Chapter 23
Chapter 23
It was indeed an impressive scene.
Adam's eyes could not see the entirety of the port city, but the pier was already shocking enough.
The application of magical technology had completely surpassed that of Earth. With Ether, magic, and the existence of 'mysterious' energy, it was easy to turn a technology from theory into reality.
All the 'machines' working on the pier were completely out of the realm of traditional power that Adam understood. In other words, with Adam's current knowledge, there was no way he could understand the principles behind them.
The floating mechanical arms accurately grabbed onto the hull of the ship and fixed it firmly on the 'slot' of the pier. An unknown material appeared beneath everyone's feet. The mages gestured for the apprentices to step on, and the passage began to move, sending everyone to the pier.
What followed was a silver flood. The naked eye could not tell if it was an individual or a group. Adam spread out his spiritual power and vaguely observed that it was an alchemy product that looked like nanomachines. They instantly enveloped the Moldova College and disappeared at the same speed. Adam realized that the stains and wear on the ship after a long voyage had been completely repaired. The entire ship looked brand new.
Then, the ship 'merged' into the pier in an unknown way and disappeared.
In other parts of the port, the same thing was happening. The apprentices even saw bigger and more magical ships appearing. Not only on the sea, but also in the sky from time to time, there were flying objects docking there.
There was no need for a runway. There was no noise or turbulence. The flying machines took off and landed smoothly.
The mages did not care about the apprentices' shock. They were already used to such scenes. This was the first step for the 'natives' from the islands to understand the world of mages.
"Is this the world of mages? A world like this is simply … simply … "William muttered to himself. On the island where he was born, the port city in the south was already the most developed city, but it still could not escape the constraints of primitive production. He could not imagine that the humans on the other side of the sea lived like this.
"It's unbelievable. No wonder I've never seen any mages before, not even apprentices. If I saw this, I wouldn't be able to go back to my old life." Ophelia sighed to herself. She had lived in the Northern Lands since she was young, so she was less knowledgeable than William. Therefore, she was more shocked.
Adam felt extremely gratified. Coming to such a world, coming into contact with such an advanced civilization, and having the opportunity to explore the unknown, he did not have to spend the rest of his life in solitude. This was simply too good.
After waiting quietly at the port for a while, a 'car' drove over. It was not in the shape of a car that Adam was familiar with. It did not have wheels or exhaust pipes. The car hovered at a low altitude and stopped steadily in front of the mages.
The door opened, and a driver in a colorful uniform bowed respectfully to the mages. "Respected mages, welcome back to the Mages' Continent. The application for the teleportation portal has been completed. It will be activated in two hours."
Wizard Blake nodded at him and said to the apprentices, "Unfortunately, there is no time for you to visit Port Karachi this time. The apprentices of the same batch as you have already arrived at the academy. We need to hurry."
Of course, the apprentices did not dare to have any doubts. They said in unison, "As you wish, respected Mage Black."
Everyone filed into the car. The space inside the car was much bigger than what it looked like from the outside. Adam could not help but be amazed. Even the knowledge of space could be expanded to civilian use?
But in such a developed world, there was still such a barbaric way of fighting like the academy war? Adam kept this question in his heart. He would soon embark on the path, so he would soon have a basic understanding of the mages' world.
In the car, Corestal was very curious. She asked the driver, "Sir, the vehicle we are taking …" In her mind, there were only two types of transportation: animal-drawn vehicles and boats. She did not know what to call it.
The driver was very easy to talk to. He gently explained, "This is the name of the universal hovering car in the world. It was created by the great mages. "
"Amazing!" Corestal expressed her amazement very simply. She really could not think of any other words.
The driver did not say anything else. Facing these apprentices from the 'deserted island', he felt a slight sense of superiority in his heart. It was probably something like 'Although I don't have the talent to be a mage, I can still enjoy the fruits of being a mage'.
The universal hovering car in the world seemed to be sealed off from the outside, but the people sitting in the car could clearly see the outside world.
Adam carefully observed what he saw and heard on the road. The buildings were all high-rise structures. Every single one of them was integrated into one, towering into the clouds. There were light flowing on top of them, but the distribution was not dense. There were large areas of open space between them. Facilities similar to driveways were arranged neatly. Countless hovering cars were driving in the middle and lower levels. The higher levels were empty. Adam guessed that it should be a passage for the extraordinary to fly.
