Chapter 110: Chapter 110: They Rely on Their Fertility
Sure enough, she had seen a hovercraft leave Boman Gate Island that morning, from the courtyard where the black-haired female was staying.
And now, that same hovercraft appeared in the sky above Boman Gate Island, drawing steadily closer, and she saw that too.
Feng Lian, who had been watching the whole time, turned her head to look at her friend, the female Hu Ya, and Feng Lun, who were in her courtyard picking out new dresses that had just been delivered. Her eyes shifted downward thoughtfully.
She looked up at her friend, who was praising the beauty of the new clothes, and interjected, "Some people wouldn’t even give these a second glance."
Hu Ya paused. "Who?"
Feng Lian gave a bitter smile and said, "Sigh. Yesterday, I went to see that new black-haired female to invite her over to have a dress made, but for some reason, she just threw me out."
As she spoke, she shot a quick, secretive glance at Feng Lun.
Feng Lun was intoxicated with her role as the female impersonating Feng Si. Even though she was just a low-level, Mid-level male beasts she never would have dared to dream of before now buzzed around her like bees to a flower, fawning over her incessantly.
’As long as her family doesn’t expose the ’Feng Si’ impersonation.’
And since she hadn’t formed a Contract with a male beast, ’low-level female’ was now her official identity.
Because of this, Feng Lun was all the more eager to please Feng Lian. Playing her part perfectly, she exclaimed in mock surprise, "It couldn’t be that she looks down on you for not having a powerful background, could it? That she scoffs at the fashion designer you found?"
Feng Lian forced a smile, looking as though she’d been hurt.
Hu Ya’s eyebrows knitted together.
She herself was a commoner from a remote city. Growing up, she had always been at the very bottom of the social ladder in the female circles, the one who was constantly mocked and bullied.
That period of humiliation only ended after she came of age and a blood test confirmed her fertility as Advanced. Suddenly, her life was turned completely upside down.
Before a female comes of age, her internal pheromones are unstable, making it impossible to determine her rank. As such, she was simply considered a rare female.
But things were different after coming of age.
The fertility revealed by the blood test after their pheromones stabilized was what created the class divide among females.
In Hu Ya’s view, this only reinforced her belief that they should be judged by their fertility, not their original family background.
Hu Ya was now a high-status female, true, but her former background was like a brand seared into her heart. Along with her deep-seated insecurity, it also made her despise any female who tried to use their family background to intimidate others in her presence.
Hu Ya shot up from the sofa. "I’d like to see just how a woman living at the very bottom of the island dares to be so arrogant."
Watching Hu Ya storm off, Feng Lian smiled inwardly, but on the outside, she put on a troubled expression and hurried after her.
The group took a hovercraft down the island, intercepting the returning hovercraft by the river at the island’s edge.
Hu Ya didn’t even intend to get out. She opened the window and barked arrogantly, "Hey! Are you blind? You’re in my way."
Seeing the two Advanced Females in the other vehicle, a terrified Bo Rongrong scrambled to open her door and get out, apologizing meekly, "I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry! I’ll move the vehicle right away."
Feng Lian didn’t see the black-haired female in the vehicle. She tugged on Hu Ya’s sleeve and shook her head.
She turned and sized up the person standing on the grass. The black-haired female had indeed gotten into this vehicle, and now Bo Rongrong was back.
’But she’s gone...’
Feng Lian asked in a curious tone, "Where did you just come from? You’re covered in sweat. The temperature at the edge of the island is much lower than up on the peak. You should wear more so you don’t get sick."
Receiving concern from someone here for the first time, Bo Rongrong was both surprised and flattered. "It’s nothing. I just got back from No. 1 Collection Area outside the city. It’s a little hot out there."
"You should hurry back, then. Remember to take a hot bath," Feng Lian said with a thoughtful smile.
She then closed the window, turned, and tugged on Hu Ya’s sleeve again, her expression full of worry.
"She went to No. 1 Collection Area. Maybe you shouldn’t go looking for her... After all, she looks down on people like us anyway..."
Hu Ya’s face burned as if she’d been slapped.
She felt that even though she was now a High-level Female, she still couldn’t escape the identity of her original family. No matter where she went, she was looked down upon by that group of well-born females.
’On what grounds?’
’Right now, she could easily form a Contract with seven or eight High-level male beasts, some of whom could even have backgrounds like the City Lord’s son!’
Feng Lian observed Hu Ya’s expression—eyes wide, teeth clenched. It was the furious look one gave to a hated enemy.
The corner of her mouth lifted in a silent smile.
’Killing with a borrowed knife.’
’Perfect.’
...
Outside the southern gate of Pantian City, the midday sun marked the hottest part of the day. There wasn’t a single soul in the collection area.
The hovercraft parking spot was at the edge of a deep mountain forest. Sparse trees stood like individual parking spaces, which also happened to form giant, sun-shading umbrellas.
Feng Si stood under a tree, raising a hand to her brow to shield her eyes as she gazed into the distance.
The scenery here was fairly uniform. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but towering, dense mountain forests surrounded by all sorts of natural vegetation.
Upon closer inspection, however, one could see signs of artificial maintenance, though it had clearly been done without much care.
For example, there were bare little paths worn through the grass, and in the valley between the mountains, patches of identical brownish-gold plants rippled in waves with the wind.
Feng Si was still too far away to make out what they were.
They looked a bit like crops, but they seemed to have been grown from seeds scattered haphazardly. The plants grew randomly, with green weeds mixed in among the gold.
They were all growing together in one area, sparse in some spots and crowded in others.
Feng Si put on her cloak and stepped out from under the shade of the tree.
f22 dutifully followed behind her, carrying the bamboo basket.
The heat radiating from the ground under the midday sun made her squint. She stood for a moment to adjust before heading purposefully toward the valley.
Those plants looked familiar, and she was intrigued. She picked up her pace, and after just a short while, she could feel the heat radiating from within her body.
The sun was truly scorching at this time of day. Just a few days ago, she was in the snow-swept Nantong City, and now she was in Pantian City, which felt like early summer.
After walking for only a short time, she was already starting to sweat under her two layers of clothing and cloak.
Feng Si immediately thought of Yun Duo, who was nestled in her breast pocket.
A wave of anxiety hit her. Feng Si quickly used both hands to lift her cloak, creating a small, open space between her chest and the fabric to let the air circulate so Yun Duo wouldn’t suffocate.
Yun Chi, however, didn’t feel hot at all.
He comfortably rolled his little body over, pressing his plump belly against the side of the pocket warmed by the sun. It was so warm and cozy, perfect for a nap!
Peeking carefully through a gap in her cloak, Feng Si saw that Yun Duo was sleeping so comfortably it looked as if he wanted to press his entire belly against the outer layer of the pocket.
Feng Si’s heart softened at the sight. She carefully held the cloak open and continued walking toward the valley.
