Chapter 50: Day Two of Being Thrown into an Apocalypse Powers Novel
An Yi wasn't part of their discussion. He stood up and packed his meager belongings.
At the same time, info about the woman who spoke popped into his head.
She was an ability user named Weng Daixuan, whose power was enhanced strength. Along the way, she had taken care of most of the zombies and mutant animals and plants they encountered.
She was the backbone of this temporary team.
The sudden appearance of the mutant plant made everyone restless. People in the room got up one by one, clutching their few belongings tightly, ready to flee at any moment.
Weng Daixuan, who'd gone to check, came back quickly. Her expression was grave, her brow furrowed in a way that made her look formidable, but her words were gentle: "Don't be afraid, it's nothing serious."
Weng Daixuan offered a brief, firm reassurance without elaborating.
Her sharp eyes swept across the crowd, and she quickly designated tasks: "Chen Li, you and a few others come with me to clear those mutant vines. Qin Hong, you stay behind and protect everyone, especially the elderly and children."
Her gaze fell on a silent but steady-eyed young man in the corner, and she gave a slight nod: "Niu Junzhe, assist Qin Hong and keep an eye on things."
The named young man, Niu Junzhe, nodded firmly and silently took his place beside Qin Hong.
It's instinctual for plants to fear fire. Not having a pyrokinetic was a problem.
Weng Daixuan quickly laid out a plan: "Mutant plants are naturally afraid of fire. Chen Li, you and I will control the main vine! The rest of you, find any flammable materials—rags, splintered wood, anything—and wrap them around. Wait for my signal to light them! Move quickly!"
The door was pushed open a little wider, silently.
The group stepped into the yard to check out the mutant vines. Weng Daixuan and Chen Li shot forward like two leopards.
The moment they moved outside, the scene was hair-raising.
The once-silent courtyard and broken corridor were now covered in dark green vines. They writhed like living things, gleaming with a cold, toxic sheen under the faint morning light.
Some vine tips flicked out like snake tongues, seemingly searching for the scent of prey.
"Now!" Weng Daixuan barked. The muscles in her arms instantly bulged, veins like writhing dragons rising under her skin!
With a low growl, she grabbed the thickest main vine with precision, which was trying to wrap around the doorframe.
Feeling threatened, the vine twisted and whipped around with shocking force. It struck the broken wall nearby, sending debris flying.
Weng Daixuan strained with all her might, one hand hauling the writhing vine while her feet dug into the dirt. With her free hand, she grabbed another vine attacking the doorframe and yanked it clean off!
She hissed through her teeth: "You bastard!"
Chen Li roared and lunged at another thick vine. The two of them, like wrestlers grappling giant pythons, locked onto the slippery, tough vines.
"Now! Light it!" Weng Daixuan's voice came out hoarse.
The others, who'd already rushed in from all sides, were ready. They quickly wrapped rags and dry straw around the vines the two had pinned.
A man flicked a lighter and tossed it at the wildly writhing vine.
Fwoosh!
The small flame hit the fuel and instantly exploded into flames!
The lighter heated up and popped with a bang.
The fire eagerly lapped at the vines, crackling and sizzling like an animal's scream.
The burning vines thrashed wildly, surging with newfound strength. Weng Daixuan and Chen Li clenched their teeth, veins bulging on their foreheads, their feet sinking deep into the mud as they were almost pulled over.
A fierce glint flashed in Weng Daixuan's eyes. With a sudden burst of strength, she tore a large section of the burning vine from the main body! A thick, foul-smelling dark green liquid sprayed from the break.
The fire intensified. The people released the vines and quickly retreated. The probing vine tendrils were quickly burned into black charcoal, drooping and snapping off.
The air was thick with the acrid smell of burning and the stench of plant sap.
Chen Li gasped for breath, wiping sweat and green sap from his face.
The tense nerves of the people in the yard relaxed slightly, and quiet murmurs of relief were heard.
Weng Daixuan also let out a sigh of relief. Though her brow was still furrowed, her tense body relaxed a little: "Quick! We can't stay here long. Leave immediately! The smell of blood and the commotion might attract other things!"
After a brief stir, the team quickly regrouped and followed Weng Daixuan and Chen Li, moving swiftly through the gaps in the ruins toward the safe base.
An Yi walked in the middle-back of the group, his eyes alertly scanning his surroundings, especially the loose soil underfoot.
So this is what a mutant plant looks like?
Just as the team had gone less than a hundred meters and was passing a relatively open abandoned square with a cracked, uneven ground—
Boom! The ground beneath them shook violently without warning!
"Earthquake?!" someone screamed in terror.
"No! It's underground!!" An Yi's pupils contracted sharply as he shouted a warning!
Before his voice faded—
"Thump—thump—thump—!"
Accompanied by the cringe-inducing sound of earth tearing and debris flying, dozens of giant vines—far thicker, darker, and covered in a cold, metallic-looking horny layer—burst violently from the cracks under their feet and the surrounding ruins!
These were the real bodies!
What had been burned earlier were nothing but their tiny "fingers" reaching out!
The thick vines whipped, lashed, and coiled with a screeching sound, screaming through the air so fast they left afterimages!
A middle-aged man too slow to react was struck in the waist by a vine. He screamed and was flung like a ragdoll into a broken wall, knocked out—maybe dead, maybe alive.
The ground split open beneath a young woman's feet. A thick vine coiled around her legs like a giant python, tightening instantly. The sickening crack of bones was clear, and the woman let out a bloodcurdling scream!
"Go!" Weng Daixuan's eyes bulging with rage as she lunged to the side.
A vine twisted in front of her and swept viciously.
With no other choice, Weng Daixuan grabbed a flailing vine with all her might, but the immense force lifted her off the ground and slammed her heavily to the ground!
Nearby, Chen Li was struck in the chest by another vine, spitting blood as he flew backward!
An Yi's heart pounded in his chest.
Before he could even react, he saw a vine tip lunge like a spear toward a teenager who had fallen to the ground. An Yi's eyes went cold and determined.
He slid forward like a ghost at a speed far beyond normal human limits, and just in time, he tackled the terrified teen to the ground and rolled them aside!
Sharp vine tips scraped against his back and pierced the ground, leaving a deep pit!
At the same time, his left hand shot out like lightning, precisely grabbing the arm of the woman entangled in the vines and about to be dragged into the crack.
"Ah——!" Amid the woman's desperate scream, An Yi felt an overwhelming force transmitted from the vine, nearly tearing his arm off.
He grunted, planting his feet firmly into the ground, his knuckles whitening from the strain, while an icy breath seeped almost uncontrollably from the palm gripping the vine.
At this life-or-death moment, a scorching, blindingly bright red light suddenly descended from the sky!
