’I have to see what delicious food they’re making upstairs!’
’No matter what, even if I have to use force, I’m going to get some for my family.’
This was the pride of a member of Nantong City’s Third Patrol Squad.
’Just some sub-female, living upstairs for so long, and the food she makes every day smells heavenly. She doesn’t even know to bring some over to suck up to me.’
The Raccoon Cat secretly swallowed his saliva and promised his family, "You all wait here. I’ll go get that meat back." ’If she won’t give it to me, I’ll just have to take it myself.’
The Raccoon Cat stormed out of his apartment. In the hallway, he ran into a Gray Mouse Beastman from across the way. The Gray Mouse Beastman scurried over obsequiously. "Good morning, Lili Inspector."
The Raccoon Cat held his nose in the air, giving the Beastman who was trying to curry favor with him the cold shoulder.
"Where might you be heading?" The Gray Mouse Beastman wasn’t offended. He continued his fawning, pressing the elevator button for him before stepping aside with a sycophantic smile.
As the elevator ascended, the Raccoon Cat, wanting to show off his status and take the opportunity to put his neighbor in his place, said, "You know that new sub-female who moved in upstairs? I’m going to collect a protection fee from her."
The Gray Mouse Beastman’s eyes flickered.
’The squad leader isn’t trying to send me a message, is he?’
’But I already paid this month’s two hundred coins on time, didn’t I?’
"Speaking of which," the Raccoon Cat swallowed again, "that sub-female’s cooking is pretty good. I suppose I’ll reluctantly accept her food as payment."
Just then, the elevator slowly came to a stop at their floor.
DING.
The elevator door slid open. Standing inside was, of all people, Yang Wen. He stood with his hands behind his back, an impatient look on his face, with two sub-female servants behind him.
For a moment, the Raccoon Cat was stunned.
"What, are you two going up as well? To see Lady Feng Si?" Realizing the two outside were there to see Lady Feng Si, Yang Wen’s expression softened slightly, and a faint smile appeared on his face.
The Raccoon Cat had a terrible premonition. The hairs on his body stood on end. "No, no, no, I just pressed the wrong button. I’m going down."
’Steward Yang Wen, a steward from the City Lord Mansion! I’ve only ever seen him from a great distance!’
’Damn! Lady Feng Si.’
’No wonder that sub-female’s cooking smells so good, and though I live right downstairs, no one has ever dared to rob or bully her! I almost made a huge mistake!!’
The Gray Mouse Beastman, being very perceptive, lowered his head and scurried to the side. He knew a powerful figure was in the elevator and made it clear with his actions that he didn’t know the Raccoon Cat well.
Yang Wen’s face fell instantly. "Don’t press random buttons for no reason in the future. If you delay my business, you’re delaying the business the City Lord has entrusted me with! Watch your head."
The Raccoon Cat’s legs trembled. He forced himself not to flee and nodded repeatedly in apology. "Thank you for the warning, Steward. I apologize for interrupting your work. Please, take care."
The vicious idea he had just cooked up was extinguished. The Raccoon Cat watched the elevator door close again, feeling only how lucky he was to be alive.
If Yang Wen hadn’t appeared before he could make that catastrophic mistake, his head really would have been gone!
「Upstairs.」
A meat dish, a vegetable dish, a bowl of hot yellow millet rice, and a glass of water were arranged on the kitchen counter. Feng Si had made herself a nutritionally balanced breakfast.
She took a cloth and first wiped down the stove and the prep counter.
Only then did she sit on a high stool. With her mind on the tasks ahead, she ate quickly, but not as quickly as the even more anxious Yang Wen could arrive.
The moment Yang Wen received Feng Si’s communicator message, he rushed over without even stopping for breakfast.
He walked to the door, straightened his clothes, and then signaled the sub-female servant behind him. Following Lady Feng Si’s instructions, the servant knocked very, very gently on the door.
KNOCK, KNOCK.
The third knock of the day sounded. Feng Si put down her nearly empty bowl and chopsticks and got up to open the door.
The door was pulled open, revealing a floor bathed in warm white light.
A look of joy on his face, Yang Wen grinned from ear to ear and lifted his foot to enter the room. "Lady Feng Si, I came as soon as I received your message, braving the heavy rain."
Feng Si held out a hand to block the doorway. "We’ll talk in the hallway."
Yang Wen: "..."
’I knew it. I don’t have the privilege of discussing matters inside her room!’
「Five minutes later.」
Yang Wen sat on a high stool near the elevator, holding a cup of warm water. He had already soothed his shattered heart. ’After all, I’m getting the same treatment as the City Lord, aren’t I?’
"The City Lord said before that if I needed anything, I just had to order you to do it, correct?" Feng Si said, her back to her doorway.
Yang Wen nodded.
"Lady Feng Si, the City Lord has been gone for six days now, and the Beast King’s coronation is only twenty-one days away! Although our Green Potato and pickled cabbage are selling like crazy in Nantong City, they have no name recognition anywhere else!"
At this thought, Yang Wen grew so anxious he was practically bouncing in his seat, like his butt was on fire. Lady Feng Si had suddenly vanished for the past six days, and he couldn’t find her anywhere. He had even thought she’d run away!
’Thank goodness she came back today. What would I have done otherwise? From the way the City Lord put it, my job here is to help Feng Si, but also to keep an eye on this sub-female.’
Yang Wen’s expression was as complicated as if he were constipated. He kept shifting in his seat, standing up and sitting back down, as he watched Feng Si a few meters away.
"I know," Feng Si said, gesturing for him to calm down. "I called you here to solve this very problem."
"Do you have a good plan?" Yang Wen, who had just sat down, popped back up again. He couldn’t help but lean towards Feng Si, afraid he would miss a single word.
"The communicators purchased in Nantong City can only connect to the local city network. What if I want my communicator to connect to the entire continental network, like it did when the Beast King passed away? How would I go about that?" Feng Si asked unhurriedly.
Yang Wen replied, "Connecting to the continental network is both simple and difficult. Can you first tell me why you want to connect to the whole network?"
Feng Si didn’t answer, asking instead, "What’s the difficult part?"
Yang Wen said, "Why don’t you tell me first what you need a continental connection for, my lady? If you tell me your plan, I can serve you better."
Feng Si looked at Yang Wen with a half-smile. "This money-making plan I came up with through my own abilities is worth well over four hundred million. You want me to just give it to you for free right now?"
Her relationship with the City Lord was one where he held absolute power. It was only because she possessed culinary skills unparalleled in the entire Beastman World that they could maintain the delicate peace of being "collaborators," at least on the surface.
’There are some things I have to guard against. If I were to lay out all my plans in detail before they’ve even come to fruition, with no sense of caution, I’d be letting the City Lord know that anyone could potentially replace me.’
’In that case, I might be the one who gets kicked out early.’
’After all, the hearts of men are hard to fathom, and the hearts of beasts are even harder.’
"I am the founder of Si Shi. You are just a subordinate who follows my orders. When I tell you to do something, you do it. You shouldn’t be prying into my plans, understand?"
