Chapter 49: The First Day of Transmigrating into a Post-Apocalyptic Supernatural Novel
An Yi surfaced from chaos, his consciousness rising like a sunken ship, with the dizzy aftermath of suffocation. He found himself curled up in a corner.
He tried to push himself up with his arms, but touched a rough wooden board covered in splinters, the marks of chopping clearly visible on it.
An Yi's hand paused, and he forced his heavy eyes open.
The familiar bedroom was gone from his sight. Sure enough, he wasn't at home.
He instinctively lowered his head and spread his hands. His aged fingers had regained their youth, becoming fair, slender, and smooth-skinned.
He had transmigrated again.
After decades of loving and living with Ge Lian, his life had ended once again. Upon opening his eyes, he was reborn.
The third time.
Did he get a new body every time he died?
Why?
The first two times, he'd transmigrated into novels. Was this also a transmigration into a book?
An Yi silently inhaled the turbid air, mixed with dust, sweat, and a faint smell of blood. He huddled in the corner, grimy and disheveled.
By the dim moonlight, he took in his surroundings: In the dilapidated room, a few scattered figures crouched in various corners, breathing suppressed, a deathly silence broken only by soft rustling sounds and occasional suppressed coughs.
The moonlight streamed in through the window, tinged with blood-red.
An Yi lowered his eyelashes, quickly regaining his composure.
He was used to this. Judging by the look of things, this world was anything but easy to live in. He needed to figure out the situation as soon as possible.
The moonlight fell on his face through his long lashes, casting deep shadows in his eye sockets.
An Yi instinctively accessed the memories in his mind.
The original owner of this body was also named An Yi, just eighteen, in the prime of his youth. He had just passed the college entrance exam and entered university, but before he could enjoy his college life, the apocalypse arrived.
First, plants, trees, birds, and beasts inexplicably went berserk, as if gaining self-awareness and starting to attack humans. Before the country could figure out the cause,
the outbreak hit.
That's right—the zombies everyone knows about.
Outbreaks happened randomly, without warning, anywhere, to anyone, spreading like wildfire, quickly shattering the once stable order.
Civilization was torn apart in a short time, with only a handful of survivors left.
Fortunately, human technology had not disappeared. After the initial panic, under organized leadership, artillery shelled the land and armored forces rolled through, crushing everything, eliminating ninety percent of the zombies and mutant plants and animals.
However, the vast oceans, deep forests, and endless deserts—domains humans had never truly conquered—became endless breeding grounds and nests for mutant creatures.
As the apocalypse set in and animals and plants mutated, they continuously surged into human living areas, killing on a massive scale.
Humans and mutants fell into a stalemate.
The ocean's power was too much for humans to handle, so humanity retreated inland.
But this caused humans to gather together. Though their numbers had drastically reduced initially, the concentrated population grew again, leading to food shortages and a dire lack of everyday necessities.
Thus, survivors united to establish safe bases in different cities, keeping the flame of humanity alive in hopes of continued survival.
It was under these circumstances that some people suddenly awakened supernatural abilities.
The types of abilities were diverse, with common ones like water control, fire control, and strength enhancement emerging one after another, along with rare abilities gradually showing themselves.
Under the leadership of people with abilities, human territory expanded once again.
Humans once again seemed to have the upper hand over nature.
That's how the original owner barely survived and was currently traveling with classmates from the same school, following a few people with abilities, heading to the nearest safe base.
It was said that there, even those who hadn’t awakened abilities could survive safely, and those with skills could even find a job to ensure they had enough to eat and wear.
But yesterday, while traveling, the original owner was wounded in the arm by a mutant plant. Luckily, even if wounded by zombies or mutants, one wouldn’t turn into a zombie like in some pre-apocalypse novels.
Unfortunately, that mutant plant was poisonous.
Original owner: "..."
His intense will to survive erupted, unexpectedly shaking free of his genetic shackles and nearly touching the threshold of awakening an ability.
Unfortunately, he still couldn’t make it through. This young life faded away in a dark corner that night, dazed and disoriented.
An Yi silently prayed in his heart for the young soul, hoping that he too could be reborn and not have to struggle in this apocalypse.
An Yi looked down, turned his palm up, and with a thought, white vapor appeared in his hand and a surge of cold burst forth.
An Yi quickly dismissed the ability. The cold dissipated as if crushed by an unseen force, vanishing instantly, leaving only a trace of residual chill in his palm, unnoticed by others.
Then, without making a fuss, he picked up a small wooden splinter by his foot.
With a slight mental command—the splinter vanished into thin air, as if it had never existed. With another thought, it reappeared between his fingers, carrying the faint warmth of wood.
An Yi took a deep breath. Two abilities: one for controlling water and ice, and a spatial ability.
Both were powerful abilities.
But... this water and ice ability should have been the one awakened by the original owner. What about this spatial ability?
Was it something his own soul brought?
However, with these two abilities, An Yi's chances of surviving the apocalypse would be greatly improved.
Since he was already here, he'd just take things as they came. First priority: survival.
But... why did it feel like each new transmigration was worse than the last?
An Yi composed himself and decided to rest well while it was still safe, as he would need to continue traveling tomorrow and needed to conserve his energy.
The next day, at the crack of dawn.
An Yi slowly opened his eyes. Soft rustling sounds came from all around—people were already up and packing.
There was a commotion at the doorway, but voices were kept low.
"What’s the situation outside?"
"I don't know. It was fine just a moment ago, but suddenly a lot of vines appeared!"
"Vines? Has a mutated plant grown over here? Has anyone seen its main body?"
Seeing the people by the door shaking their heads to show they didn't know, the questioner frowned. "I'll go take a look. Wake everyone else up, keep quiet, and be ready to leave at any moment."
The speaker was a woman, her voice slightly hoarse, as if her vocal cords had been injured. She was tall and powerfully built, standing there with a calm and imposing presence.
