Chapter 9: The hospital fiasco
Chapter 9: The hospital fiasco
I froze the second it happened.
One second I was fine, the next I was standing there in the van, warm pee spreading down my pants in front of everyone. I couldn't believe it. My whole body went cold.
Sabrina saw it instantly — of course she did — and practically sang out:
"Jenny! Jake just peed himself!"
My stomach dropped.
"You gotta be kidding me, Jake?!" Jenny snapped, exhausted and stressed and way done with today already.
"Ewwww, Jakie peed hisself," Josie chimed in from the back, completely unhelpful.
"I'm sorry!" I blurted out, voice cracking. "I—I couldn't hold it..."
"I told you we were almost at the hospital," Jenny said, rubbing her forehead. "I don't need this right now. We're going to see Katie because she's hurt, and now this?"
She kept driving, tense and frustrated, and I just stared down at my soaked pants, wishing I could disappear.
When we hit the exit, Jenny swung into a Walgreens parking lot.
"All of you, out," she ordered.
I climbed out slowly, feeling every cold, clingy inch of my wet clothes. Anyone walking by could've noticed if they looked. I prayed nobody did.
Inside, Jenny headed straight to the clothes aisle and grabbed a pair of pants in my size. Then she marched us to the baby aisle and took another pack of 5T–6T pull-ups off the shelf.
My stomach knotted. I already knew what that meant.
She paid, then took me to the bathroom and held out a pull-up and the pants.
"Go in there and put these on."
"But... it was an accident," I said, trying not to cry again. "I'm sorry—"
"Jake." Her voice was tired but firm. "This is your second accident while you're awake. In less than twenty-four hours. And you already wet the bed again even with protection. I can't deal with this right now — I have to get to Katie. So the pull-up stays on until I know things are under control. If you keep it dry, I'll reconsider later."
She said all of this right in front of Sabrina and Josie.
My whole secret — gone.
I gave up arguing. It was pointless.
I took the pull-up and pants and went into the stall, changing as fast as I could with my throat tight and burning. The new pants were a little baggy, thankfully, so the outline didn't show too much.
When I came out, Sabrina was still smirking.
"All good?" Jenny asked.
"Yeah," I muttered.
"Let's go. We're late."
Back in the van, Jenny laid a blanket on my booster seat before I sat. I felt the padding right away — impossible to ignore. Sabrina noticed too, because she looked like Christmas came early.
The drive to the hospital was short, but I wished it lasted forever.
When we finally walked into Katie's room, she was getting her cast put on. Scott explained what happened, and Jenny updated him on my situation — quietly, but not quietly enough. I heard everything.
So did Sabrina.
She leaned over and whispered, "Two accidents and you wet the bed too? Wow."
"Shut up," I muttered.
She giggled and went back to Katie like nothing happened.
I just sat there, sinking deeper into my own embarrassment, barely hearing anything in the room.
And then... my stomach started to hurt.
Probably the Taco Bell.
A bubbling, urgent cramp twisted through me. I clenched everything, trying to hold in the gas, because the last thing I needed was everyone laughing at a loud fart.
But it kept getting worse, so I finally asked Jenny, "Can I go to the bathroom real quick?"
"Yes, of course," she said, standing right away. She walked me to the door. "I'll wait here."
I hurried inside, closed the door, and let out the gas—
—and instantly felt the bottom drop out of my entire life.
It wasn't just gas.
I froze.
I had just... messed the pull-up.
I stared down in horror, my brain scrambling. Panic shot through me like electricity. I tore it off and threw it away, cleaned myself up with half the toilet paper in the building, then shoved my pants back on and went commando.
I took a shaky breath and stepped out into the hallway.
"All good?" Jenny asked.
"Y-yeah," I said, not looking at her.
She narrowed her eyes. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. I'm fine."
But she lifted my shirt slightly, checking my waistband, and her whole face changed.
She didn't need to ask — she already knew.
Without a word, she walked into the bathroom, saw the pull-up in the trash, and gasped.
"You... pooped in it?"
My face burned hotter than it ever had.
Before I could answer, a nurse walked over. "Everything okay here?"
"Yeah," Jenny said tightly. "This one just had an accident in his pull-up."
Great.
Now the hospital staff knew too.
"Oh — I can grab some supplies," the nurse offered.
"Yes, thank you," Jenny said, clearly overwhelmed.
The nurse came back with a basket: wipes, powder, rash cream, and diapers — actual diapers — with Sesame Street prints.
I felt like the floor should open up and swallow me whole.
Jenny motioned me back into the bathroom.
"The pull-ups are in the car," I said quietly, almost begging.
"Those are for big kids who aren't having constant accidents," she said. "And you just proved they're not enough right now."
I didn't argue. Arguing would only make it worse.
"Up," she said, pointing to the changing table. "No fuss. Please."
I hopped up on the changing table tears welling up in my eyes and Jenny laid me back pushing my chest down gently.
She grabbed my pants waistband and slid my pants down to my ankles. On instinct I covered my privates up and Jenny grabbed my hands saying "Hey kiddo I can't do my job with your hands in the way." And moved them to my sides.
I covered my face in embarrassment tears full flowing at this point.
"Shh shh don't fret." She comforted "I've changed lots of diapers in my life and even big kids like you."
She grabbed baby wipes from the basket and began stabbing my privates then grabbed my pants at the ankle and lifted them wiping my crack and put my feet back down.
Then she grabbed a size 5 diaper and a size 6 and held them up for comparison to see what would fit better.
She went with the size 6 and opened it up then with one hand she grabbed my pants at the ankle again and lifted my legs and butt up just enough to slip the diaper underneath me.
She lowered my butt onto the diaper and pushed my knees apart and positioned my ankles together. I was really in the baby changing position with my little bat and balls hitting the breeze.
Then she started to baby talk to me when she grabbed the Desitin saying things like "here we go this will help you not get a rash. Doesn't that feel much better than to be in a stinky pull up?"
Then she grabbed the baby powder and sprinkled it on me saying "Mmm that smells good I bet it feels just as good as it feels huh."
Subconsciously I let out a quiet "yeah" and she said "See this isn't so bad no need for tears." It was strange but she was somehow charming me and comforting me. I felt like a complete baby and vulnerable in that moment but she made it seem more normal with how she was talking.
She spread the powder around a little bit getting all the crevices and then put the powder back and rinsed her hands briefly. Then she came back over and grabbed the front of the diaper and pulled it snug through my legs securing my little guy.
The front went all the way up to almost my belly button and completely ensnared me. She turned by body slightly and grabbed one of the tapes unsticking it and pulling across my thigh to the front of the diaper securing it on Elmo's face.
Then she went to the other side and repeated the same. I immediately felt the snugness all around my crotch and could only imagine how ridiculous I looked.
And then to my surprise Jenny took her fingers and put them on the inside of the leg cuffs running them along the crease pulling out the leak guards and adjusting them. "There we go" she said and grabbed my arms and helped me get off the table onto my feet.
When I got down I felt the bulk in between my legs and couldn't close them all the way. It forced my legs apart slightly. She got down and pulled up my pants up over the diaper. The diaper was much more bulky than the pull up and left a very noticeable bulge. And it stuck out of my waistband so I fixed my shirt to cover it up.
Jenny gave my butt a little tap and returned the basket to the nurse, thanked her, and headed back toward Katie's room. I waddled behind her, because there wasn't really another way to walk in that thing.
Inside the room, everything was back to normal — TV on, everyone talking — like the world hadn't just ended for me in a hospital bathroom.
But to me... it kind of had.
