"What!" Yang Wen was so frightened he lost his balance and fell right off his stool. The sharp pain in his spine was nothing compared to the shock coursing through him.
"How can this be? Our... our Beast King is the Second Young Master! With him in charge, how would the Northern Wilderness dare..." Yang Wen scrambled up from the ground.
As expected of a member of the Mountain Goat Clan who could become the top Steward of the City Lord Mansion, his mind worked faster than other Beastmen:
’Could it be! Marshal Xi came to Nantong City at this time, ostensibly to have all the city’s Beastmen tested, but secretly, he’d already received news from the Beihuang Empire and was ordered to bring his army to Nantong City.’
’This time, Nantong City was to be the battlefield against the Beihuang Empire!’
「Half an hour later.」
Yang Wen was silent for a long time before his usual fawning smile appeared. "So... you wish to enter Nantong City to rest for the day?"
It was a small but elite detachment of Beastmen from the Northern Wilderness. They looked like victors hand-picked by the Death God Beast itself from the crucible of mortal combat.
They radiated a baleful aura. As they stood before the city gates, they made Nantong City’s proud, towering, million-volt walls seem utterly useless, sending a chill down to the very bone.
"Well..."
’The City Lord isn’t here, I can’t make this decision...’
Ignoring the resistance on Yang Wen’s face, Shi Li turned to the warriors behind him and ordered, "Prepare to enter the city. Don’t keep the Young Master waiting."
Yang Wen’s face went ashen.
Faced with such overwhelming power, the ten thousand warriors from the Bull and Sheep Clans left in Nantong City would be nothing more than cannon fodder. They wouldn’t even last until Marshal Xi arrived.
Shi Li had only bothered to inform Nantong City’s person-in-charge as a courtesy to the Southern Wilderness Beast King. Having said his piece, he turned and left the pack of Nantong City weaklings behind.
The Northern Wilderness army swaggered into the city as if they owned the place. The occupant of the silver castle they guarded in their center remained unseen.
"..." Yang Wen gritted his teeth and stepped aside. Swallowing his anger, he forced a smile. "The embassy in Nantong City is cleaned regularly. Please, follow me."
Shi Li and his troops took control of the city gate, forcing the Southern Wilderness warriors on duty to fall back.
Upon hearing Yang Wen, he shot him a sharp glance and gave a slight nod. "Go. Lead the way."
The warriors of Nantong City were furious but dared not speak. They glared at the arrogant Beihuang Warriors, their hearts filled with resentful thoughts.
’This is outrageous! You lot from the Northern Wilderness were defeated by our Beast King before! Just you wait until Marshal Xi arrives. We’ll see how arrogant you are then!’
Yang Wen, of course, felt the same. ’I just have to endure,’ he thought. ’Endure until the Admiral arrives to put them in their place!’
’Oh, Admiral! Please hurry! Nantong City needs reinforcements!’
...
「The next morning.」
As was her daily routine, Mao Qiu first went to the East District to deliver some grilled meat for Mao Yang before setting up her stall.
Mao Yang had once helped Feng Si by taking her to the City Lord Mansion. As a thank you, Feng Si had been setting aside food for her. But with the recent cold spell, Mao Yang couldn’t be bothered to send someone to the stall to pick it up. Instead, she gave Mao Qiu five hundred coins to deliver it for her.
Eager to save up coins to pair with a powerful male beast, Mao Qiu had agreed without hesitation.
She drove her small cart into the North District and saw from a distance that the shopping center’s main entrance was smashed in. Shattered glass littered the ground, and the building was surrounded by a detachment of unfamiliar warriors in brown uniforms.
The army was acting with impunity, not only surrounding the entire shopping center but also blocking off all traffic on the street.
Mao Qiu, who was in a hurry and driving at top speed, was caught completely off guard when they stopped her. She stared dumbfounded at the two grim-faced Beastmen standing beside her cart.
The Beastmen assigned to block the street were from the Giant Hyena Clan. To them, there was nothing wrong with their actions. In fact, if it weren’t for the emergence of Beast King Chi Jie in the Southern Wilderness, pillaging would be second nature to them.
Suppressing their natural instinct to plunder, they were following Lieutenant General Shi Li’s orders: they had to clear out every last bit of food from Si Shi, down to the last stalk of pickled cabbage.
Of course, since they were taking food from a closed shop, they did leave some Gold behind.
Towards the Southern Wilderness Beastmen they stopped, however, their tempers were much shorter.
A Beastman from the Giant Hyena Clan viciously smashed the cart’s window. He shot a sideways glance at the Cat Clan sub-female inside and growled:
"Hey, this area is off-limits. You..." He was about to tell her to get lost.
The words died in his throat. Through the window he’d just shattered, he caught a whiff of a meaty aroma unlike anything he had ever smelled before.
And so, the craving for food overwhelmed his fear of the Southern Wilderness Beast King. Chi Jie wasn’t here, after all. In that instant, his plundering instincts awakened, and he simply abducted both the cart and the sub-female, Mao Qiu, taking them back to their encampment.
Such a huge commotion at the only shopping center in the North District...
When Yang Wen received the terrible news early that morning, his face, which already seemed to have aged years overnight, crumpled like a bitter melon.
His son, Yang Jian, was beside him, roaring impotently, "They’ve gone too far! To actually loot everything from Si Shi! What are we going to tell the City Lord!"
Yang Wen was so miserable he’d become numb. "With the Gold, what else? Didn’t they leave Gold in the shop?"
"It was just a palm-sized piece!"
Yang Jian choked. "Father, aren’t you angry?"
"Angry? Of course, I’m angry," Yang Wen sneered. "But what damn good does being angry do? Do you know who he is? He is the Young Master of the Northern Wilderness! If I throw your lives at them, it will only serve as their entertainment."
Silence fell over the room. A suffocating atmosphere descended, like an endless winter storm that had shattered everyone’s spine, leaving the Beastmen unable to even raise their heads.
After a long moment, a quiet sob broke the silence. "They looted Si Shi, and now they’re after the pickled cabbage in the warehouse. We’re dead men when the City Lord gets back."
"Then we’ll all die together." Yang Wen had already resigned himself to death, but then a thought struck him. ’What can control a male beast... besides someone stronger than them, there’s one other thing!’
’A female!’
Without a moment to lose, Yang Wen contacted the only available female in Nantong City. "I’m not asking you to stop them yourself. I’m just hoping you can make an appearance and convince the Young Master of the Northern Wilderness to put an end to this farce."
Mao Yang was about to refuse, but then she suddenly thought of Feng Si. ’Feng Si is just a sub-female, but because of my introduction, she became an equal partner to the City Lord himself. And how did she do it? By being bold!’
’This is an opportunity I can’t miss. If I take a gamble... a Special-level Male Beast might not just be a dream!’ And so, Mao Yang readily agreed.
...
Having figured out the consequences of her identity being exposed last night, Feng Si got up this morning and began packing, stuffing her belongings into her storage space.
First, she pushed the shelves inside her storage space over, clearing one side for Yun Chi’s things.
She put in a whole basket of green fruit, followed by his little bed, bedding, clothes, and other necessities. She even prepared a set of the small stove she used for her livestreams.
Yun Chi watched for a long while as the items near Feng Si vanished one by one. Then, with a huff and a puff, he cupped a few of the round balls Feng Si had made for him in his paws and slid over to her.
