DUELS

Duels are battles fought, not necessarily between two individual participants. They can happen even if one side is outnumbered by their adversary. Typically, a duel would commence when one challenger approaches their enemy by announcing their aim, whether this is for the restoration of one’s honour, prize money, or control over other various elements. The same challenger would then have to announce what loss would befall them if they lost this duel but it must always be equal in value to the subject of gain else the challenged can refuse the duel. These are domestic duels, or duels which happen between civilians. On a battlefield, there are not many reasons for one to declare a duel and it is a high-stakes play. Even one loss can setback the advances of an army by weeks or even months, hence usually, the challenger often comes from the side which has less to lose. There are a few rules to this: firstly, a duel on the battlefield can only be initiated by a soldier of import, for example, a general. Secondly, most terms are set within the confines of battle meaning any gain or loss must only affect the current battle the duelists are fighting in. It can be said that there are two types of fighters on the battlefield: those who are better at fighting many and those who are better at fighting one or few. Both Jacek Florian and Igor Rzhev fall into the category of the latter.
