Chapter 2: Retribution Comes So Quickly:
“Sister Huilan, you’re joking, right? I’m a grown man with hands and feet. How could I rely on a woman for support?” Yue Bing said earnestly. “I might not earn much delivering takeout, but it’s enough to get by.”
Everyone knew what she meant by ‘godbrother.’ It was all just a ploy. There’s no way he’d fall for it.
Li Huilan’s smile faded, and she crossed her arms over her chest, raising her smooth, fair chin and arching an eyebrow. “Fine, then pay the rent. You’re three days late. Don’t say I didn’t give you enough time.”
So, he was making a living delivering takeout? Then let’s talk about money.
The rent was 2,400 yuan a month for a two-bedroom apartment.
In this location, it wasn’t too expensive. Li Huilan, being the wealthy woman she was, owned the entire building. It wasn’t that Yue Bing didn’t want to pay; it’s just that the 6,000 yuan he had saved was meant for something specific and couldn’t be touched.
“Uh, Sister Lan, I promise I’ll pay you next month.” Yue Bing assured, thumping his chest with conviction, making his well-built chest muscles catch Li Huilan’s eye.
Her seductive gaze shifted, and a smile returned to her face. “How about this? Your rent is 2,400 yuan a month, which comes to 80 yuan a day. You’ve been late for three days now, so if you give your sister a kiss, I’ll waive one day’s rent. How does that sound?”
She stepped away from the doorframe and walked slowly toward Yue Bing, her manicured finger pressing against his chest.
Uh…
As a proud man, he couldn’t bow down for mere grains of rice. But the offer was tempting!
A kiss for 80 yuan.
It was just a kiss, right? She won’t drain her life force with that, would she?
…
“Next month, don’t come asking me for rent!” Yue Bing said, supporting the now-limp Li Huilan as she clung to him.
Her face was flushed with a drunken hue, her eyes brimming with affection as she writhed against him. “Why don’t you… pay for the month after next, too?”
Yue Bing refused.
No way. If he kept going, he wouldn’t be able to control himself.
At that point, he’d be handing over more than just rent—he’d be handing over his life!
“Alright, Sister Lan, take it easy on your way back!” Yue Bing said as he guided the trembling Li Huilan out the door, shutting it firmly behind her.
Li Huilan stared at the tightly closed door, biting her red lips. “So that’s what a kiss feels like… That brat! He actually resisted! I refuse to believe I can’t get him!”
Yue Bing had moved into the building six months ago.
From the moment she first laid eyes on him, Li Huilan felt an inexplicable flutter in her heart. Oh no, it was love at first sight with this young man, much younger than her.
She had hinted at her feelings several times, but Yue Bing always pretended not to understand.
Even though Li Huilan had been married three times, she was still a virgin!
The fortune-teller said she had a fierce White Tiger fate that doomed her husbands. Unless she found someone with a stronger fate, she’d never be able to marry—otherwise, every husband would die.
She secretly noted down Yue Bing’s birthdate and consulted the fortune-teller again. The fortune-teller said that while others have an eight-character fate, this guy had a nine-character fate, which was perfect!
Li Huilan was overjoyed and immediately rewarded the fortune-teller with 10,000 yuan.
Hearing the clatter of high heels fade away outside the door, Yue Bing wiped the lipstick from his lips and returned to his meal. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to be her godbrother, it was just that she would doom her husbands!
He picked up his chopsticks and was about to eat when suddenly, his heart seized with pain. A wave of suffocation overcame him.
“Pant, pant… Is retribution coming so quickly?” He gasped. “Li Huilan, you really are toxic!”
The bowl and chopsticks slipped from his weakening grasp, crashing to the floor.
Clutching his chest, Yue Bing struggled for breath, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t draw in any fresh air. It felt as if all the oxygen in the room had been sucked out.
In just a few moments, he was on the floor, mouth agape, in agony. The dizziness from oxygen deprivation slowly caused him to lose consciousness.
“Yue Bing, Yue Bing.”
He didn’t know how much time had passed when suddenly, he heard someone calling his name.
“Ugh, who… who’s calling me?”
Yue Bing slowly opened his eyes. The voice was clear and pleasant but unfamiliar.
“Yue Bing, your time on earth is up. Come with me to the underworld.” the cold, emotionless voice spoke again, snapping Yue Bing awake.
Time’s up? The underworld?
He bolted upright, only to see someone sitting at the table.
The person was wearing a moon-white cheongsam, their graceful figure accentuated by the dress. Long legs were crossed elegantly, the high slit of the cheongsam revealing a dazzlingly white thigh.
Her slender waist was the kind that could be held with one hand, and her delicate oval face was expressionless. She appeared to be around 22 or 23 years old, with a head of snow-white silver hair cascading down her back, reaching her waist. She wore a white beret with a few crookedly embroidered characters.
Yue Bing squinted to read them: “Fortune upon meeting.”
