Chapter 114: Re: My Heart Beats For You

“Once your surgery is over, how about we try being together?”

“We’ll talk about it after the surgery succeeds.”

Jian Chenfeng had once been filled with hope, believing that the two of them might truly have a future together. Yet in the end, Yumo still chose to give his life for Jian Chenfeng’s younger sister.

Jian Xin received his heart, while Jian Chenfeng was left with nothing.

Life continued even after he lost that person, but Jian Chenfeng never learned how to smile again. He didn’t even want to see Jian Xin, because every time he looked at her, he was reminded that the heart beating inside her chest had once belonged to the man he loved.

But she was still his younger sister, and Jian Chenfeng would protect her for the rest of her life. It was just that after gaining a new lease on life, Jian Xin seemed to become increasingly willful. In the past, her health had forced her to spend most of her time recuperating at home. Now that she finally had a healthy body, she showed no appreciation for it, frequently going out to entertainment venues, associating with questionable people, squandering money without restraint, and behaving arrogantly and overbearingly. It was as though she had become a completely different person.

Jian Chenfeng had never known that his younger sister could be like this. Had she willingly given herself over to decadence, or had this simply been her true nature all along? At times, Jian Chenfeng couldn’t help feeling that Yumo’s sacrifice had been wasted. The woman he had given his life for felt not the slightest gratitude toward him and instead took her extravagant, shallow lifestyle entirely for granted.

Jian Chenfeng restricted her spending and sent her to school, but she always managed to cause one problem after another and refused to change no matter how many times she was reprimanded. In the end, even Jian Chenfeng gave up.

Two years after Yumo’s death, Jiang Donglin and Jian Xin got married.

After getting married, Jian Xin finally restrained herself somewhat. She opened a café purely as a pastime.

But after several years of marriage, Jian Xin and Jiang Donglin still had no children. Jian Chenfeng therefore adopted a child, named him Jian Simo, and decided to raise him as the future heir of the Jian family.

Only later did Jian Chenfeng learn that Jiang Donglin and Jian Xin had begun sleeping in separate rooms not long after their marriage. Their relationship was otherwise very good, but sexually, they simply couldn’t make it work. Jian Xin seemed extremely resistant to Jiang Donglin touching her and had even called it “disgusting.”

Once, while drunk, Jiang Donglin unintentionally said to Jian Chenfeng, “Could it be because Jian Xin received Yumo’s heart that she instinctively rejects me as his older brother?”

The moment Jian Chenfeng heard that, he punched him without another word.

By Jiang Donglin’s logic, was Jian Xin’s drastic change in personality also supposed to be because she had received Yumo’s heart? Yumo had been so cheerful, someone who loved life so deeply. Even if the transplant really could influence her, surely it should have been in a positive way.

Jian Chenfeng always felt that the Yumo he knew and the Yumo Jiang Donglin knew could not possibly have been the same person. They were clearly biological brothers, so how could their impressions of him differ so drastically? In Jiang Donglin’s eyes, his younger brother seemed completely worthless, a person made up of nothing but flaws. Whenever that happened, Jian Chenfeng found himself wishing Yumo had been his younger brother instead. If Yumo had belonged to his family, then even if Jian Chenfeng had to bear the stigma of incest, he would still have done everything in his power to cherish and love him.

Forget it. None of that mattered anymore.

Yumo was already dead. Every hope Jian Chenfeng had left was nothing more than a beautiful fantasy.

Ignoring his parents’ objections, Jian Chenfeng insisted on adopting a child—Jian Simo. He poured what little affection he had left into raising him.

Jian Simo did not disappoint him. At fifteen, he began taking part in company affairs, and by eighteen, he was already capable of handling matters independently. Jian Chenfeng had originally chosen to adopt him because his features bore a forty-to-fifty-percent resemblance to Yumo’s, but as Jian Simo grew older, he instead became more and more like Jian Chenfeng. Not in appearance, but in temperament and personality—the same cold, expressionless face that kept everyone a thousand miles away.

Perhaps Jian Chenfeng felt that Jian Simo had somehow grown in the wrong direction, because after turning forty-five, he was no longer particularly close to him. Outside of work, the two rarely interacted.

That year, Jian Xin successfully gave birth to twins through IVF. Jian Chenfeng’s parents immediately began devoting their attention to cultivating the two children. They had never particularly liked Jian Simo; no matter how outstanding he was, he still did not carry the Jian family’s blood.

Jian Simo assumed that he would inevitably have to step aside for Jian Xin’s children in the future, so he made no attempt to compete with them. He simply focused on his work, accumulated experience, and prepared himself to become independent when the time came.

What he never expected was that in the year his foster father died, the man who had always treated him so coldly named Jian Simo in his will without the slightest hesitation.

The moment Jian Chenfeng stopped breathing, a peaceful, liberated smile appeared on his face, and Jian Simo could no longer hold back his tears. In his memory, his foster father had never smiled. His life had always seemed so monotonous and empty, every day consumed by exhausting work. Jian Simo had thought his foster father simply didn’t know how to enjoy life. Only now did he realize that all these years, Jian Chenfeng had regarded being alive as nothing more than a responsibility he could not abandon.

His happiness no longer existed in the human world.
