and a black sword, which had not been there before, fiercely fending off the White Robes…
