Chapter 20.2
Chapter 20.2
As a bystander Wen Yi felt pity. She softened her voice when speaking to her. “I came to find your brother. Do you know where he is?”
Qin Tan nodded. “I know. Cousin has a lecture tonight in the small auditorium.”
With Qin Tan leading the way, Wen Yi instantly felt much more at ease. On the way she spoke with her. “What major are you studying?”
“Chinese language and literature.”
… Wen Yi did not understand much about it and decided not to force the topic. She switched to asking, “Is the study pressure heavy?”
“It is all right.”
“… What do you usually like to do?”
After waiting a good while Wen Yi heard no answer. She turned to look. The girl was walking while thinking. After a long time she said, “Nothing I particularly like to do.”
Wen Yi understood. This was truly Qin Nanshan’s blood sister.
She felt even more heartache. Girls of this age ought to be youthful and lively, freely seeking happiness, like Qin Xi.
Wen Yi did not let the atmosphere grow cold. “What is your brother speaking about today?”
Qin Tan: “It is our school’s ‘Famous Teacher Lecture Hall.’ The lecture topic is decided by the teacher himself. I saw on the poster that it is Mathematics and Life.”
Wen Yi raised an eyebrow. She had not expected he could still talk about such a down-to-earth topic.
“But many people competed for seats. There are basically no empty ones.”
“Ah? Did you manage to get one?”
Qin Tan parted her lips and smiled, revealing a bit of a little girl’s cute cunning. “I got one, and I also helped my roommate get one.”
Wen Yi praised her. “Then you are very capable. Next time please help me grab concert tickets.”
“No problem!”
But right now there was still an important problem. “How do I get in?”
Qin Tan subconsciously asked, “Does Cousin not know you are coming? He can save a seat for you.”
“He does not know. I want to give him a surprise.”
Qin Tan secretly looked at her. The woman’s smile was bright, her small expression proud and happy. She lowered her eyes and said softly, “My roommate went on a date with her boyfriend. I originally did not want to go alone. Now Cousin-sister-in-law, you can sit with me, but, but it is relatively toward the back.”
“It does not matter.” Wen Yi smiled gently. “Xiao Tan, you can call me sister-in-law like Qin Xi does. No need to be so polite.”
Qin Tan was stunned for a while, then nodded. “All right… Sister-in-law.”
While talking they arrived at the small auditorium. It was almost seven. Many students were entering. Thanks to Qin Tan, Wen Yi smoothly took a seat.
There was just a bit of awkwardness. All around were young university students. A somewhat older pregnant woman like her stood out.
Qin Tan noticed her awkwardness and thoughtfully comforted her. “Sister-in-law, when you sit down the belly cannot be seen, and you are very pretty, like a senior.”
As soon as Wen Yi heard this she took back the thoughts of the previous few minutes. Qin Tan’s mouth was much sweeter than Qin Nanshan’s.
She lowered her head to look at herself. Fortunately she had worn a dress and put on makeup. Otherwise she would not even dare accept this title of senior.
Wen Yi satisfactorily curved her lips. “Then you just call me senior.”
“Mm mm.”
At seven the lights on the stage dimmed a little, then brightened again. The host’s voice expanded outward. “Dear students, today is the first session of this semester’s ‘Famous Teacher Lecture Hall.’ We are very honored to invite Associate Professor Qin Nanshan of the Mathematics Department to lecture for us on Mathematics and Life. Let us welcome Professor Qin with warm applause.”
For one lecture the small auditorium held five or six hundred people. The applause gathered and was deafening.
Qin Nanshan walked out from backstage. The spotlight followed his movement.
Their seats were toward the back. They could not see the expression on his face, only his upright figure. He wore a black casual suit with an ink-blue tie. His entire presence was outstanding.
Wen Yi was momentarily dazed… She seemed not to have properly looked at him for a week… He felt a bit unfamiliar.
A marvelous feeling burst out in her mind. The person on the stage right now was her husband. Truly miraculous. Who would have thought that on a Friday evening that should have been for letting loose she would actually appear here listening to a mathematics lecture?
After Qin Nanshan appeared the applause grew even louder. The students’ sharp cheers came in waves, as enthusiastic as a star-chasing scene. Wen Yi lowered her head and asked Qin Tan, “Are the students at your school usually this passionate?”
Qin Tan: “No. It is because of Cousin… because of Brother Nanshan.”
“So popular?”
“Yes. Last semester Brother Nanshan opened an elective course on professional mathematics. It was snapped up so hard the system crashed. But later the failure rate reached as high as 60 percent.”
Wen Yi laughed despite herself and raised her head to look at the stage.
Qin Nanshan had already taken his seat. In the center of the stage was a pure-colored PPT homepage, a school logo, a lecture title, and a name: Qin Nanshan. As always, simple and clean.
