Chapter 1.1. Land of minotaurs.

Chapter 1.1. Land of minotaurs.

The ship sailed into massive lake, its waters calm and reflective beneath overcast sky. For a week it cruised along tranquil shores – dense forests stretching to horizon on all sides! Passengers grew accustomed to monotonous rhythm of waves lapping hull.

But then, in distance ahead, wall of stone reared up from wilderness! Towering ramparts ringed whole town, rising high enough to scrape clouds! Spires and rooftops peeked above battlements like giants’ teeth.

As vessel drew nearer, details came into focus. Fortified gates yawned wide – allowing steady stream of traffic in and out. Merchant stalls lined quayside, hawking exotic wares from distant lands! The air hummed with cacophony of voices speaking myriad tongues.

Sails were furled, as ship glided to dock, passengers craning necks for glimpse behind walls! What mysteries lurked within this bastion carved from untamed wilderness? And how had such marvel risen in midst of nowhere?

– Welcome travelers, – a grizzled sailor called out, leaping nimbly ashore: – You’ve reached Hornun – jewel of Dark Continent!

He swept arm grandly toward gates. But something about his tone did not quite ring true. A hint of unease behind jovial mask? As if inviting newcomers into den of iniquity, rather than haven.

Still, tired adventurers could only wonder what fortunes and perils awaited within! With excited murmurings, they gathered gear and prepared to disembark – ready for anything, this strange new town had in store!

Among those disembarking, a diverse group caught attention immediately. Leading way was cloaked figure – face hidden behind unsettling skull mask! She moved with graceful purpose, robes swishing subtly in breeze.

Behind the female followed fallen angel, feathered wings drooping with fatigue. Yellow eyes darted warily – ever watchful for threats. At their side slithered snakeman scholar – scale-patterned robe straining over coiled muscles. He peered curiously, at bustling port town, forked tongue flicking nervously.

Minotaur brought up rear – bulk straining in leather harness as he ambled ashore. Axe head gleamed dully at hip, warning to would-be troublemakers. Despite gruff appearance though, gentle expression belied kind nature. And finally, young Tuatha Dé Danann warrior hurried along beside companions. Soft leather tunic fluttered around lithe form, revealing lithe gracefulness. Blue eyes shone brightly, with innocent curiosity about strange surroundings.

Together these unlikely allies strode confidently toward Hornun’s gates – each bearing weight of personal histories and motivations! Cloaked woman seemed to be leader, guiding her mercenary band purposefully onward, with decisive strides.

– What brings you fine folk to our humble hamlet? – gate guard queried suspiciously,
eyeing motley bunch with open distrust: – Best state business promptly.

The masked stranger bowed, voice muffled eerily by ghoulish facade.

– We are mercenaries. Traveling across continent. We are on our way to Gornagog, heard there might be a job for us.

– That is long way from here.

– Job takes us, were it takes us, – shrugged the female.

Guard looked at her men. Two of them had slave collars, fallen angel and snakeman. Without slave collar snakeman would have been killed or arrested, but, as a slave, he was allowed entrance. Guard checked their mercenary tags, but they were fine, and he nodded.

– Enter.

He turned towards next passenger, eyeing everyone with suspicion. Lilith entered the town. It was a long journey. Her mercenary band spend last year working in Tuatha Dé Danann town Taraka, where she freed her former slave minotaur Kragor. Taking a minotaur to Minotaur Kingdom, as a slave would be a gamble, but Kragor followed her like obedient dog, and she decided to remove his slave collar.

Lilith and her companions stepped through Hornun’s gates, entering bustling town square! Stone buildings loomed overhead – built in minotaur style, with rounded archways and sturdy buttresses. Carts laden with goods, wound their way between throngs of people, horns lowing as they jostled for space.

The air smelled strongly of earth and iron, hints of forge smoke mingling with exotic spices! Minotaurs dominated crowd – bull-headed giants towering over other races! They moved purposefully through streets, heavy hooves clopping rhythmically on cobblestones.

In plaza center, massive statue reared up – depicting mighty warrior brandishing axe aloft. It gleamed dully under overcast sky, a testament to Hornun’s martial prowess!

– Watch your step there! – a minotaur woman snapped gruffly, as she barreled past: – This ain’t no place for dainty feet!

Lilith kept her head low, mask shielding expression from prying eyes! Cian stayed close at heels while Kragor and Azael moved to flank – alert for trouble despite worn travel attire!

Sharr slithered alongside silently, forked tongue flicking, as he surveyed surroundings. Even under collar’s control, scholarly snakeman seemed fascinated by unfamiliar sights. They found their way deeper into town – narrow alleys branching off main thoroughfare like capillaries! Tallow candles flickered in shop windows, casting eerie shadows over wares within.

This was no place for weak-willed, Lilith sensed instantly. Hornun radiated grit and determination – a frontier outpost clinging desperately to civilization’s edge! Only strongest survived here.

The minotaurs dominated Hornun’s streets, their imposing forms casting long shadows across cobbled paths! Bull-headed giants moved around them – as they went about daily tasks. Their deep voices rumbled like distant thunder, blending into bustling town’s background noise.

– Hey there pretty lady! – a minotaur called out lewdly to passing human woman. She scowled and quickened pace – clearly used to such attention! Other races kept heads down, avoiding eye contact with hulking locals.

Few humans dotted crowd, mostly merchants haggling over wares or hard-faced mercenaries seeking fortune! Demons lurked in shadowy alcoves – glowing eyes watching passersby with predatory interest!

Cian’s Tuatha Dé Danann lineage drew curious stares, but no outright hostility. Slender elven forms were rare sight amid brawny minotaurs, but not uncommon.

– Get outta way, snake! – a gruff voice barked, as snakeman slave scurried to avoid collision! Sharr hissed indignantly, but slithered off – accustomed to such treatment even under collar’s control!

Snakemen could be seen cleaning streets, forcibly pressed into servitude by slave collars! Their scaled forms glistened with sweat under unrelenting sun, tongues flicking nervously.

Lilith kept mask firmly in place, sensing hostile glances from some minotaurs, but not outright challenge.

Lilith turned to Kragor, masked visage tilted questioningly.

– Know location of Mercenary guild? – her gruff voice carried a hint of command – used to giving orders without preamble!

The minotaur nodded solemnly, bulk shifting, as he pivoted on hoofed feet.

– I’ll find out, – he rumbled, setting off down bustling street! Lilith watched him go with satisfaction – trusting in her loyal companion’s ability to navigate this foreign town. Cian and Azael exchanged glances – used to such abrupt changes in plan from their leader!

– Stay close, – Lilith warned party, hands twitching toward concealed weapons: – And keep eyes peeled for trouble.

Sharr slithered alongside silently, forked tongue flicking at scents on breeze! The snakeman’s keen senses would prove invaluable if things turned sour.
