Chapter 128: Chapter 128: I Brought You Something Good
Out of interest in the local ingredients, Feng Si had inspected the storeroom every day since arriving in Pantian City, familiarizing herself with many new food items.
She easily found substitutes for turnips and long beans among them: pink Lotus Fruits and green Long Horned Beans. These could be staple dishes at Si Shi in Pantian City.
Inside Feng Si’s space were ten large vats of old pickling brine, which had been in continuous use ever since she first started making pickled cabbage. The long-settled brine was slightly cloudy, and its sour flavor was incredibly rich and mellow.
It was, however, a perfect match for pickling root vegetables.
Of course, the ingredients here all grew wild; they weren’t as succulent as modern produce grown from carefully selected seeds.
Feng Si selected some fresh Lotus Fruits and Long Horned Beans from the storeroom. After washing them and cutting them into large chunks, she spread them out on a mat woven from wheat straw to air-dry beneath the kitchen window.
After dinner, once the moisture on their skins had evaporated, she could gather them and put them directly into the pickling jars.
She hadn’t cut the pieces too large, and the temperature was quite high, so they would probably be infused with flavor and ready to eat in about three to five days.
During the few days she waited for the pickled cabbage to finish, Feng Si’s schedule was very simple. She spent practically every day in the wheat fields, personally collecting Dust Breath.
In just three short days, her space reached Level 99. While the average multiplier had been six-fold when she reached Level 90, her space had now expanded to roughly 600 square meters.
The three days of waiting passed by in a flash.
Early that morning, Feng Si didn’t head to the wheat fields as she usually did. Instead, having waited the minimum time necessary, she took out some of the pickled cabbage she had put in the jars a few days prior to taste-test it.
Due to the short pickling time, the sour flavor wasn’t very strong, but the texture was quite good. Making pickled cabbage with Lotus Fruits and Long Horned Beans was a success.
Feng Si felt that this was a viable path.
However, since the matter of the shop in Pantian City wasn’t settled yet, she planned to start by selling it online.
The sales channels were already in place.
She could add this new type of pickled cabbage to Xiao Si’s livestream. All the money earned would be her own, and she wouldn’t have to split half of it with Niu Ding anymore.
Next, while waiting for breakfast with Yun Duo, Feng Si browsed the Light Net for a custom-order shop. For once, she didn’t go out, instead planning to order ten thousand small, two-hundred-milliliter glass jars and some "Si Shi" brand stickers.
Then, she received a report from a sub-female servant. Lady Bo Rongrong was requesting to see her. Apparently, she had come looking for Feng Si several times in the past few days, but Feng Si had been out every time.
Feng Si looked up from the light screen after placing her order, considering whether or not to see her.
Yun Chi, who was coiled up on a placemat on the table, also turned his head, his big eyes staring at the sub-female who was speaking.
In three days, Yun Chi would be a full month old. According to the local infant care manual, he would be able to briefly transform into a human baby’s form after his first full month.
As a result, Yun Chi was starting to become interested in the language of adults. He opened and closed his mouth, making little hissing sounds as if imitating their speech, listening with great concentration.
Seeing the serious look on Yun Chi’s little face as he stared at the dining room door with his golden eyes, Feng Si had a thought. ’These past few days, Yun Chi has only been around male beasts and sub-females.’
’I’m the only female he knows, which is too few.’
’This Beastman World has three genders, so it would be good to let Yun Chi have more contact with other females.’ So she didn’t refuse the visitor. A moment later, the sub-female Maid returned, leading in Bo Rongrong, who was carrying a box.
Bo Rongrong had never imagined that Feng Si wouldn’t know she was a Special-level Female. Especially since they had spent time together before, she didn’t think Feng Si was the type to look down on another female because of her rank.
Now, seeing Feng Si, she could only think of one reason why Feng Si had been ignoring her these past few days.
She said with a hurt expression, "Are you still angry about what happened the other day? You’ve refused to see me for days. You’re the only person I know here, so please don’t ignore me."
’Her opening was so naively simple it left one speechless. It wasn’t that I was angry, I just don’t like having an incompetent teammate around. Besides, I really have been busy.’
Feng Si sighed internally. ’Bo Rongrong doesn’t have a bad heart,’ she thought. ’As long as I don’t involve her in what I’m doing from now on, another unintentional mistake like before won’t happen again.’
She raised her hand and cupped it over Yun Chi’s head. "Why don’t you sit down first? Have you eaten? My Yun Duo and I are about to have breakfast. Would you like to join us?"
Feng Si’s finger distracted Yun Chi, who had been tilting his head to listen to the adults talk. Unable to multitask, he wriggled his little body, trying his best to press his mother’s finger under his chubby belly, just like when his mother held him in her palm.
He let out a happy, hissing laugh. The black scales on his head glittered under the sunlight, reflecting fragments of light—the uniquely beautiful scales of a cold-blooded creature.
Bo Rongrong’s attention was immediately captivated. Looking at the little cub, she asked Feng Si, "Where did you get this cub to raise?"
Feng Si nodded without batting an eye. "Mhm, he’s my cub."
Just then, a sub-female brought in that day’s breakfast: a plate of fruit, a bowl of fish soup, a platter of wild greens, three plates of tender roasted meat, and a bottle of milk.
Feng Si had been busy these past few days. Other than Yun Duo’s daily supplemental meal, she hadn’t cooked for herself. The food was all meticulously prepared by the cook in the S2 courtyard.
The milk Yun Duo drank was a common continental type extracted from green fruit, and it always tasted the same. As for the food, Feng Si found the flavor acceptable. The meat was very tender, with a milky aroma and no off-putting taste; it could even be poured over the wild greens and eaten as a salad.
With one hand pinned under Yun Chi’s belly, Feng Si reached out with her other hand, picked up the milk bottle from the bed, tested the temperature, and, as usual, began to feed the little one.
Bo Rongrong pulled out the chair next to Feng Si and sat down. She glanced at the bland meal a Special Rank Female was eating, though she knew it was all precious food specially provided for females.
Besides, the amount of food was really quite small. Bo Rongrong lived next door, so of course she knew about the huge commotion from when Feng Si was sick and the shaman came to the island.
Bo Rongrong immediately thought of the food she had recently managed to get. She placed the wooden box she was holding on the table and said, "This is for you. It’s pickled cabbage and stewed meat, a recent discovery of mine. It’s perfect for someone like you who’s just recovering from an illness and has no appetite."
Feng Si, who was in the middle of feeding the baby, spared a glance. "Pickled cabbage and stewed meat?"
Bo Rongrong nodded confidently. "Yes! You might laugh, but this is the most delicious food I’ve ever had in my life. Someone gave me a jar, and I specially saved some for you. I had someone prepare it and bring it over this morning. Go on, eat it. You’ll definitely love it!"
Feng Si said, "...No, thank you."
Bo Rongrong assumed Feng Si had never tried something as wonderful as pickled cabbage and recommended it with all her might. "Don’t be put off by the color, the flavor is really amazing!"
Feng Si tilted her head and changed the subject. "You’ve been trying to find me every day for the past few days. Was there something you needed?"
"Oh, right!" Bo Rongrong exclaimed. "There’s a banquet at the Imperial Palace tomorrow night. It’s supposed to be the biggest one before the coming-of-age ceremony. They say the Beast King won’t be there, but other Special-level Male Beasts will be attending!"
