Skinwalker Belle – Chapter 13 – The Evolution of Zombies
Skinwalker Belle – Chapter 13 – The Evolution of Zombies
Roars rose and fell one after another outside the window.
They were more than three times as frequent as during the day.
Lin Fan lay in bed, listening to the unsettling sounds as memories from her past life flooded back like a tide.
Zombies became more dangerous at night.
During the day, you could still rely on speed to shake them off, but the night was completely different.
The virus’s activity would multiply in the darkness, giving them the speed of professional athletes.
What was even more terrifying was their sense of smell.
At night, zombies could smell the scent of humans from dozens of meters away.
“Damn it.”
Lin Fan shot up from the bed.
She had actually overlooked this fatal detail!
She had to deal with the scent problem immediately.
Lin Fan silently walked out of the bedroom. In the living room, Zhou Ming was sound asleep.
She tiptoed toward the pile of supplies, rummaging for the medical alcohol spray she had scavenged from the pharmacy.
Found it.
Two boxes of 75% concentration medical alcohol.
Lin Fan gripped the spray bottle and began to meticulously spray every door and window crack in the room.
The pungent smell of alcohol instantly filled the air.
This would effectively mask the human scent, at least preventing the zombies wandering outside from detecting that there were living people here.
The smell of alcohol woke Zhou Ming, who groggily opened his eyes.
“Ruyan? What are you doing?”
“Disinfecting.”
Lin Fan continued spraying without turning her head.

“The monsters outside are more dangerous at night. We have to cover our scent.”
Zhou Ming was instantly wide awake and wanted to get up to help.
“No need.”
Lin Fan stopped him.
“You keep resting. I can handle it.”
Her movements were swift, not missing a single corner.
She sprayed even more densely around the door and windows in particular.
Only after finishing all this did Lin Fan feel a little more at ease.
Returning to the bedroom, she lay down again but could no longer fall asleep.
The roars outside the window were intermittent, like the whispers of a demon.
She had to remain vigilant at all times.
Any bit of negligence could lead to them becoming food for those monsters.
——
The sky was just beginning to brighten.
Lin Fan opened her eyes at the first light. The intermittent disturbances of the previous night meant she hadn’t truly rested well.
But her mental state was still decent.
In the apocalypse, quality sleep was a luxury to begin with.
She got up and walked to the wardrobe, taking out the set of clothes from the first day, which had been washed and dried.
Brown yoga pants, a sports bra, with a quick-drying shirt over it.
It was the perfect combination, clinging to her figure without hindering her movement.
Lin Fan took a new pair of thick sports socks from a drawer.
Pure white, cotton blend, with good sweat absorption and cushioning.

She pulled the socks up high, covering the cuffs of her yoga pants.
As Lin Fan walked toward the bathroom, her gaze swept over the sink.
The clothes she had forgotten on the sink last night were now carefully washed and neatly hung to dry on the side.
Lin Fan smiled to herself.
Zhou Ming really hadn’t disappointed her.
As she was washing up, rustling sounds came from the living room.
Zhou Ming was awake too.
Lin Fan deliberately slowed her movements. By the time Zhou Ming walked over, she had just “discovered” the clean clothes.
“Huh?”
She put on a surprised expression and turned to look at Zhou Ming, who had just appeared at the bathroom door.
Zhou Ming’s face instantly turned beet red.
“Uh… I saw them yesterday, so I thought… I’d wash them along with mine. I didn’t… I didn’t mean anything else.”
Lin Fan was inwardly amused by his clumsy lie.
But her face showed a touched expression.
“Ming-ge, you’re so thoughtful.”
Her voice carried a gentle gratitude.
“How could I let you do such a small thing? How embarrassing.”
Her words made Zhou Ming’s heart bloom with joy, and the awkwardness on his face gradually faded.
“It’s what I should do, what I should do.”
Lin Fan nodded in satisfaction and continued to wash up.
This moderate approach could both instill a stronger protective desire in Zhou Ming and prevent him from losing his reason.
At this stage, it was the most perfect balance.

After getting fully armed, the two stood before the door for a final check.
Zhou Ming had the pot lid shield wrapped around his left hand and held the long-handled axe in his right.
His backpack was filled with Molotov cocktails and supplies.
Lin Fan carried another large backpack and gripped the familiar spear tightly with both hands.
“Remember, follow my command for everything.”
Lin Fan’s voice was very low but full of authority.
“Protect yourself first if we run into danger. Don’t be impulsive.”
Zhou Ming nodded heavily.
Lin Fan slowly opened the door and peeked out to observe the corridor.
A thick, metallic smell of blood assaulted her nostrils.
It was more pungent and nauseating than yesterday.
Evidently, another resident had met a grim fate last night.
The two silently exited the room, and Lin Fan locked the door behind them with her key.
This was their current safe house; they absolutely couldn’t let anyone else discover it.
Just as they reached the sixth-floor stairwell, a series of hurried footsteps came from below.
Something was wrong.
The footsteps were too fast and completely erratic.
It was a zombie!
Lin Fan immediately raised her hand, signaling Zhou Ming to stop.
The footsteps grew closer, accompanied by a low growl.
A male zombie in a dress shirt appeared at the turn in the stairs.
It was a resident from the fifth floor; Lin Fan recognized him.

But at this moment, the man was completely disfigured.
His pale skin was covered with black blood vessels, his eyes were completely white, and fresh bloodstains hung from the corners of his mouth.
What was more terrifying was his speed.
He was at least twice as fast as Mrs. Zhang, whom they had encountered on the first day!
The zombie spotted them and immediately let out a sharp shriek, charging up at an astonishing speed.
“Ming-ge!”
Zhou Ming reacted extremely quickly, instantly rushing in front of Lin Fan.
He held up the pot lid shield steadily, blocking the zombie’s first attack.
Clang!
The sound of the impact echoed in the stairwell.
The zombie’s claws left shallow scratches on the metal shield.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Zhou Ming swung his axe.
The axe blade accurately struck the zombie’s temple, ending the fight in an instant.
Black blood splattered on the floor.
Lin Fan nodded to herself.
Zhou Ming’s combat reflexes were indeed good; he could step up at critical moments.
This level of loyalty could still be trusted for now.
But the speed and strength displayed by the zombie just now made her feel a trace of unease.
The virus was evolving.
And faster than in her past life.
This meant the world outside was becoming more dangerous at a rate that surpassed imagination.
