Chapter 86: Chapter 86: I Have a Very Bad Feeling

Niu Wei asked respectfully, "Excuse me, are you Feng Yace? I’ve already prepared the paperwork for your cub’s Identity Card. Please come with me. We need to record your cub’s iris pattern."

’What about the full-body holographic photo, fingerprints, Sacrificial birth certificate, blood sample, and the parents’ Identity Cards? How could it be as simple as just an iris scan?’

"Heh, sorry to trouble you." More and more eyes were falling on her, so Feng Si quickly went along with it, saying, "Let’s go over now, then."

Mao Qiu looked calm, but she was panicking inside. Standing behind Feng Si, she shrank back.

’She knew Feng Si’s relationship with the City Lord was far from ordinary, but seeing these important people treat her so kindly with her own eyes filled her with an indescribable excitement.’

Feng Si didn’t want to attract attention, so she followed Niu Wei toward the back office, walking from the corner by the entrance down the aisle toward the service counters.

Along the way, everyone was incredibly surprised. But as Feng Si’s group passed, they immediately and carefully made way for them, watching the black-haired sub-female being escorted through the middle and whispering among themselves.

"That black-haired sub-female, is she the one who invented pickled cabbage?"

As soon as these words were spoken, everyone’s gaze toward Feng Si held a trace of reverence. Someone in the crowd said excitedly,

"She’s amazing! So it really is her!"

"I never understood why the City Lord of Nantong City treated her so specially, but now I get it. I wish I could just camp out in Xiao Si’s livestream channel 24/7!"

A Beastman in the crowd said with a grim face, "What’s so great about her? She’s just a sub-female."

"Are you kidding? Food in the Southern Wilderness has been bland for thousands of years. It’s just been roasted meat and boiled meat, the same thing every meal. For most of us, nutrient packs even dominate our tables," a sub-female holding a cub nearby retorted.

Food has always been about energy first. Since no one had ever eaten anything delicious, everyone was used to it.

The sub-female’s eyes sparkled as she watched Feng Si’s retreating back. "Only now do I realize that food is also about color, aroma, and flavor. In Xiao Si’s cooking streams these past few days, she’s used just pickled cabbage to make something different every night. It’s simply divine!"

"Oh my god, she’s truly the pride of all sub-females!"

Many sub-females were very fond of Feng Si. She taught everyone how to cook without asking for anything in return. Even if they couldn’t buy pickled cabbage, just by following her cooking methods, their food at home had become much more delicious.

Feng Si followed Niu Wei into the office. He led her to a sofa in the lounge area to sit down, and Mao Qiu sat down, sticking close beside her.

Just then, a sub-female brought over several steaming, seared meat cutlets and placed them on the table.

Niu Wei made polite conversation, "We don’t have much in the way of fine food here. Please forgive our simple hospitality."

That’s right—serving meat was how they treated guests here, and it was a courtesy reserved only for the most honored visitors. Mao Qiu’s eyes lit up.

"Thank you. How will you take the cub’s iris scan?" Feng Si asked, placing a protective hand over the front of the infant carrier.

Niu Wei’s eyes shifted as he saw Feng Si’s nervous expression. ’The City Lord himself put in a word for her. Of course, she deserves special treatment.’

He asked Feng Si to wait there for a moment, then quickly turned to instruct a subordinate to have someone from the Collection Department come over, saving Feng Si the trouble of running around with the cub.

The Household Registration Officer went aside to make the arrangements. Feng Si’s attention was on Yun Duo in her arms, while Mao Qiu’s was fixed on the meat cutlets on the table. For a moment, the sofa area fell silent.

Yang Wen, sitting opposite them, couldn’t stand the silence. His gaze fell on the light-colored swaddling on Feng Si’s chest, and he couldn’t help but ask, "Ma’am, is that your cub?"

Feng Si nodded, an irrepressible smile gracing her lips.

She tenderly lifted a corner of the swaddling and pulled open the soft, rabbit-fur pouch.

Inside, Yun Duo was wrapped in layer upon layer of clothing, a little bear hat on his head. Only a pair of large, golden eyes were visible as he lay in the soft bundle.

Seeing his mother, Yun Chi’s eyes brightened. He turned his head, and upon seeing the Beastman opposite him for the first time, his eyes widened in curiosity as he stared.

Yang Wen looked down and met Yun Chi’s gaze.

He was smart enough not to ask about the cub’s origins. Besides, he could guess.

When the weather turned cold, many families who struggled to even support themselves would abandon their unhealthy cubs at the Empire’s Orphanage.

’Feng Si’s drab-looking, skinny little Black Snake cub was probably from one of those places.’

Yang Wen smiled and praised, "The cub looks so spirited. I didn’t expect that on top of being a great cook, you’re also a natural at raising cubs, Ma’am."

Niu Wei, looking thoroughly convinced, came over and sat next to Yang Wen. He copied Yang Wen’s form of address and asked, "Ma’am, what name do you plan to give him? And what date of birth would you like to record?"

Yun Chi glanced at the expressions on the two big guys opposite him, then lost interest and turned his head away. He was now looking at Feng Si with his golden eyes, trying to act cute and coax his mother into taking him out of the carrier. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

Feng Si gently stroked Yun Chi in response. Her face was full of doting affection as she said softly, "His name is Yun Chi. He hatched from his shell on the tenth day of the first month of the cold season..."

BEEP—

A cold, electronic tone sounded from Niu Wei’s wrist, cutting Feng Si off.

Niu Wei gave Feng Si an apologetic smile and answered the call. "What?! ...Yes, yes. Alright, I understand."

After quickly ending the communication, he said, his face pale with shock,

"Heavens, Marshal Xi of the Second Legion is coming to Nantong City! The City Lord just instructed me to cooperate with the Sacrificial Hall and follow the Marshal’s orders."

The gentle smile on Feng Si’s face vanished instantly.

"What does..." A bad feeling welled up inside Feng Si, and she quickly pressed, "Cooperate with the Sacrificial Hall? Did the City Lord say what for?"

Yang Wen, who was standing nearby, didn’t think it was something that needed to be kept secret. Besides, Feng Si was considered one of the City Lord’s people, and she would find out sooner or later anyway.

He exchanged a look with Niu Wei and said, "It’s nothing major. Marshal Xi just wants all the Beastmen in the city to have their bloodline levels re-tested. You don’t need to worry."

—A bloodline test!

After catching that crucial piece of information in Yang Wen’s words, Feng Si’s heart began to pound even harder.

"Oh..."

She forced a stiff smile and asked, "Why the sudden re-test, out of the blue?"

Niu Wei shook his head and mused, "How could we possibly guess the intentions of someone of his rank?"

’This was the first time he’d ever had contact with a person of that echelon, too.’

"The Admiral’s arrival time is unknown. I need to hurry over to the Sacrificial Hall to find the Priest and make preparations in advance."

Niu Wei turned to Feng Si and, without a moment’s hesitation, immediately continued,

"I’ve already made arrangements for your matter. After the cub’s iris scan is recorded and his information is registered, I’ll have someone deliver the Identity Card to your home tomorrow."

With that, Niu Wei frantically led his team out the door.
