Volume 3, Chapter 406 – Chi Xiyan’s Dream
“I found you, little Xiyan!”
Lu Zhuxin submerged her own consciousness into the dream bubble.
Actually, she was a little curious what Chi Xiyan feared most.
This girl was the Heaven-Mandated Female Lead under her pen, but the original text was, after all, an erotic novel, and it never delved deep into the characters’ backgrounds.
Lu Zhuxin understood this character’s personality and knew her secrets, yet she had no idea about her upbringing.
Lu Zhuxin raised her head and moved forward. Everything in sight was a sea of crimson.
It was a purgatory, crimson lotus karmic flames blotting out the sky.
“Fire! Put out the fire!!”
“Help! Why won’t this fire go out!!”
“This isn’t ordinary fire! This is true crimson lotus flame!!”
“Who is it! Who is it really! Who wants to destroy my Chi family!”
The entire Chi family had descended into chaos, screams and cries for help gradually swallowed by the sea of flames.
“So this is what Chi Xiyan fears most?”
Lu Zhuxin felt a chill.
She was standing right in the middle of a sea of fire, yet the entire dream, inside and out, radiated a sense of cold.
Lu Zhuxin was a fox demon, and fox demons were not affected by the environment of a dream.
She could feel the heat, and she could feel the cold, both of which were manifestations of the dreamer’s emotions.
But the cold radiating from within this blazing fire went entirely against common sense.

“Strange.” Lu Zhuxin looked puzzled. “When the Chi Family Ancestral Home burned to the ground, Chi Xiyan should have still been too young to remember, right?”
“How could she remember any of this?”
The icy crimson flames carried an air of deathly stillness.
Everywhere she looked was scorched earth.
Lu Zhuxin instinctively pulled her clothes tighter. She clicked her tongue and walked forward.
At the far end of the sea of fire lay two bodies, a man and a woman.
The woman was dressed splendidly, while the man wore tight fighting attire.
The two bodies lay side by side on the ground, surrounded by roaring flames and flickering firelight, but their faces were twisted beyond recognition.
Still, based on the dream, Lu Zhuxin could guess who they were.
These two were likely Chi Xiyan’s birth parents.
That woman was likely Chi Jingwen’s younger sister, Chi Jingyun.
Then who was Chi Xiyan’s birth father?
Lu Zhuxin looked toward the man’s corpse.
He wore tight fighting attire, and beside him lay half of a broken blade.
He didn’t look like some noble young master. He looked more like a guard.
Chi Xiyan’s biological aunt was surnamed Qin, so her birth father should also be surnamed Qin.
From the looks of it, had a guard by Chi Jingyun’s side married into the Chi family?

“Tsk tsk. So, what Chi Xiyan fears most deep down is the crimson lotus karmic flame that took her birth parents away that year?”
Lu Zhuxin clicked her tongue softly and looked at Chi Xiyan, who stood beside the two bodies with a blank expression.
She stared blankly at the two bodies before her, her eyes dull and gray, without a trace of light.
Lu Zhuxin walked slowly to Chi Xiyan’s side and waved a hand in front of her face.
Chi Xiyan showed no reaction at all.
Lu Zhuxin understood then. In this dream, Chi Xiyan could not see her.
Chi Xiyan could only see what existed within her own dream.
“Still. Knowing that girl’s temperament, would Chi Xiyan really be trapped by such a simple dream?”
The moment this question surfaced in Lu Zhuxin’s mind, the Chi Xiyan before her lifted her head.
She took a step forward, and the scene before her began to change rapidly.
The sky filled with fire vanished, replaced by a brand new study.
Lu Zhuxin saw that Chi Xiyan had become a little girl.
She was held close by Qin Qingfen, head lowered, sniffling softly.
Chi Jingwen sat before the desk. He slammed a book down onto the table, his eyes cold. “You’re already this old, and you still can’t read all the characters.”
Qin Qingfen said hurriedly, “Please calm your anger, my lord. This servant will teach the young miss properly!”
Chi Jingwen never once looked at Chi Xiyan the entire time. He said coldly, “Next month’s assessment at the study hall. If she’s still like this, she doesn’t need to remain a young miss of the Chi family.”
Hearing this, Qin Qingfen said hastily, “That won’t happen! It won’t! The young miss is very clever! She’s just young and a bit too fond of play!”

As she spoke, she took hold of Chi Xiyan’s hand. “Young miss, quickly promise your father! Promise you won’t play around anymore!”
The young Chi Xiyan lifted her head, her face streaked with tears.
“Father! I promise, I won’t play around anymore.”
Lu Zhuxin’s brows furrowed as she watched.
Soon, the surroundings shifted again.
This time, the scene became Chi Xiyan’s own room.
It was still the young Chi Xiyan and a younger Qin Qingfen.
Qin Qingfen held a ruler and struck it hard across Chi Xiyan’s palm.
“Look at what you’ve done!”
“Do you still want to reclaim your mother’s estate?!”
“How many times have I told you! You’re not like other people!”
“You must seize back what belongs to you from Chi Jingwen’s hands!”
“Look at what you look like right now! If your mother saw you like this, how disappointed she would be!”
The young Chi Xiyan cupped her reddened palm, tears sliding down her cheeks in fat drops.
Lu Zhuxin said nothing. Her furrowed brow only tightened further.
The scene shifted once more.
It became the Chi family’s training grounds.

Chi Xiyan had grown a little older. She held a sword, its blade pointed at a young man.
The young man looked slightly older than Chi Xiyan. His body was covered in sword wounds, and his face was full of terror as he stared at her.
The young Chi Xiyan spoke coldly in her childish voice. “Do you concede?”
The young man bit his lip until it bled. He lowered his head. “I’m sorry, eldest miss! I was wrong! I shouldn’t have spoken ill of you behind your back!”
The young Chi Xiyan swept a cold glance over the boy before her. She lowered her eyes slightly and sheathed her sword.
She turned her back to him and spoke in her childish voice with an air far too old for her years. “If you have the energy to be jealous of others’ birth behind their backs, you’d do better to spend it honing your own swordsmanship.”
“Otherwise, next time you lose to a nine year old child again, don’t go around telling people you’re a disciple of the Chi family. The Chi family can’t afford to lose that much face.”
The young man’s body trembled.
Once Chi Xiyan finished speaking, she walked slowly down from the training platform under the gaze of countless onlookers.
Qin Qingfen hurried up to her, her face full of delighted surprise.
“Xiyan! You did wonderfully!”
“Chi Yuan is the most talented person in this generation of the Chi family! You beat him! No one at the study hall is your match anymore!”
The young Chi Xiyan pressed her lips together and asked quietly, “If I beat him, will Father finally look at me differently?”
“He will!” Qin Qingfen said, taking Chi Xiyan’s hand. “As long as you keep performing well enough and earn his trust, reclaiming your mother’s inheritance will only be a matter of time!”
Chi Xiyan clenched her small fists. “But. Isn’t the Chi family Father’s to begin with?”
Hearing this, Qin Qingfen’s expression changed abruptly. “What nonsense are you saying! The Chi family belongs to your mother! Chi Jingwen used underhanded schemes to seize it away!”
“He is the one truly responsible for your parents’ deaths!”
