Chapter 21 : The Third Heartbeat

The hospital room was quiet, but Reet and Abeer could hear their own heartbeats pounding in their ears.

The doctor had just confirmed it.

“You’re going to be parents,” he said with a soft smile, handing over the report.

Reet blinked. Abeer looked at her. Neither of them spoke for a few seconds.

And then… a shared, stunned smile. A laugh that started nervously… and ended with wonder.

They walked out of the hospital like two people floating. The world around them kept moving, but theirs had just changed forever.

Back at home, Reet sat on the edge of the bed, and Abeer knelt in front of her, holding her hand tightly.

“You really think this is… that?” he asked, still dazed.

She smiled gently. “The doctor said that.”

Abeer looked down, then up at her again. “Are we ready?”

Reet took a deep breath. Then nodded. “Yes… I think we are.

They both stared at each other, laughter and tears threatening to spill out all at once. Then—

“Congratulations,” Abeer whispered, wrapping his arms around her.

“Congratulations to you,” Reet smiled into his shoulder.

He pulled back just a little and kissed her forehead softly. She leaned forward and did the same — planting a gentle kiss on his forehead.

“Congratulations, Papa,” she said, voice full of love and softness.

His eyes shimmered. “And congratulations, Mumma.”

From that day on, Abeer changed. His care, his attention — it doubled.

He didn’t let her carry anything heavy. He made sure she ate on time. He texted her every few hours to ask if she was okay.

Even while working at the clinic, his mind was always partly with Reet.

And Reet? She was glowing. With love. With life.

Their journey, which had started with forced silence and awkward glances, had now reached a place of shared smiles and secret kicks inside the womb.

A new heartbeat had joined their love story.