The auditorium’s sound system was excellent. The man’s low and pleasant voice echoed in their ears. “Hello everyone. I am Qin Nanshan.”
“The content I am sharing today is mathematics and life. If I ask everyone to think right now, what in life is related to mathematics?”
From below came a pile of answers about buying vegetables and paying bills. The man on the stage smiled. “Correct. In fact, from the moment you get up, wash, eat breakfast, to going out the door, you have already used the six equations in mathematics that have the greatest influence on humanity…”
After listening to a few sentences Wen Yi suddenly understood the reason he was popular.
Looks were only a bonus point. At this moment the steady and wise presence on the stage and the knowledge that came readily to hand were the inner reasons that attracted people. He was like a cedar tree gently swaying with the wind, unconsciously giving off a deep and quiet aura. He did not stop for anyone, yet the people who passed by always stopped for him.
Halfway through the lecture, as the professional knowledge increased, this cedar’s aura filled the entire small auditorium. Everyone held their breath for it.
At some point the seat beside Wen Yi that was near the edge had changed people. It was an older man, probably also a teacher. She turned to look. The old teacher happened to look over as well. Their gazes met.
Old Chen smiled slightly and took the initiative. “Young lady, you do not look like a student from our school.”
“Correct, I am not.” Wen Yi always felt there was something a bit strange in the way he looked at her, but she could not say where. “And you are?”
Old Chen cast a glance toward the stage and answered without answering. “He is your?”
Even stranger. Wen Yi answered, “My husband.”
Old Chen smiled in understanding. Qin Nanshan had gotten married before the New Year. At that time there had been family matters so he could not attend the wedding. He had only seen the bride in the photos shared by the students. When he sat down earlier he had felt the girl beside him looked familiar. He had not expected it to truly be her.
Old Chen pointed at Qin Nanshan on the stage and said proudly, “That is my student.”
Wen Yi was surprised. “You are Professor Chen?”
“Has that stinky brat mentioned me to you?”
In fact he had not said much. It was only that the wedding had originally planned to invite Old Chen as the wedding witness. Qin Nanshan had made two phone calls in front of her. But Wen Yi’s mouth was sweet. “Of course. You are someone he greatly admires. He often mentions you. He regretted for a long time that you could not come to the wedding.”
When Old Chen heard this he could not help smiling inside. With Qin Nanshan’s personality, that he would talk about himself to his wife was already frightening. Old Chen looked at Wen Yi more carefully. This student of his was not much, but the wife he married was quite good.
Old Chen asked, “You were high school classmates?”
Wen Yi was surprised again. “You know?”
Old Chen smiled lightly. “Yes. He said he liked you very much and pursued you for half a year.”
“…” Hearing this story again now, Wen Yi was so embarrassed her toes curled into the ground. She could only pretend to be shy and muddle through.
Qin Nanshan’s personality was reserved. Old Chen had once worried he would spend the rest of his life with mathematics. Now that he was married and having a child, it was beyond his expectations. Old Chen spoke again with a bit more seriousness. “Nanshan’s personality is stubborn. Once he decides on something he will not regret it. Once he does something he always wants a result. The fact that he now chooses to start a family with you must be after deep consideration.”
“Young lady, people who study mathematics are reliable in feelings, because their whole lives they research existence and uniqueness.” Old Chen said so much with only one purpose. “If he makes you unhappy, be more understanding. This stinky brat is clumsy with words and foolish. He does not know how to coax people, but toward you it is certainly genuine.”
Wen Yi was stunned by Old Chen’s words and nodded blankly. “I understand.”
The lecture gradually reached its end. The applause of the whole hall became warm again.
Next was the question-and-answer session. As soon as the host’s words finished the scene lost control. Boys and girls asked one question after another. The host only managed to maintain order with great difficulty.
The first two were still fairly proper and related to academics. From the third question it began to go off course. “Teacher Qin, I heard you are married. Is that true?”
The whole hall fell silent.
After a moment a calm answer came through the speakers. “Yes.”
“Can you share your process of falling in love?” The girl who asked spoke clearly and with conviction. “University students easily go astray in relationships. Teacher Qin, how do you think we should properly conduct a relationship?”
Qin Tan and Old Chen both looked toward Wen Yi.
Wen Yi’s feelings were complicated. She wanted to find a hole to crawl into. What could be more embarrassing than sitting below listening to her plastic husband make up a love story!!
But Qin Nanshan was no ordinary person. He did not make anything up. From the microphone there even came a low, deep laugh. “It so happens that my wife is also present. She is the most important character in the story. Why not let her tell everyone?”
Wen Yi: “???”
!!! What kind of operation was this!!!
The hall erupted in a roar. Professor Qin’s wife was actually present! This was publicly showing off their affection!!