There were not many people on the ground, but the way they walked was very unusual. After all, they lived in such an inconceivable and huge city. If they relied on normal walking methods, it would probably take a very long time to reach their destination. So, most of them used blood energy to move forward. Occasionally, there would be people who used abilities that he did not understand. These were probably mage apprentices.
As expected, the native commoners of the Mage Continent all had the power of a knight.
Along the way, Adam saw at least three fights. There were knights fighting against each other, and there were even magic duels. However, no one stepped forward to stop them. The law enforcers and other personnel never appeared. Everyone was used to fighting.
Adam pointed at the scene of the fight and asked the driver curiously, "No one stopped it?"
The driver said very calmly, "It's a very common thing. At least a dozen people die in duels in the Port of Karachi every day. As long as you apply in advance and promise to compensate for the public facilities destroyed in the duel, the Mage Parliament will allow this way to resolve conflicts."
Adam seemed to understand. The Mage Parliament was probably the ruling body of the Mage Plane. In this world where there were obviously extraordinary individuals, the laws that were targeted at commoners on Earth were obviously not easy to enforce. The mages also seemed to be unwilling to spend time on maintaining balance and upholding justice. So, it was normal for there to be something similar to the 'judicial duel' invented by the ancient Germans on Earth.
What was this? Barbarism in civilization? Or was it a civilization maintained by barbarism?
The driver asked curiously, "Duels are not allowed on the deserted island? Then what do you use to resolve conflicts? "
Quentin sneered, "Duels. Only nobles can initiate duels …" At this point, he stopped. Adam was a commoner, but so were Randy and Corestal. It was not good to continue.
But this was enough for the driver to understand. He did not express anything about being a commoner. Instead, he said, "There are no nobles on the Mage Continent. There are only commoners and mages. The only restriction on duels is that mages cannot initiate duels against commoners. "He paused for a moment and continued," Offending a mage is a capital offense. Of course, no one is as stupid as commoners. "
The rest of the journey was silent. Soon, they arrived at their destination.
The teleportation circle was in a strange building that was very scientific and mystical. Adam could not describe it with words because it seemed to be changing all the time.
"Visual deception caused by the interference of space-time?" Adam could only analyze it this way. Everything he had seen and heard since coming here was beyond his knowledge. The incomplete knowledge he brought from Earth did not seem to be of much use.
The levitating car left on its own. Adam and the rest walked into the building under the guidance of the mages. The place looked very lively. There were many people coming and going at every moment. Their unique energy fields intertwined, causing all the apprentices to feel extremely uncomfortable.
It was a kind of helplessness when facing a higher level of life.
When a mage was alone, most of them could perfectly restrain their field. This was a method to avoid unnecessary energy consumption. It was also a protection for commoners. But when there were multiple mages or low-level mages in a space facing off against higher-level mages, their field would spontaneously expand. This was probably a kind of unique proof of identity and class.
After entering the building, the four mages of Moldova College seemed to be a little humble. From time to time, they would stop and bow to the higher-level mages passing by. The apprentices were also trembling with fear. They were afraid that their actions would infuriate the mages and bring disaster to themselves.
As they walked in, Mage Black lowered his voice and said, "All the teleportation circles belong to the Holy Tower of the Second Elemental. It is the property of the great Grand Necromancer Randolph. You have to be humble. We will meet the mages of the Holy Tower later. Remember, do not speak."
This was the first time Mage Black had solemnly asked. No one dared to question him. The consequence of disrespect was death. No one wanted to die.
After turning a corner and passing through a curtain of light, they finally saw the teleportation circle. It was a pattern made entirely of runes. Each rune contained a strong magic power. It seemed to be floating in front of them, but it was illusory and untouchable. Ether from the Void was continuously injected into the runes. Facing this magic circle, everyone's soul trembled. Adam was very sure that any one of the runes could destroy the apprentices a hundred times over.
The person in charge of the magic circle was a mage whose face could not be seen clearly. Just like the magic circle, he seemed to be standing between reality and illusion. "Moldo's Elemental Tower? Is that right? "
After the four mages bowed, Mage Black respectfully said, "Yes, esteemed mages of the Holy Tower." He took out a complete Ether crystal from an unknown place and handed it to the mage of the Holy Tower.
