Volume 3, Chapter 358 – Rescue

Inside the Chi Residence, Chi Jingwen’s gaze swept past the Chi family’s formation and out toward the distance.

The battle between Wei Qingyu and the wolf demon was still ongoing.

When two Sixth Realm cultivators clashed at full force, the tremors could be felt across the entire city.

“Strange…” Chi Jingwen murmured to himself. “Why isn’t the wolf demon running?”

“What are they trying to do?”

After the wolf demon had escaped from the Demon Suppression Bureau earlier, it had gone to ground inside the Beihe Commandery offices and kept an extremely low profile. The only time it had acted was under the cover of a formation, to assassinate Lu Guan of Lingxiao Sword Sect.

But this was different.

From the moment the wolf demon appeared tonight, it had done nothing else. It was almost as though it had deliberately exposed itself to draw Wei Qingyu and him into a fight.

Chi Jingwen could not make sense of the wolf demon’s purpose.

“Family Head.” The warrior Mu Wu spoke in a low voice. “The wolf demon’s cultivation is on par with Inspector Wei’s. With only Inspector Wei, it will be difficult to capture it.”

“Do you need me to take some men over to assist?”

Chi Jingwen was silent, his eyes narrowed as he gazed into the distance.

“Tell me… could the wolf demon suddenly surfacing tonight have anything to do with what came before?”

“Is the one pulling the strings finally showing themselves?”

Suddenly, Chi Jingwen’s brow shot up. A realization struck him.

“Go and check on Chi Muxue right now. What is she doing?!”

The words had barely left his mouth when a tremendous crash rang out, and the entire Chi Residence shuddered.

Chi Jingwen’s expression changed. As the family head and the one presiding over the Chi family’s formation, he could sense it directly. Someone was attacking the formation.

“Who dares act so brazenly against the Chi family!”

He flashed upward in an instant, appearing above the residence.

His command rang out far and wide.

“Chi family warriors! Hold the formation!”

“Prepare for battle!”

A faint crack reached his ears.

Chi Jingwen went still for a moment.

As the one presiding over the formation, he knew exactly what that sound meant.

Someone had punched a hole through the Chi family’s formation.

And he had not even caught sight of who had done it.

How had it happened so fast?

Even the master formation master who had originally laid this formation would not have been able to break through it this quickly.

That meant whoever had come possessed a mastery of formations far beyond the one who had laid the Chi family’s array.

Why would a formation master of that caliber be targeting the Chi family?

Could this truly be the work of the mysterious hand that had been scheming against them from the shadows?

If so, then everything would fall into place. The suspicions Chi Jingwen had held before would finally be confirmed.

He drew a slow breath and steadied the flutter in his chest.

“Mu Wu, your movement technique is the best among us. Go and inform Inspector Wei of what is happening here.”

“The rest of you, come with me. We are going to root out whatever rat has slipped into the Chi Residence.”

Mu Wu offered no objection and departed at once.

A formation master, like an alchemist, poured all their effort into their craft, which left their personal combat strength lacking. The Chi family was still a dominant power in Beihe Commandery, with no shortage of strong fighters in residence. They were no match for a behemoth like a sword sect, but one formation master alone could not simply waltz in and do as they pleased.

Of course, the strength or weakness of the Chi Residence’s defenses had very little to do with Lu Zhuxin.

She had changed her clothes, shedding her earlier disguise.

White robes, white hair, and a silver mask over her face.

She had lived in this residence long enough to have memorized every guard post and every corner of its layout.

Her formation mastery buff had not yet expired. With her grandmaster-level command of formations, slipping past Chi Jingwen’s senses and carving a small opening at the outer edge of the Chi family’s array was no difficult task.

While the Chi family’s fighters stood on high alert, grimly scanning the perimeter for a powerful intruder, Lu Zhuxin was already strolling through the inner courtyard at a leisurely pace, heading straight for the run-down dwelling where Bu Lianshuang was being held.

The commotion earlier had been deliberate.

Knowing Chi Jingwen’s temperament, he would rush to check on Chi Muxue’s courtyard at once. The derelict house where Bu Lianshuang was kept was far from Chi Muxue’s courtyard, which meant it was well out of Chi Jingwen’s sight and hearing.

Inside the abandoned dwelling, Bu Lianshuang had heard the noise from outside.

“That aura… is the Elder fighting a human cultivator?”

“What is going on out there?”

Bu Lianshuang recalled that Lu Zhuxin had mentioned borrowing someone from her before. She trusted that Lu Zhuxin would not gamble with the lives of wolf clan members. The fox clan’s ability to conceal their movements was unmatched in the world. Under the fox clan’s protection, it would be nearly impossible for a human to discover the wolf clan elder.

“So the Elder’s actions must have been at the fox clan’s direction.”

“Is it Xin’er? Is she scheming something again?”

Thinking of Lu Zhuxin, a flicker of longing rose in Bu Lianshuang’s chest.

Wolf clan members were used to enduring harsh conditions of all kinds. By rights, the damp cold of this abandoned house should have meant nothing to her.

Yet Bu Lianshuang had never imagined that being locked here alone could be this tormenting.

Since the night she had killed Lu Guan of Lingxiao Sword Sect, she had not seen her beloved fox young miss for a long time.

Perhaps it had not truly been that long. But the days without seeing her fox young miss felt to Bu Lianshuang like an eternity.

Xin’er… is she alright…

These past few days, has that old wretch Chi Jingwen been finding new ways to make things difficult for her…

Has her whereabouts been discovered by the Demon Suppression Bureau…

And that woman Chi Xiyan, has she been coming around at night to bother her…

“Ugh…” The thought of Chi Xiyan made Bu Lianshuang’s stomach lurch.

Even though Lu Zhuxin had explained everything clearly, every time Bu Lianshuang thought of that woman, she still felt deeply unsettled.

She really wanted to tear that woman’s face off.

“Haah… when am I ever going to get out of here…”

Bu Lianshuang let out a long, drawn-out sigh.

“I didn’t realize that after only a few short days apart, Your Highness would miss me this much.”

“Xin’er!”

Bu Lianshuang heard the familiar voice and sprang to her feet in delighted surprise. She pushed the door open and stepped outside, and there was the familiar girl standing in the courtyard.

White robes, white hair, a silver mask over her face.

“Xin’er, how did you get here?!” Bu Lianshuang asked quickly. “What happened outside? I could feel the commotion even through the formation.”

“ Mm , a minor situation came up.” Lu Zhuxin looked Bu Lianshuang over from head to toe. “I’m sorry, Your Highness. You’ve suffered these past few days.”

“I’m fine.” Bu Lianshuang shook her head repeatedly, then added, “Compared to that night, when you had to play along with that woman… what I went through is nothing.”

As Bu Lianshuang spoke, a shadow crept back into her eyes.

She would never forget what Chi Xiyan had put her fox young miss through that night.

“…” Lu Zhuxin watched as Bu Lianshuang’s fist clenched again.

She had a feeling this little wolf had gotten the wrong idea about something.
