Chapter 16: Mr. and Mrs. Doctor
Chapter 16: Mr. and Mrs. Doctor
Now that their truth was out, everything had changed—for the better. No more hiding, no more secret glances, no more unexplained disappearances. Reet and Abeer were no longer just classmates; they were a married couple who had faced a lot together.
And now… everyone knew it.
The whispers had turned into warm smiles, the side-eyes had turned into supportive pats on the back, and the canteen, which once held silence between them, now echoed with laughter and shared chai.
They would sit together during lunch, share bites from each other’s plates, talk about their future plans, and smile just a little more than they used to. Abeer always made sure Reet had her favorite tea on the table, and Reet always saved the last bite of her sandwich for him.
One afternoon, as they were sitting under the tree beside the college lawn, Abeer looked at her and said, “Reet, I was thinking… once we’re officially doctors, let’s not just stop there.”
Reet turned to him, curious. “What do you mean?”
“I mean… let’s start something of our own. Maybe a clinic, and then one day, a hospital. Together. We’ll grow together.”
Reet’s eyes sparkled. “That sounds like a dream.”
“No,” he smiled, “It is our future.”
They sat there, watching the sun go down, holding onto that thought like a little promise between them.
The day of their Convocation arrived.
Everyone was dressed in their best. Caps, gowns, certificates. Dreams being celebrated in full glory.
As they walked hand in hand across the college ground, classmates and teachers surrounded them with congratulations.
“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Abeer!”
“You guys look perfect together!”
“Doctor Sahab, and Doctor Bhabhi!”
“Future hospital owners!”
Reet blushed. “Abeer! Look what they’re calling me!”
He laughed, “They’re right… Congratulations, Dr. Reet Abeer Malhotra.”
She looked at him with a wide grin. “And congratulations to you too, Dr. Abeer Malhotra.”
They bumped their foreheads together in a light, playful moment, and stood silently for a second, soaking it all in.
After the convocation, they returned home—this time as professional doctors, with degrees in hand, heads full of dreams, and hearts even fuller.
Their parents were there, waiting at the doorstep. Their mothers didn’t say much, but the moment still felt warm. At least they were proud—if not expressive.
Back in their room, Reet placed her certificate on the table and looked at Abeer.
“So... what’s next, Mr. Doctor?”
He smirked. “Next… we start building our world. Together.”
