Chapter 95: Ambush
Chapter 95: Ambush
“Does this really count as the end of the world?”
Sitting there in a daze, Zhou Liming asked himself this question. With a population of nearly seven billion, more than half had died or gone missing under the rampage of the Fierce Beasts. The entire world’s coastlines had fallen, which meant that the most economically developed areas of humanity were all occupied by Fierce Beasts. The cities that represented human civilization were shrouded under an endless Beast Tide.
The Fierce Beasts were constantly compressing humanity’s living space. Zhou Liming simply did not know where humanity’s way out lay, or where they needed to retreat to next.
Only now did Zhou Liming realize that the power of one person, even if he could destroy heaven and earth, was so powerless and pale in the face of such a global catastrophe. It was not something human power could resist. Perhaps all of humanity was now in a state of pessimism, because in the face of this entire disaster, humanity had shown no brilliance at all.
In the distance, there was the corpse of a dead soldier. With Zhou Liming’s eyesight, he could see some white maggots crawling in and out; it was extremely disgusting.
Beside the three armored vehicles, experts were walking back and forth holding small instruments. From time to time, they scooped up some soil to collect samples. Sometimes they observed some plants to see if there were any changes. Occasionally, they would grab some insects to check the level of radiation, and sometimes several people would gather to exchange discussions.
Zhou Liming checked the M99 in his hand. After confirming that everything was normal, he held it in his arms again.
Since joining the X Squadron, although he had not used weapons very often, Zhou Liming had still learned the most basic thing a soldier needs to remember. That is, at any time, one must ensure that the gun in one’s hand is in optimal condition. This would give you more of an advantage than others in battle.
He looked at his watch; it was now 7:30 Beijing time, which meant it was around 5:00 local time in India.
Suddenly, in the distance, Kahn stood up abruptly. He listened nervously and carefully to something, and then roared frantically: “Attack, attack!” With the Fierce Beast Gene of a wolf-type Fierce Beast, his hearing was amazing.
In fact, at this moment, everyone heard it. From several kilometers away, the sound of artillery fire came, followed by the shrill sound of shells cutting through the air. A few seconds later, they smashed down fiercely. With a “boom,” sand and stones flew everywhere. After the explosion blasted out a crater, countless sands and stones were splashed up. Zhou Liming even saw a piece of shrapnel fly past him.
It was not just one cannon, but three, constantly shelling the area near the armored vehicles.
“Everyone get down, get down…”
Kahn shouted. One by one, the experts all hurriedly threw themselves on the ground, holding their heads, not daring to move, trying their best to stick their bodies to the ground. Countless pieces of shrapnel shot out from the explosions, creating a sound of tearing air. An armored vehicle was hit, and a hole was torn directly in the cabin area. The shell that penetrated it, at the moment of explosion, forcibly turned half of the armored vehicle into leftover waste.
Zhou Liming had never experienced this before. Seeing the ferocity of the artillery, he now understood why human life was so fragile in the face of war.
If it were normal times, Zhou Liming could have rushed in front of them the instant he discovered the attack and taken out the artillery. A few kilometers was nothing in his eyes; it was just a hundred-meter sprint to arrive. But now it was different; this place was in the center of the Radiation Zone, so he could only act like an ordinary soldier, unable to do anything.
Fortunately, the artillery stopped after firing only about twenty shells. Then came the sound of many cars speeding, and a chorus of howling shouts.
“Damn it, we didn’t run into a Fierce Beast attack, but we ran into a human attack. What the hell is this?” Yang Ran’s cursing came over the communication channel. Zhou Liming looked up and saw him lying behind a rock, observing through a sniper scope.
Zhou Liming scrambled up to the top of the sand dune in a few moves. Then he raised his M99 and looked through the scope; he could see dust flying in the distance and heard the roar of car engines.
In the lens, there were more than a dozen military trucks and several armored vehicles rushing towards the place where everyone was. On these trucks, some soldiers wearing Indian military uniforms were standing on them, holding mounted machine guns. They did not have Radiation Suits at all, and many were dressed in rags, revealing their dark skin inside.
These soldiers, immersed in fanaticism, many were waving their hats in the air, shouting frantically. Their twisted faces were full of hideousness.
“They are surviving soldiers from the previous Frontline,” Qiao Bingsen shouted. “They have been severely radiated. They are a group of madmen who don’t want their lives. Take them out. Snipers, take out their cars; don’t let them get close.”
These surviving soldiers were positioned relatively far back at the time, so the shockwave did not reach them, and they managed to survive. However, the terrible radiation had irradiated them, which made them feel despair. They hated the whole world. Knowing that they themselves were radiated and their future would be miserable, a fate worse than death, they were not afraid of dying at all. They were a group of people who were even more like death warriors than death warriors themselves.
Once they were allowed to get close, they could certainly be killed, but the guns in their hands were all standard equipment, which could likewise kill the people here or leave a bullet hole in their Radiation Suits.
In fact, everyone realized that they absolutely could not let them get close.
Zhou Liming raised his M99. The effective sniper range of this gun was 1500 meters, but Zhou Liming could make it effective at 2000 meters as well. This was the benefit brought by the Fierce Beast Gene; he could grasp the target and still hit it accurately at this distance. So, under the ten-power scope, he quickly locked onto a military truck rushing at the very front…
With a “bang,” his powerful arm strength made the M99 feel like an ordinary handgun, causing only a slight vibration in Zhou Liming’s arm as he held it.
The low gunshot had just sounded when the scope already showed the entire front of the military truck being dented by the bullet. The smashed front bumper splintered and flew apart in all directions, and the entire engine was destroyed instantly. The car, suddenly losing power, still rushed forward a few meters due to inertia, and then overturned onto the sand.
The dozen or so soldiers on top were thrown directly off and rolled into the sand.
The sounds of “bang” and “boom” rang out one after another; the others had made their moves one after another. With the efforts of the snipers, these dozen or so cars were destroyed in just two short minutes. But several armored vehicles did not slow down; they quickly bypassed these destroyed cars and pounced frantically.
The soldiers on the destroyed cars all got down from the vehicles, holding their guns and howling as they charged forward.
From afar, their cursing could still be heard.
However, what terrified Zhou Liming somewhat was that even further away, there was an even larger number of soldiers charging. It was a dense, black mass; there were at least a thousand of them. These military cars and armored vehicles were merely their vanguard.
The situation had developed to this point, completely beyond everyone’s expectations.
“Damn it!” Qiao Bingsen cursed fiercely. He took the bullet chains off his body one by one and placed them nearby. He took off the bullet box he was carrying and set it by the machine gun. He pulled out a bullet chain, connected it to the M134, and then set it up on the sand dune, aiming at the dense mass of surviving Indian soldiers charging forward in the distance.
Gunfire erupted loudly. These surviving Indian soldiers started firing wildly from a distance. Bullets skimmed over everyone’s heads from time to time, sinking into the dirt with a “thud.”
