Chapter 45: Flying Bat Beast
Chapter 45: Flying Bat Beast
The tanks roaring past made An Xiaowei’s face turn pale, and she gripped the steering wheel tightly.
Zhou Liming said from the side, “Xiaowei, relax, relax. Don’t be afraid. We will leave this place. Trust me.”
An Xiaowei nodded and replied, “Uh!” She knew Zhou Liming’s ability, and his madness at dusk yesterday might be her only safety.
From the back of the truck bed, Zheng Le’s voice came: “Dean, I’m scared, I’m scared…” Zhou Yuan Chang tried to suppress his own fear and said softly, “Little Le, don’t be afraid. Look, we have soldiers protecting us. It’s very safe. We will leave soon. Don’t be afraid.”
Zhou Liming’s heart skipped a beat. Gritting his teeth, he pointed at the cars blocking the way ahead and said to An Xiaowei, “Drive. Crash through them.”
An Xiaowei was stunned but her expression turned serious. She stepped on the gas pedal hard. The heavy truck roared, startling the driver next to them. He was about to stick his head out of the window to curse, but when he saw the heavy truck going crazy, with its tires screeching against the road, it took a fierce start and crashed directly into the rear of a Buick LaCrosse ahead, pushing the LaCrosse away.
The people in the Buick LaCrosse were caught off guard by the sudden collision and couldn’t react in time. They just felt their car being pushed into a Honda Accord parked beside it.
The driver who had just wanted to stick his head out and curse suddenly widened his eyes. In his eyes at that moment, this heavy truck had turned into a fierce beast.
Zhou Liming was glad he had chosen a heavy truck. He could ignore those small cars below. At this critical moment, he could carve out a bloody path. Those small cars, whose weight was only similar to the heavy truck’s tires, could not possibly withstand the heavy truck’s impact. Although not as fierce as the tanks just now, it was enough.
The most important thing was that Zhou Liming and his group arrived a bit late, so the heavy truck had not stopped inside. Otherwise, even if it was fierce, it wouldn’t have had such powerful momentum to crash through so many cars and rush onto the highway. Compared to the heavy truck, these sedans were only slightly better than toys. Many of them were completely deformed after a single collision.
An Xiaowei had never been so crazy before. At least, she had never imagined that one day she would act like this.
Each time the heavy truck crashed into something, the whole vehicle shuddered. However, An Xiaowei was no longer nervous or afraid. The heavy truck crashed through the cars sideways. After crashing through several cars in a row, it finally emerged onto the road that the tank had just cleared.
An Xiaowei shifted gears skillfully and pressed the gas pedal to the floor again. The heavy truck rushed out like a monster.
The heavy truck, now free, only slowed down after passing the checkpoint. The road ahead was filled with panicked people fleeing in confusion. They crowded the highway, filling every inch of space where people could walk. Under these circumstances, the heavy truck could not move as it had just before. After all, humans and cars are two different concepts. They could crash through cars to escape, but crashing through such a densely populated highway would not be tolerated by the soldiers at the checkpoint. They were not pushovers.
The cars that had squeezed through the checkpoint early on also fell into the same trouble as Zhou Liming’s group. In the crowd rushing forward, running on foot was actually faster than driving.
“Gack… gack…” sounds came from the sky, somewhat like the call of a crane.
But happening at night in this area, it definitely wasn’t a crane or anything like that. More accurately, birds in coastal areas were much more sensitive to danger and had long since left. How could it be a crane?
A dozen black shadows appeared in the night sky. With their calls, flapping sounds came: “Flap, flap, flap!”
Many people looked up, following the sounds from the sky. They saw the black shadows constantly getting larger. Under the lights of the Small Town, their shapes were revealed.
If such fierce beasts appeared in a movie, people might think it wasn’t strange. But in reality, monsters that only existed in movies appeared, causing more than just simple panic. Their body shapes were similar to Flying Dragons, but their heads were like bats. Their bodies were covered with thick, pale red scales. A pair of huge fleshy wings flapped as they swooped down from the air.
When the pair of fleshy wings spread out, spanning more than ten meters, the airflow from their landing could be felt even from dozens of meters above the ground.
“Fire! Fire!”
Following the order, the soldiers who discovered this situation raised their machine guns upwards. From the residential buildings, they fired crazily at the Flying Bat Beasts in the sky. Several rapid-fire machine guns sprayed bullets, which were almost like rain, forming a curtain of fire and blood in the night sky, attacking the Flying Bat Beasts as they hit their broad fleshy wings.
