Volume 4, Chapter 1-1 – Vivian, Aren’t You Playing Way Too Wild?

Mara Nightsong walked alone through the broad corridor, dressed in a tattered black cloak. Her hood was pulled low, concealing most of her face.

Faded murals had been carved into the stone pillars on either side.

Pale flames, ember-like eyes, the figure that had once made the entire Abyss tremble. Now, only blurred outlines remained, gradually peeling away under the erosion of time.

This was the Ashen Sanctuary.

Mara stopped in the central council chamber.

Dust covered the entire place. Not a single person was there.

The Ash Drinkers who had once struck terror into the entire Abyss had gathered here, held council, and received their missions.

Now, only dust remained.

After the Pale Lord fell, the Ash Drinkers had been hunted down over the long years. Some died, while others fled.

Those who survived took off their robes, concealed their names, and scattered into the dark alleys of Nightmare Street or hid away in desolate frontier city-states.

Few loyal retainers remained.

The path to kingship had grown distant and faint.

Although there were still some who tried to restore the Ash Drinkers to their former glory, without their old master, they had never been able to unite people’s hearts.

They were nothing more than loose sand, each fighting on their own. Some had even abandoned all thoughts of restoration and raised banners of their own.

But it was not as though absolutely no one remained here waiting.

“Long time no see, Mara.” Someone spoke from behind her. “I really didn’t expect this. After so many years, you’d actually come back here.”

Mara did not turn around.

“Colonel.” She said. “Long time no see.”

“I thought you’d gotten used to your peaceful life as Vice Principal at Lilith School.” The Colonel said with a hint of amusement. “I thought you’d never come back.”

“Colonel.” Mara said, “I have not forgotten my loyalty to our old master.”

“Hard to say.”

The Colonel sneered.

“Maybe this time, you just have nowhere else to go?” The Colonel paced around Mara. “I heard Gehenna already discovered your true identity. You lost your position as Vice Principal, and you’re even wanted throughout the Nexus Council’s territory.”

The Colonel patted the dust from Mara’s cloak.

“Losing everything doesn’t feel very good, does it?”

“It was merely a necessary price to pay.” Mara replied.

“A price?”

The Colonel tilted her head.

“I found our old master’s daughter.”

“The Pale Daughter.” Mara enunciated clearly. “Stella Valentine. She’s currently at Lilith School, under Gehenna’s protection.”

The Colonel said nothing.

She stood motionless, like a statue.

A long time passed before she finally spoke.

“After all these years…” The Colonel’s voice was slightly hoarse. “We finally found her?”

The Colonel closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

“Mara, is your information reliable?”

“It could not be more certain,” Mara said. “I had my doubts at first as well, but I verified her bloodline and her power step by step. Judging from the traits she has displayed… there can be absolutely no mistake.”

“Good… very good.” The Colonel narrowed her eyes slightly. “We’ve searched bitterly for so many years, and the single most important material has finally appeared.”

Mara froze for a moment.

“Material?” She looked at the Colonel. “The resurrection ritual for our old master… has everything already been prepared?”

Reconstructing the Pale Lord’s life was absolutely not something that could be accomplished by drawing a magic array and chanting a few spells.

It required all manner of rare materials that were exceptionally difficult to obtain.

“Powder from bowlstone sedimented in the River Styx, Thousand-Eyed Jade Branches from the Wailing Wasteland, fire rat pelts from the Scorching Sea, Five-Colored Dragon Jade from the deepest reaches of Dragonbone Land, Beian Stone from the Dome Sparrow…”

“Every single one of them is an absurdly difficult core material to obtain. At one point, I even suspected that blood demon bitch was screwing with me. But after all these years, I’ve gradually managed to collect almost all of them.” The Colonel said proudly. “At least all the effort I poured into this wasn’t wasted.”

“Of course, the most important thing is the remnants of my Lord.”

“The last remnants of our forces paid the price of hundreds upon hundreds of lives. With cooperation from both inside and outside, we successfully seized a portion of my Lord’s soul fragments back from the Holy See.”

The Colonel curled her fingers into a tight fist.

“Everything is ready.” The Colonel said. “We lack only the final material, a body capable of bearing this power, one that shares the same origin.”

“Now, at last, we have everything.”

“Will only a portion of the soul fragments really be enough?” Mara asked instinctively. “Won’t my Lord’s memories be incomplete?”

“Her memories won’t be complete,” the Colonel replied. “There will be many things she may forget, many people she may not recognize, and her power will also be vastly diminished, not even one ten-thousandth of what it was at her peak. But for us, that will already be enough.”

The Colonel loosened her fist.

“As long as there is no problem with the most important part, the body of the same origin, then the ritual will absolutely succeed. As long as the body possesses the purest bloodline, it can perfectly merge with the soul fragments and gradually awaken my Lord’s remaining instincts. Then, using that as our foundation, we can gather the other fragments and make my Lord whole once more.”

“Stella Valentine is our only choice.”

Mara nodded.

“That child called Stella.” The Colonel said. “As long as we bring her to the Ashen Sanctuary, as long as we make her step into the ritual we’ve prepared, as long as we use her body as the vessel…”

Mara frowned slightly.

“But Lilith School is Gehenna’s territory.” Mara said. “Stella is being watched extremely closely right now. Gehenna even left a tracking beacon on her face. Getting our hands on her and bringing her back to the Ashen Sanctuary will be extremely difficult.”

“As for how we’ll get our hands on Stella and bring her to the Ashen Sanctuary…” The Colonel turned around and looked at Mara. “I have my own methods.”

“What methods?”

“I can’t tell you yet. I’m still missing the final few materials needed to resurrect my Lord.” The Colonel shook her head. “But don’t worry. I’ll handle it. You only need to do one thing.”

“What?”

“Gather the Ash Drinkers.”

The Colonel stopped at the entrance to the council chamber.

“After all these years, some have scattered, some have gone into hiding, and some have even forgotten why we gathered together in the first place.” She said calmly. “Tell them that our old master’s daughter has been found. Tell them the bloodline resurrection ritual is about to begin.”

“Tell them…”

The Colonel strode forward.

“When that time comes, we will welcome the return of my Lord!”
