Skinwalker Belle – Chapter 544 – Who Am I?

(Thanks to Brother Guli for the gift, adding an extra chapter today)

The door was shoved open from outside, slamming against the wall and bouncing back once.

Lei Li strode in.

She was wearing a leather jacket, leather pants, and tall heeled leather boots, with dried blood still caked on the boots—looked like she hadn’t changed since coming off the battlefield.

Her gaze swept across the infirmary and finally landed on the hospital bed.

Then, her footsteps stopped.

Lei Li just stood there in the doorway, not moving.

She stared at the unconscious white-haired woman on the bed for a full minute.

An inexplicable sense of familiarity welled up from the bottom of her heart.

It was as if she knew this person.

And had known her for a very, very long time.

“Lei Jie?”

Xiao Yao’s voice came from the side.

Lei Li snapped back to attention, walked over to the bed, and looked down at Lin Fan’s face.

“This is the one Ah Hu picked up?”

“Yeah.”

Xiao Yao pushed up her glasses.

“She was brought in about four hours ago and has been unconscious the whole time.”

Lei Li didn’t say anything, just bent down to get a closer look.

White hair spread across the entire bed, with the parts hanging down even piling up on the floor.

Her features were so delicate they seemed almost unreal.

Her skin was so pale it was nearly translucent—up close, you could even see faint patterns beneath the surface.

That wasn’t normal human skin.

“She’s really beautiful.”

Lei Li straightened up, her tone flat.

“Beautiful doesn’t even cover it.”

Xiao Yao’s expression was complicated.

“Lei Jie, come look at this.”

She led Lei Li over to the table beside them, where several examination records were spread out.

“Externally, she looks no different from a normal person—about 172 centimeters tall.”

“But her weight… honestly, I couldn’t get an accurate measurement.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, her bone density far exceeds that of a normal human.”

Xiao Yao picked up a bent needle and handed it to Lei Li.

“I tried to draw her blood.”

Lei Li took it and looked at it.

The needle tip was bent at a perfect ninety-degree angle, as if it had been jabbed into a steel plate.

“This isn’t a regular needle, is it?”

“It’s an 18-gauge puncture needle—the kind that can go straight into bone.”

Xiao Yao’s speech quickened.

“I went through three of them. All ruined.”

“The tissue layer under her skin is absurdly hard. It just can’t be penetrated.”

Lei Li set the bent needle back on the table.

“An Evolved being?”

“That’s what I thought at first.”

Xiao Yao shook her head.

“But I probed her with Spirit Energy detection—there’s nothing inside her.”

“Nothing?”

“Nothing at all.”

Xiao Yao emphasized it again.

“Spirit Energy, Mental Strength—no fluctuations of any kind can be detected.”

“In front of the detection equipment, she’s like a rock. Completely clean.”

Lei Li frowned.

“So she’s just an ordinary person?”

Xiao Yao stared into Lei Li’s eyes.

“Lei Jie, can a needle not pierce an ordinary person?”

Lei Li didn’t respond.

Xiao Yao walked back to the bed, lifted Lin Fan’s wrist, and pointed at the inside of it.

“Feel this.”

Lei Li reached out and pressed down.

The touch was ice-cold, unnaturally smooth.

The moment her fingertip made contact, she immediately felt a strange texture beneath the skin.

It was the sensation of a crystalline structure.

“I checked with the highest-magnification portable ultrasound.”

Xiao Yao’s voice dropped very low.

“Her bones—all of them are transparent crystalline structures.”

“Her bones?”

“Not just her bones.”

Xiao Yao took a deep breath.

“Her internal organs too.”

“Heart, liver, lungs, kidneys…”

“Every organ I can see is in a semi-transparent crystalline form.”

“The shapes are still there, their functions… I’m not sure.”

“But they’re no longer normal organic tissue.”

The infirmary fell silent for a few seconds.

Lei Li released her grip and took a step back.

She looked anew at the white-haired woman on the bed.

“Are you sure you’re not mistaken?”

“I’ve been alive for thirty years, worked as a surgeon for eight, and I’ve operated on all kinds of Evolved beings since the apocalypse began.”

Xiao Yao’s expression was so serious it bordered on solemn.

“I’ve never seen anything like this.”

“She’s not human.”

“At least, not human in any way we understand.”

Xiao Yao added.

“But her appearance is indeed completely identical to a human’s.”

