Chapter 31: Direct and Abstract

In his previous life, Kaios wasn't someone with grand ideals, lofty ambitions, or a particularly strong drive to succeed. The reason he spent three years taking the postgraduate entrance exams was, to put it bluntly, just an excuse to keep getting living expenses from his dad.

Kaios grew up in a single-parent household. His mother passed away when he was very young. His father's business was doing quite well, providing a handsome income, so he started a new family when Kaios was in middle school.

His father and stepmother had four children in five years—including a pair of twins. After starting high school, Kaios basically lived in the school dormitories. Every time he went home, he felt a strong sense of being an outsider.

Gradually, even during school holidays or the Spring Festival, he would find excuses not to go back.

His father, however, understood him and promised that as long as he was still studying, he would continue to support him financially.
