Skinwalker Belle – Chapter 154 – Investigating the Rift

Lin Fan lay on the wooden bed in the inn, one leg crossed over the other. Her long, dark green hair was splayed across the pillow.

She lifted a foot clad in nude pantyhose and idly picked at her toes with her fingers.

“This damn bed is hard as a rock…”

Lin Fan took a women’s cigarette from her Storage Space. A small flame flickered to life at her fingertip, and she gently lit it.

She took a deep drag.

The long-missed nicotine flooded her lungs. She narrowed her golden, vertical pupils and exhaled a long plume of smoke.

“This stuff is still the best.”

This was from Lei Li’s stash. After the fusion, she had inherited the dependency on nicotine as well.

However, with his current physical constitution, he wouldn’t get addicted at all; he just had one occasionally to relax.

Knock, knock, knock.

A knock sounded at the door.

“Sister Ning Shuang, I’m back,” Su Xiaoxiao’s voice came from outside.

Lin Fan flicked her ash. “Come in.”

Su Xiaoxiao pushed the door open and entered, her fox ears perked up in excitement.

“Sister Ning Shuang, I’ve bought all the fox-kin sisters from the Slave Market. There are twenty in total. Sister Su Yue has already taken them back to the tavern to get them settled.”

Lin Fan nodded. “Thank you for your hard work.”

She sat up and stubbed out the cigarette.

A thought suddenly flashed through her mind.

Chu Chen had said that the captain of Magic City’s First Division, Lu Yuan, had lost contact after leading his team into the Rift.

The Rift connected to the Dragon Spirit Continent.

Then Lu Yuan and the others must also be on this continent, right?

Could some of them be… near Azurewood City?

A glint appeared in Lin Fan’s eyes.

If she could find Lu Yuan, she could bring them directly back to Blue Star the next time the Rift opened.

That way, she wouldn’t have to stay on guard in Magic City all the time.

“Xiaoxiao.” Lin Fan stood up and walked to the window. “Go inform Su Yue. Have the sisters at the tavern keep an eye out for something.”

“What is it?”

“Have they seen… any humans without any racial features?” Lin Fan turned her head to look at Su Xiaoxiao. “For example, no beast ears, no tail, no dragon horns, and no scales. Just… pure humans.”

Su Xiaoxiao paused for a moment. “Humans without any racial features?”

“That’s right,” Lin Fan nodded. “If they find any, have them notify me immediately.”

“Okay, Sister Ning Shuang!” Su Xiaoxiao nodded emphatically and used the fox clan’s secret technique to send a remote message directly to Su Yue.

Standing by the window, Lin Fan marveled that this ability of the fox clan was truly a god-tier talent for intelligence work.

She looked out the window at the massive Rift in the center of the city that pierced through the heavens.

There were still more than twenty days until the Rift opened.

There was still enough time.

She decided to go to the Rift and see it for herself.

Half an hour later.

Lin Fan, with Su Xiaoxiao in tow, arrived at the restricted area of the Rift in the center of Azurewood City.

The Rift was surrounded by a circle of tall stone walls, with several tiger-kin guards standing outside.

Upon seeing the dragon horns on Lin Fan’s head, the guards immediately and respectfully made way.

“My lady of the Dragon Clan, please.”

Lin Fan nodded and walked into the restricted area in her cloth shoes.

Su Xiaoxiao followed closely behind her, her fox ears pricked up alertly.

Passing through the stone wall, the view opened up before them.

A Rift was suspended in mid-air.

The Rift was about two hundred meters high and less than a hundred meters wide, its edges glowing with a faint purplish-red light.

At this moment, the Rift had not yet opened and was sealed by a semi-transparent membrane.

Mysterious patterns flowed across the membrane’s surface, emitting faint energy fluctuations.

Lin Fan narrowed her eyes and released her Mental Strength to investigate it carefully.

This Rift was much smaller than the one in Magic City.

The Magic City Rift was over a thousand meters high and several hundred meters wide.

This one in Azurewood City was only a third of the size of the Magic City Rift.

“No wonder Hu Lie said they only send twenty thousand Mutated Beasts below Level 3 and a few Level 4s each time just for show…” Lin Fan murmured to herself.

The size of a Rift determined the number and maximum level of creatures that could pass through it.

The pressure on the defending forces on the other side of this Rift shouldn’t be very high.

Lin Fan continued to probe the membrane with her Mental Strength.

The energy intensity of the membrane was very high.

Moreover, the patterns on the membrane seemed to be some kind of sealing formation.

Lin Fan frowned, thinking of a key problem.

The massive Rift in Magic City could at most allow a Level 6 Demonic Beast to pass through. If this small Rift couldn’t even allow a Level 6 through, how was she supposed to get to the other side?

Just then.

A hearty voice came from behind her.

“Is the lady of the Dragon Clan interested in the Rift?”

Lin Fan turned around.

Hu Lie was striding over, followed by Hu Ben and several personal guards.

Today, he wore a suit of black beast-hide armor, his tiger tail swaying casually, and a warm smile on his face.

“City Lord Hu Lie.” Lin Fan gave a slight nod.

Hu Lie walked to her side, his gaze sweeping over her.

Today, Lin Fan was wearing a black and gold combat top and a horse-face skirt, with embroidered cloth shoes and nude pantyhose on her feet.

Although not as stunning as last night’s cheongsam, she was still a sight one couldn’t look away from.

Especially those long, slender legs wrapped in nude pantyhose.

Hu Lie’s throat bobbed, and he forced himself to look away.

“Why didn’t Miss Ning Shuang inform me in advance that you were coming to inspect the Rift?” he said with a laugh. “I could have arranged for someone to accompany you.”

Lin Fan said coolly, “I was just taking a casual look. I didn’t want to trouble the City Lord.”

“No trouble, no trouble at all,” Hu Lie waved his hand and walked to the front of the Rift. “I’ve been guarding this Rift for a year.”

He looked up at the Rift, a hint of emotion in his tone.

“A year ago, the ancestor of the Pureblood Dragon Clan came here, created such a large Spatial Rift with a wave of his hand, and ordered me to arrange for soldiers to attack the world on the other side after it opens each month.”

He paused, a mocking smile touching the corner of his lips.

“After that, he never came to Azurewood City again. He just teleports a batch of Artificial Demons over when the time comes.”

Lin Fan raised an eyebrow. “The City Lord seems to have… some opinions about the Pureblood Dragon Clan?”

Hu Lie was taken aback, then burst out laughing.

“Miss Ning Shuang must be joking. I, Hu Lie, have always been loyal to the great Pureblood Dragon Clan.”

As he spoke, however, his eyes flickered.

Lin Fan noticed.

She didn’t press the matter further and instead changed the subject.

“City Lord Hu Lie.” Lin Fan turned her head, her golden, vertical pupils looking directly at Hu Lie. “What is the highest level of Evolved being that can pass through this Rift?”

Hu Lie was stunned for a moment.

He hadn’t expected Lin Fan to ask this.

“Why does Miss Ning Shuang ask this…?” Hu Lie asked tentatively.

Lin Fan’s expression didn’t change. “Just curious. The Rift I participated in battles at before could allow Level 6 Evolved beings to pass through.”

Hu Lie came to a sudden realization and nodded.

“I see.” He looked up at the Rift. “This Rift of ours in Azurewood City is small and has many restrictions.”

He paused.

“The highest it can allow through is Level 5.”

Lin Fan’s pupils contracted abruptly.

Level 5?

She was currently wearing Long Ningshuang’s Skin, and her superimposed physical attributes had already reached 2929 points, a solid Level 6.

This meant…

She couldn’t get through at all.
