Chapter 38: Ghosts Do Eat People.
Chapter 38: Ghosts Do Eat People.
Chapter 38: Ghosts Can Eat People, You Know.
"Can't we do it that way?"
Wen Yu gave Gu Junhan a pitiful, pleading look.
Gu Junhan's large hand covered Wen Yu's eyes. "We can."
The cousin's husband knelt on the ground, trembling all over. He saw the man lift his gaze and shoot him a look.
The cousin's husband was scared out of his wits. "No, no! Don't! Wen Yu, just let me die."
The men in black beside him—two held him down while the other got to work.
The cousin's husband began to shake violently, his teeth chattering, a far cry from the man who, just hours ago, had the nerve to lay hands on Wen Yu after a few drinks.
Wen Yu's eyes were covered, and all he could hear were the screams.
One slash, and the pain was like a tomcat being neutered. His tongue stuck out, and his eyes rolled back in his head.
"Ahhhh!"
"My... it's gone! Gone!"
The cousin's husband wailed, and Wen Yu was wrapped in Gu Junhan's arms. After the man gave a signal, the cousin's husband was dragged out.
His hand stayed over Wen Yu's eyes the whole time, never moving.
Tears slid silently down the boy's face from between the fingers of that hand.
"What's wrong?" Gu Junhan moved his hand away, and the tear soaked into the back of the man's hand.
"It was a little scary," Wen Yu answered honestly, but the heavy weight in his chest seemed to lift, and so did the grievance.
"But it felt pretty satisfying, though."
Wen Yu felt that finally, someone was willing to listen to what he had to say. Gu Junhan helped him and was even willing to do things his way.
Instead of making decisions for him based on what Gu Junhan thought was best.
The man's profile looked a little softer in the night, and Wen Yu's frail, small frame was wrapped in Gu Junhan's gaze.
"From now on, whatever you want to do, go for it boldly."
"Yeah!"
..
Afterward, word spread through the wealthy circles, and Wen Yu caught most of it.
Apparently, his cousin's husband divorced his cousin less than a week after they got married.
The cousin caught him cheating at a hotel, found him in bed with several men, going at it. The two had a complete falling out, especially since the cousin was dead set on ruining her ex-husband's company.
If this were on [some platform], this gossip would be juicy as hell!
Wen Yu sat on the sofa at home, writing the assignment the professor had given—understanding how companies make money and how finance serves the real economy.
The topic was: break down a company.
Wen Yu's head was spinning, and he searched on Baidu.
What company should he pick? Wen Yu scratched his head, stumped, his face pressed against the coffee table, his back hunched over.
He remembered the Wanxing Company the professor had mentioned in class—the one that makes alcohol?
Silvermoon City had a Wanxing branch. If he went to check it out, he'd probably learn more than he could online.
Wen Baichuan was in his study, startled to see Wen Yu walk in. "Wen Yu, something up?"
"Dad, do we have any business with Wanxing Company?" Wen Yu asked cautiously.
Wen Baichuan's fingers paused on the desk.
"This..." Wen Baichuan's speech slowed a beat. "We're currently in talks. Your older brother's been stressing over it."
"Then, can I go with my brother to check it out?"
"The school assignment is to break down a company. Can I go see it?"
Wen Yu spoke in a soft voice.
Wen Baichuan thought it over, remembering how Wen Yu had brought back goods worth two billion from the auction last time. If he got lucky and his friend stepped in, the deal would go smoothly.
"Alright." Wen Baichuan agreed with a knowing look.
Soon, they arrived at the entrance of the Wanxing branch.
It was an eighteen-story building. They walked in, and the front desk was empty.
The floor was cold and smooth. As he stepped on it, Wen Yu paused for a moment, his toes curled inside his shoes.
Wen Hanzhou was led away by someone.
"President Wen, this way. The materials are ready." The staff member in the dark suit gestured toward the elevator at the end of the corridor.
Wen Hanzhou nodded, took two steps, stopped, and turned back to glance at Wen Yu.
"Wait here," Wen Hanzhou instructed him. "I'll call you when I'm done."
Wen Yu nodded.
His brother was gone.
Wen Yu stood alone in the spacious hall, which felt like an emptied-out showroom, just the building itself left behind.
"Young Master Wen."
The voice came from behind Wen Yu.
A young woman stood at the entrance of the corridor, wearing a dark coat, her hair tied back in a simple ponytail.
"Please follow me," she said.
"Where to?" Wen Yu asked curiously.
The young woman smiled, as if she knew how to answer. "President Wen told our CEO earlier that you wanted to see our company to complete some homework."
Wen Yu said, "Alright."
Wen Yu walked through the corridor, passed the elevator entrance, and then came to a door that didn't match any of the others in the building.
There was a click.
The young woman just stood there, and the door swung open.
Wen Yu stood at the threshold, his gaze traveling through the doorway and settling on the far wall at the back of the room.
Inside, there was a row of wine cabinets.
Dark wooden shelves ran from floor to ceiling, each one holding a bottle of wine.
They were dark glass bottles with gold-stamped logos, just like the wines in Gu Junhan's estate cellar.
"Go on in, Young Master Wen." The young woman smiled. "Someone will help you get familiar with our company."
As soon as Wen Yu stepped inside, the young woman shut the door.
The carpet was thick and soft, like walking on freshly cut grass. Wen Yu walked in, got to the sofa, and stopped.
The dark leather sofa was wide and deep, with a faint indentation on the cushion, as if someone had been sitting there recently.
Standing in front of the sofa, he noticed the floor-to-ceiling window beside the desk, its curtains drawn with just a sliver of light showing through.
Wen Yu pulled the curtain aside slightly.
Outside, there was a small balcony with a table and two chairs.
Gu Junhan leaned slightly forward, his elbows resting on the railing, his posture as casual as if he were just chilling on his own balcony.
Wen Yu was still standing in front of the sofa, unsure whether to stay standing or sit down.
Gu Junhan leaned back in his chair, his gaze resting on him. "Didn't you say you had homework? Come have a seat."
"Do you work at Wanxing?" Wen Yu's voice was small as he sat down across from Gu Junhan.
"I own this place." There was a stack of documents beside Gu Junhan. "I heard from Wen Hanzhou that his younger brother was coming. I didn't expect it to be you, little Bao. Of course I had to wait for you properly."
Wait for him? Gu Junhan was like a persistent ghost—after chatting at night, he'd always send a goodnight message, and in the morning, he'd always send a good morning one too.
Otherwise, the next day, Gu Junhan would corner Wen Yu at the school gate, at his doorstep, or even in public places.
Whenever he wasn't satisfied, Gu Junhan would use the excuse: "Aren't we friends?"
Whenever Wen Yu heard that, his heart would soften.
"Um," Wen Yu swallowed nervously, speaking somewhat presumptuously, "Gu Junhan... are you a ghost?"
Gu Junhan's brow twitched slightly, a faint trace of amusement in his voice. "Wen Yu, what do you think?"
"Ghosts eat people, you know."
