Chapter 20: Dreams, Dizziness, and a Little Suspense
.....
Three years had passed since Abeer and Reet got married.
From strangers to classmates, to secret soulmates… now they were a power couple. It had also been a full year since they started working in different hospitals as doctors — learning, growing, and saving every rupee with one dream: their own hospital.
And that dream was finally taking shape.
That evening, they stood side by side at the construction site. The grey pillars of their future stood tall before them — half-built but full of hope.
“It still feels unreal,” Reet said, adjusting her dupatta as the wind blew dust through the air.
Abeer smiled. “Next year, this will be ‘Dr. Malhotra Hospital’. Are you ready?”
Reet chuckled softly, but her smile faded as she held her forehead. A sudden wave of dizziness hit her.
“Reet?” Abeer held her quickly. “What happened? Are you okay?”
She blinked. “Yeah… just tired.”
“Are you on your period?”
“No,” she said, confused herself. “Not even close.”
Abeer looked at her for a second. A long second. Their eyes locked, questions hanging between them… then both looked away, pretending not to overthink.
Back at home, Reet tried to ignore the light-headedness. But the next morning, she struggled to even stand straight.
Abeer didn’t wait. “We’re going to the hospital.”
“No, it’s nothing—”
“I said let’s go.”
They drove to the hospital where it all started — their internship, their friendship, their beginning.
Blood tests. Scans. Questions from the doctor. Silence in the waiting room. Reet lay on the bed, looking at the ceiling. Abeer sat beside her, fingers tapping his knees nervously.
A nurse walked in with the file.
The doctor flipped through the pages. Looked at them once. Then again.
And then he said something…