“She breathes, she has a heartbeat—low in frequency, but consistently steady.”

“But if you were to call her human…”

“Then she’s a human whose entire skeleton and internal organs have turned to crystal.”

Lei Li was silent for a moment.

She looked down at Lin Fan once more.

That face lay quiet and peaceful, long lashes occasionally trembling.

Her breathing was calm, her chest rising and falling gently.

That inexplicable sense of closeness surged up again.

Like looking at another version of herself.

“We’ll wait until she wakes up to talk about it.”

Lei Li finally spoke.

“Huh? That’s… that’s it?”

Xiao Yao was taken aback.

“Don’t you want to run more tests? What if she’s—”

“What? An enemy?”

Lei Li cut her off.

“Ah Hu said hundreds of zombies in the vicinity didn’t dare approach her.”

“If she can make zombies feel fear, that means she holds overwhelming dominance over them.”

“Whatever she truly is, she’s unconscious right now, and we won’t get any answers from her.”

Xiao Yao opened her mouth, then said nothing more.

“Notify me immediately if anything comes up.”

Lei Li headed for the door, then stopped after two steps.

“Xiao Yao.”

“Hmm?”

“Don’t let anyone else into this ward.”

“Got it.”

Lei Li pulled open the door.

Outside, Ah Hu was leaning against the wall waiting. The moment he saw her emerge, he straightened up at once.

“Lei Jie, what’s the situation?”

“No idea.”

Lei Li walked past him, heading straight for the end of the corridor.

“Keep an eye on things. I’m going to check on Lin Fan.”

“Lin Fan-ge still hasn’t woken up?”

“No.”

Lei Li’s footsteps gradually faded into the distance.

Ah Hu peeked into the infirmary and happened to meet Xiao Yao’s gaze.

“What are you looking at? Get out!”

The door slammed shut from the inside with a bang.

Ah Hu pulled his head back and rubbed his nose.

“Acting like it’s military secrets in there.”

…

Three days later.

Xiao Yao performed routine checks every eight hours.

But the results never changed.

Body temperature slightly low, heartbeat steady, faint brainwave activity.

The crystallized body structure showed no change either.

Lei Li had come by twice in between, but each time she stayed less than ten minutes before leaving.

Most of her energy was devoted to the other ward.

—The one holding Lin Fan, who had remained unconscious since the great battle with the Dragon Clan.

His injuries were far more severe than anticipated.

On the fourth night.

Xiao Yao was on the night shift, dozing on the folding cot nearby.

The ward was quiet, broken only by the occasional beep of the monitors.

Suddenly, she heard a faint sound.

Like the rustle of fabric against sheets.

Xiao Yao jolted awake, her eyes snapping open.

On the hospital bed, the white-haired woman’s fingers twitched.

First the right index finger, then the middle finger.

Five fingers slowly spread apart, clenched into a fist, then spread open again.

Xiao Yao sat up abruptly.

She saw that the person on the bed had opened her eyes.

They were a pair of pure, bewildered black pupils, with a universe of stars swirling within, so deep they seemed bottomless.

But at this moment, like a newborn infant, she was taking in the world around her.

The white-haired woman braced herself against the bed and slowly sat up.

She raised her hand and held it before her eyes.

Pale white palm, slender fingers, without a single flaw.

She turned it over to look at the back of her hand, then turned it back to examine her palm.

As if seeing her own hand for the very first time.

Her lips moved slightly.

A soft, hoarse voice emerged, dry from having been silent for so long.

“Who… am I?”

Xiao Yao instinctively tightened her grip on the walkie-talkie in her hand.

The white-haired woman turned her head, her gaze falling on Xiao Yao.

Those eyes, devoid of any emotion, quietly looked at her.

“Where is this?”

Xiao Yao immediately pressed the button on her walkie-talkie.

“Lei Jie, she’s awake!”

There was a second of silence on the other end.

Then Lei Li’s urgent voice came through.

“I’m on my way.”

Lin Fan sat on the hospital bed, looking down at the white hair that spread across the entire bed.

She reached out and grabbed a handful.

Very long.

Very soft.

The sensation of the strands slipping through her fingers felt foreign to her.

Her head hurt terribly.

Her mind was hazy, as if shrouded in fog—she couldn’t remember anything.

At the end of the corridor, hurried footsteps were rapidly approaching.