“Thud, thud” sounds echoed as bullets hit the Flying Bat Beast’s scale armor. Only occasionally did some bullets tear through the scales, but they only damaged the surface muscles at most.
The attacked Flying Bat Beasts somersaulted in the air. Then, with a mighty slap of their huge fleshy wings, the powerful airflow even knocked over some people below. Under the force of the flapping, they flew over people’s heads and rushed toward the various machine gun positions.
“Hurry, stop it! Fire! Fire!”
A lieutenant twisted his face and roared loudly. All the soldiers raised their guns and fired crazily. Streams of fire appeared in the night sky, concentrating on the single Flying Bat Beast flying toward them. But what caused panic was that the bullets seemed to have little effect. Submachine guns and pistols couldn’t even penetrate its scales. Only a few heavy machine guns managed to tear through its scales.
In an instant, the Flying Bat Beast lunged onto the roof. Its entire body seemed to crash into the soldiers firing at it. As it slid, its fleshy wings swept violently.
The dozen or so soldiers on the roof were swept away like plates on a dining table, then fell. The powerful force swept both men and their equipment into the air before they crashed down.
For the Flying Bat Beast, the blood pumped out from its body by heavy machine gun bullets was merely a minor injury. It did not affect its movement at all. After clearing the soldiers on this floor, it slapped its fleshy wings vigorously again. In a gust of airflow, it took off, circled in the air, and dove down again.
A soldier shouldered an anti-tank missile launcher, knelt on one foot, and aimed at the diving Flying Bat Beast. The anti-tank missile spewed a burst of firelight and was launched.
A loud “Boom” erupted. A ball of firelight appeared, illuminating a patch of the sky. The diving Flying Bat Beast let out a shrill, mournful scream. One of its fleshy wings was pierced by the anti-tank missile. The violent explosion almost tore that wing off. But its momentum did not decrease. Due to the heavy damage, it lost its balance and crashed down headfirst, hitting the cement roof. Amidst flying cement debris, it viciously pinned the soldier underneath its body, grinding him into meat paste.
The heavily damaged Flying Bat Beast struggled to fly again after stopping its slide, but its other fleshy wing was almost broken, making flight impossible.
Its “Gack!” screech instead attracted fire from other positions. Without orders, the machine guns turned back to the Flying Bat Beast on the roof and opened fire crazily.
However, there were fourteen Flying Bat Beasts this time. While the soldiers attacked this wounded one, several others flew past the residential buildings. Then, they opened their mouths in the air and let out a sharp, strange “squeak-squeak” sound. As if spitting something out, silently, a loud “Bang” echoed. Several firing positions were hit as if by a heavy blow. The entire floor was hammered deep downwards, and the soldiers on top turned directly into meat paste.
The terrifying sonic attack almost sheared off the entire floor of the building.
Some of them landed in the crowds. With their mouths wide open, amidst a foul stench, they bit the approaching people, biting them off cleanly and swallowing them continuously.
With a sweep of their powerful fleshy wings, the densely packed crowd was swept away directly. The sound of bones shattering was so clear. Each Flying Bat Beast that landed cleared a large area in a moment, causing massive casualties.
The panicked people no longer cared about the congestion on the highway and fled to all sides.
Zhou Liming’s pupils contracted. The Flying Bat Beasts had completely turned this place into their dining spot, feeding crazily. Judging by their reckless behavior, they were likely Fierce Beasts that had just landed on land today. They needed to replenish the energy lacking from their rapid growth.
Their appearance also meant that the types of Fierce Beasts were no longer limited to land. They were also present in the sky.
A Flying Bat Beast landed next to the heavy truck. Its powerful legs crushed a man and a woman to the ground. Its body weight, combined with the force of the landing, squeezed the insides out of the man and the woman. The people under its fleshy wings, in terror, were pressed to the ground and struggled constantly to get up.
It seemed the Flying Bat Beast had targeted the nearby heavy truck. Its large size made it the first target.
“Damn it!”
Zhou Liming cursed loudly. He decisively jumped out of the car and shouted to the panicked An Xiaowei, “I’ll draw it away. You take the Dean and the others and run.”
An Xiaowei gritted her teeth and didn’t answer. She pressed the gas pedal to the floor again, and the heavy truck shot out.
The Flying Bat Beast found that its intended target was trying to escape. It let out a cry, flapped its fleshy wings, and ran on the ground.
