Skinwalker Belle – Chapter 56 – The Mantis Catches the Cicada, While I Am Behind!
The armored vehicle roared like a steel behemoth.
Its target was the Fragrant Hills International building ahead, which was submerged in a horde of zombies.
Countless zombies, like overgrown fungi, clung densely to the building’s lower levels, frantically clawing at the sealed entrance with their rotten nails and teeth.
“Roar…”
The piercing shrieks converged into a sea of noise.
Meanwhile, on the rooftop of a building opposite Fragrant Hills International, a dozen or so people were leisurely watching this apocalyptic siege.
A burly man with a fleshy face was currently bowing and scraping.
The object of his fawning was a young man who looked ordinary, even a little frail.
“Young Master Lin, look, they’re about to collapse.”
The fleshy-faced man smiled obsequiously.
“Once that horde of zombies wears them out and breaks through their defenses, won’t all the supplies and women inside be yours for the taking?”
The man addressed as “Young Master Lin” didn’t even bother to lift his eyelids, merely letting out a faint “Mm” as if he were completely indifferent to the scene before him.
Just then.
“Rumble…”
The sound of an armored vehicle’s engine grew from a distant rumble to a roar, instantly capturing everyone’s attention.
“Holy shit! What the hell is that thing?”
The fawning smile on the fleshy-faced man’s face froze. He stared wide-eyed at the armored vehicle barreling toward them, his face a mask of disbelief.
The convoy stopped a hundred meters from the building’s entrance.

Lin Fan stepped out of the armored vehicle. She wore a tattered black leather jacket and pants, and her knee-high stiletto boots trod upon the blood-stained ground, yet remained spotless.
She looked up, her gaze passing over the surging horde of zombies and landing precisely on the group of people on the opposite rooftop.
“The mantis stalks the cicada…”
A cold arc formed on her lips.
“…unaware of the flock of witless flies behind.”
Ah Hu, Xiao Wang, and the others quickly disembarked, a trace of gravity and lingering fear on each of their faces.
“Lei-jie, we’re surrounded by zombies!”
“And there are people… there are people on the opposite building watching us!”
Lin Fan paid no mind to their panic, simply issuing a command in a tone that brooked no argument.
“Ah Hu, get on the armored vehicle, use the heavy machine gun.”
“Everyone else, grab your rifles and fire at will.”
Her voice wasn’t loud, but it carried a strange, penetrating quality that instantly soothed the group’s anxiety.
“Target: all zombies ahead. Clear me a path!”
“Yes, Lei-jie!”
Ah Hu roared and scrambled into the armored vehicle’s machine gun position.
Zhou Ming, looking utterly lost, numbly followed the crowd and retrieved an automatic rifle from the vehicle. His eyes were vacant, like a walking corpse.
The others also quickly took their positions, forming a firing line beside the armored vehicle.

But Lin Fan didn’t move.
She leaned leisurely against the SUV, arms crossed, watching with great interest.
She was observing both the “oriole” on the opposite rooftop and testing the mettle of her new team.
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat!
The deafening roar of metal suddenly erupted.
The heavy machine gun on top of the armored vehicle spat a long tongue of fire. The 12.7mm bullets, like the Grim Reaper’s scythe, instantly swept through the dense horde of zombies.
Flesh and blood flew everywhere.
Severed limbs and mangled remains were torn apart and flung into the air by the powerful kinetic energy.
A wide channel was brutally plowed through the once-packed horde of zombies.
“Fire!” Xiao Wang bellowed.
Seven or eight automatic rifles opened fire simultaneously, weaving a dense rain of bullets that covered the heavy machine gun’s blind spots.
The zombies that had luckily dodged the machine gun’s sweep were riddled with rifle bullets before they could even get close, collapsing one after another.
The scene was, for a moment, spectacular.
This was no longer a battle.
It was a one-sided slaughter.
On the opposite rooftop.
The fleshy-faced man and his subordinates were all dumbfounded, their mouths agape enough to fit an egg.
“An… an armored vehicle? A heavy machine gun? And… and everyone has an automatic rifle?”

A scrawny underling who looked like a monkey was trembling as he spoke.
“Boss, who… who the hell are these guys, the regular army? Are we… are we still gonna fight them?”
Cold sweat beaded on the fleshy-faced man’s forehead. He subconsciously glanced at Young Master Lin beside him.
However, there was still not a ripple of emotion on the young master’s face.
He even let out a soft chuckle, his tone tinged with amusement.
“A little interesting.”
One of his subordinates standing beside him chimed in softly, “How can these mundane firearms compare to Young Master Lin’s abilities?”
Young Master Lin neither confirmed nor denied it, his gaze simply piercing through the smoke and landing on the woman who was leaning against the vehicle, leisurely watching the battle.
“That woman… is a little interesting.”
Lin Fan felt that scrutinizing gaze.
She was also looking at him.
Thanks to her physical constitution, which was twenty times that of an ordinary person, her eyesight was astonishingly good.
She could clearly see that the man called “Young Master Lin” showed not the slightest hint of panic, even under such intense firepower.
It was a calmness born from absolute confidence.
Like an adult watching a group of kindergarteners play with water guns.
“An Evolved being…”
For the first time, a genuine thrill rose in Lin Fan’s heart.

This was definitely no ordinary person.
In just a few short minutes.
The gunfire gradually subsided.
At the entrance of the Fragrant Hills International building, the thousand-strong horde of zombies had been reduced to a writhing mass of minced flesh and severed limbs on the ground.
The air was thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder and blood.
“Lei-jie! It’s clear!”
Ah Hu shouted excitedly as he jumped down from the armored vehicle.
“Well done.”
Lin Fan gave a faint nod and ordered, “Stay alert. Prepare to enter the building.”
After speaking, out of habit, she glanced again at the opposite rooftop.
Her pupils constricted slightly at what she saw.
On the roof, the fleshy-faced man and his group of subordinates were still there, each one looking like a terrified quail.
Except…
The frail man in the very center, the one called “Young Master Lin.”
He was gone.
Not that he had run, nor was he hiding.
He had simply vanished into thin air, right where he stood.
