Chapter 517: Day Three in the Interstellar World
George Conrad said, elbowing Ma Zhiye next to him.
Ma Zhiye rocked a little from the nudge, finally tearing his gaze from the window to shoot George a blank look.
George didn't bother with him and just kept smiling at An Yi.
Then An Yi's eyes landed on the last person.
Xing Ruize—the team captain.
He hadn't moved since An Yi walked in—same spot, same posture—standing by the window, backlit, his frame as straight as a freshly drawn blade.
The stripes on his shoulder insignia glinted coldly under the starlight, and his uniform cuffs were neatly fastened at the wrists, without a single wrinkle.
His eyes landed on An Yi—once, then again.
An Yi met his gaze and gave a slight smile.
Xing Ruize went rigid, his face giving nothing away.
An Yi raised an eyebrow. This wasn't how it went in the original novel, was it? Shouldn't he have greeted him normally?
Why was he just staring at him without saying a word?
Comments section:
"......So cold."
"What's with this male lead's face? The dude's saying hi to him!"
"Wait, that counts as a greeting? He just cracked a tiny smile!"
"That's still better than his ice-cold face. This kind of male lead isn't in style anymore—now everyone's into the psycho ones and the goofballs! (pointing fingers.jpg)"
"......"
"Hold on, what's going through the male lead's head? Something feels off... kinda GAY!"
"No way, is the author trying to ship them? There was no sign of that before!"
"None of the earlier characters got whole paragraphs about how hot or pretty they were! (suspicious frog meme.jpg)"
"@Author! If you're gonna ship them, at least keep it subtle! We straight dudes can't handle this!"
"A chill just went up my spine! (sarcastic.jpg)"
"Might still give it a try!"
"LOL, male lead: Who am I? Where am I? Why is this guy smiling at me? Why only at me? Not at Jiang Biao and the others?"
"OMG, the male lead actually thinks this new guy An Yi is weaponizing his looks—smiling at him just because he's hot—and he's thinking he won't let his guard down even so, keeping his high standards! Please! I'm begging you! The dude just smiled politely! Male lead! What are you doing?! (slaps you.jpg)"
"Begging? Get in line!"
"The one above, you're killing me!"
"Is this An Yi really that hot when he smiles? Xing Ruize, Jiang Biao, Ma Zhiye, Cheng Hong, and George all think so?"
"Yes, yes, yes! Just that one moment! I screen-capped it! Let me show you!"
"How are you screen-capping??? This is literally text!"
"Using my brain cells."
"???"
"I can't even with you, are you crazy?!"
"......"
An Yi: "......"
Cong Tianyue's voice rang out, cutting off the comments section as it spiraled further off-topic.
"Xing Ruize." She looked at the man by the window. "I'm handing him over to you. For this operation, he's with your team. You figure out the details yourselves."
Xing Ruize finally stirred.
He nodded slightly, acknowledging her.
His gaze moved from Cong Tianyue back to An Yi.
This time, his gaze lingered longer.
Then he finally spoke.
"Xing Ruize," he said, his voice just as cold as his face. "Captain."
An Yi gave a nod.
"An Yi," he said, his tone even. "Repairer."
Xing Ruize looked at An Yi, not saying a word.
An Yi looked back at him, equally silent.
Xing Ruize: "......"
Starlight spilled between them from outside the window. On the surface of that massive blue-white planet, swirling bands of gas turned slowly.
In the distance, a fleet of warships cruised by, their hulls reflecting the star's light and casting shifting shadows across the transparent alloy dome.
George's eyes darted back and forth between the two, then he leaned over to Ma Zhiye and whispered something.
Ma Zhiye, face blank, took a step away from him.
Jiang Biao cleared his throat.
"So, uh..." he said, looking at Xing Ruize. "Captain, how about we do introductions first? The kid's been standing here a while."
Xing Ruize finally tore his eyes away from An Yi, tilting his head slightly to scan the people behind him.
"Jiang Biao," he said.
Jiang Biao immediately puffed out his chest and flashed An Yi a grin. "Vice captain, assault specialist. Just holler if you need anything."
"Ma Zhiye."
Ma Zhiye looked away from the window and nodded at An Yi without saying a word.
"Assault trooper," Xing Ruize added.
"Cheng Hong."
The guy leaning against the window raised a hand and gave An Yi a casual wave, his wave so lazy it seemed he couldn't be bothered to talk.
"Sniper," Xing Ruize said.
"George Conrad."
George snapped to attention and flashed An Yi a big grin. "Medic! Come to me if you get hurt! But hopefully you won't!"
He laughed at his own joke.
Ma Zhiye stared at him expressionlessly.
Xing Ruize wrapped up the introductions.
Five people.
There were five of them: Captain Xing Ruize, also the squad's commander; Vice Captain Jiang Biao, an assault trooper; Ma Zhiye, also an assault trooper; Cheng Hong, the sniper; and George Conrad, the medic.
An Yi mentally matched each face to each name and gave a mental nod.
With the original owner as the engineer and repairer, the team was now complete.
An Yi looked at Xing Ruize.
Xing Ruize was staring back at him again.
His gaze was still cold, but for some reason, Jiang Biao, standing beside him, shivered.
Comment section:
"???"
"Why's the male lead staring at him again?"
"Maybe he thinks An Yi's good-looking! (jk)"
"Just 'cause he's good-looking doesn't mean he can stare like that! (I see everything.jpg)"
"Is this workplace harassment? (stroking chin.jpg) (thinking.jpg)"
"It's not that serious, right?!"
"Just admiring the view~"
"Exactly, appreciating beauty is a human instinct!"
"Stop, stop, stop—here we go again, huh?"
"80% appearance description alert!"
"But the problem is they're both dudes?! Is this okay?"
"Ask and the answer is the author's just baiting the shippers! It's not like they'd actually write gay romance! (don't care.jpg)"
"LMAO exactly!"
"Hahaha!"
"..."
An Yi: "..."
An Yi looked away.
Outside the window, a small transport ship drifted off, leaving only a faint blue light that slowly faded against the pitch-black of space.
Cong Tianyue: "..."
The old lady looked at the group standing around awkwardly and ran her fingers through her hair.
They're not clicking?
Maybe she should've introduced someone else!
