Skinwalker Belle – Chapter 44 – Late Night

The night was as black as ink. In the eleventh-floor office, only the faint moonlight filtered through the blinds, casting patterns on the floor.

Lin Fan lay on her side in Lei Li’s arms, listening to her even breathing.

Lei Li was truly different tonight.

Previously, the slightest movement from her would cause Lei Li to snap her eyes open, her hand already reaching for the dagger under her pillow.

But now, Lei Li’s breathing was deep and steady; she had clearly fallen into a deep sleep.

Clearing out the entire building had finally allowed the woman to truly relax.

Lin Fan quietly cracked open an eye to observe Lei Li’s sleeping profile.

In the moonlight, her resolute face lost some of its daytime sharpness, replaced by a rare gentleness.

But even so, Lin Fan didn’t dare to make a rash move.

Lei Li’s physical prowess was too formidable; no sneak attack could guarantee a fatal blow.

The moment she had a chance to fight back, she would be the one to die.

She could only continue to wait.

Wait for an absolutely safe opportunity.

Lin Fan closed her eyes and regulated her breathing, making herself look as if she were truly fast asleep.

Time ticked by, second by second.

Around two in the morning, Lin Fan felt the person beside him stir.

Lei Li was awake.

Lin Fan immediately held her breath, maintaining her sleeping posture.

Lei Li gently turned on her side, gazing at the “Chen Yao” in her arms.

Moonlight spilled onto that delicate little face, her long eyelashes casting faint shadows on her cheeks.

Her pink lips were slightly parted, letting out soft breaths.

So adorable.

So adorable it made one want to…

Lei Li’s Adam’s apple bobbed. She reached out and gently caressed Lin Fan’s cheek.

Her fingertips traced over his smooth skin, warm and soft.

A chill ran down Lin Fan’s spine.

Here it comes…

…

Lei Li gently patted her back until her breathing became even again.

Then, she carefully straightened Lin Fan’s clothes.

After doing all this, Lei Li lay back down but could no longer fall asleep.

She stared at the ceiling, her heart a whirlwind of emotions.

What had she just done?

To a sleeping girl…

But seeing Chen Yao in such distress during her nightmare, she had only wanted to comfort her.

Yes, that was it.

Lei Li made excuses for her actions in her mind.

The early morning sun slanted through the gaps in the blinds, cutting strips of golden light across the floor.

Lin Fan slowly opened her eyes and found herself still in Lei Li’s arms.

Lei Li was lying on her side, looking at her with a complex expression in her eyes.

“Lei-jie, good morning.”

Lin Fan smiled sweetly, her voice as soft and fluffy as freshly made cotton candy.

“Good morning.”

Lei Li’s voice was a little hoarse; she clearly hadn’t slept well.

Lin Fan pretended to have just woken up and stretched lazily.

“I think I had a nightmare last night.”

She furrowed her little brow, looking perplexed.

“I dreamed that Lei-jie was going to leave me. It was so scary.”

Lei Li’s body visibly stiffened.

“It was just a dream. I won’t leave you.”

She reached out and stroked Lin Fan’s hair, her movements as gentle as if she were handling a precious work of art.

Lin Fan blinked her big eyes and suddenly moved closer to Lei Li.

“Lei-jie, your eyes are so red. Did you not sleep well?”

Lei Li subconsciously avoided his gaze.

“I was probably just too tired yesterday.”

Lin Fan tilted her head, a look of pure innocence on her face.

“Then let me massage your eyes for you, Lei-jie. I’ve learned how.”

She said, about to reach for Lei Li’s face.

Lei Li quickly grabbed her hand.

“That’s not necessary. We should get up.”

She scrambled out of bed and started dressing with her back to Lin Fan.

Watching Lei Li’s slightly flustered back, Lin Fan’s lips curved into a triumphant arc.

Last night’s “sleep talk” had worked wonders.

Lei Li’s mind was now filled with guilt and self-reproach.

“Lei-jie, wait for me.”

Lin Fan skipped along behind Lei Li to the cafeteria on the second floor.

It was breakfast time, and quite a few people were gathered in the cafeteria.

Seeing Lei Li and Lin Fan appear together, everyone greeted them one after another.

“Morning, Lei-jie.”

“Good morning, Xiao Yao.”

Lin Fan sweetly responded to everyone, her obedient and adorable appearance making everyone unable to resist a second look.

Ah Hu walked over with a bowl of congee.

“Xiao Yao, did you sleep well last night?”

Lin Fan shook her head, her small face full of grievance.

“I had a nightmare. I dreamed of a lot of scary things.”

“Luckily, Lei-jie was with me, or I would have been scared to tears.”

Ah Hu laughed heartily.

“Xiao Yao is just a scaredy-cat. But with Lei-jie protecting you, you have nothing to fear.”

Lei Li silently drank her congee off to the side, not saying a word.

Lin Fan secretly observed her expression and noticed that the tips of Lei Li’s ears were a little red.

It seemed last night’s events had quite an impact on her.

Soon, Lei Li gathered everyone in the command center on the sixth floor to begin planning the next step.
