Captain – Chapter 105 – Current Situation

Morning light streamed through the fluttering curtains into the dark room, extending along the soft fur carpet all the way to the goose-yellow bed.

Feeling the slight brightness on his face, Caine’s tightly closed eyelids trembled a few times before slowly opening. His sea-blue eyes showed no trace of drowsiness or confusion.

Due to military discipline and family influence, he always woke up at the first light of day. This habit hadn’t changed in the slightest even now.

Rising with gentle movements, the first mate adjusted his slightly disheveled shirt. Recalling last night’s intimacy and conversation with the young woman, he instinctively looked toward the still-dreaming girl.

Unlike this former military officer, the captain, accustomed to a free and undisciplined life, always slept until the sun was high in the sky before getting up, and that was only when she had affairs to attend to.

Caine’s gaze couldn’t linger on the young woman’s face for too long because there were more eye-catching places.

Roy was wearing the poorest quality, most inexpensive low-necked short-sleeved shirt. Now lying slightly on her side, the neckline of her pale yellow shirt had slipped askew, revealing a large expanse of fair skin, and…

Shifting his gaze somewhat unnaturally, Caine reached out to pull up the neckline for the young woman, covering that glimpse of spring scenery.

Feeling the slight itch of rough fabric brushing against her neck, Roy’s long eyelashes trembled slightly before she opened her drowsy eyes. Seeing Caine withdrawing his hand from her shirt collar, it didn’t take her long to understand what had happened.

So her lips curled into a lazy smile as she asked in a soft voice: “Did you enjoy the view?”

“I didn’t see anything.” The first mate’s answer was self-incriminating. He pulled back the curtain, walked to the coat rack to take his outer garment and put it on, then habitually drew back the light-blocking curtains, letting the morning sunlight flood the entire room.

Roy squinted her eyes to adjust to the light and sat up yawning: “So dishonest.”

Caine shook his head helplessly. Even now, he still found it difficult to accept the captain’s direct and revealing way of expression. After all, in the Empire, every aristocratic young lady he had encountered was reserved and courteous.

“Captain, please get dressed quickly. I’ll go buy some breakfast.”

“I know, I know. You don’t need to report such small matters in the future.” Roy waved her hand, like a noble young lady dismissing her butler.

After revealing their identities, they naturally didn’t need to spend a penny on daily necessities. The servants of the Banshee’s Eye had prepared breakfast and toiletries early.

Taking a bite of white bread with cheese, Roy looked at the table full of desserts and drinks, and contentedly let out a light breath: “This is the life. Although money comes fast at sea, it’s really not fit for human living.”

“Captain, didn’t you always say the ocean is a pirate’s home?” Caine took a sip of steaming black coffee and casually asked while looking through the confidential reports collected by Cecilia from various channels.

“Uh, did I? Well, that’s an idea the Great Captain instilled in me. For me, if I could have endless money without having to go to sea to plunder, who would care about that broken sea full of weapons and cannons where you might lose your life at any moment?”

Roy shrugged, tossing a small cake embedded with hazelnuts into her mouth, asking indistinctly: “How’s the situation?”

“Still no news of the Mermaid.” The first mate shook his head, somewhat disappointed.

“As expected.”

Roy wasn’t surprised by this result. Without being able to use that undercover agent, Little Ceci couldn’t possibly know the Mermaid’s whereabouts.

“But there are also unexpected things.”

Caine’s gaze jumped between the lines: “Captain Solomon, who usually holds grudges, doesn’t seem to have the mind to cause us trouble. After the Constantine’s crew found the first mate who was selling their spoils in Yadris, they all returned to the Constantine at once, and there’s been no movement from them until now.”

“Are they just taking this loss?” The first mate frowned slightly as he looked at Roy, clearly not understanding.

According to pirates’ style of action, especially the habits of those unscrupulous fellows under Captain Solomon, in Yadris—which was gradually losing control—they couldn’t possibly watch their Fighting Squad leader die in vain, let alone die at a celebration banquet.

“Taking a loss? How could someone like Solomon be willing to take a loss?”

Powerful pirate captains always sought revenge, never letting it wait until the next day. Roy was like this, and Solomon Diggs was certainly the same.

Roy smiled coldly and said: “It’s just that for him, there are more important matters binding his feet right now, that’s all. After concluding that matter, he will naturally bring his men to find us, demanding information about us from the Banshee’s Eye.”

“But how can he ensure the proprietress will be willing to entertain him?” Caine asked, puzzled.

“Why…”

Roy sighed softly: “If it hadn’t been me doing this, or if it had been some acquaintance of Little Ceci’s, that girl might truly have handed over the information, of course, at a price—an enormous payment, or… a favor, either of which would make the Banshee’s Eye’s days much better.”

The captain was right. For that proprietress, as long as it didn’t involve her own interests, everything was tradable, regardless of whether it would bring catastrophic disaster to someone.

“Of course, trade is trade, but the blacklist still works. This is also an unwritten rule of the Banshee’s Eye.”

Roy, having eaten and drunk her fill, took a napkin to wipe her hands and smiled: “But since it was your captain who did it, we certainly don’t need to worry about Little Ceci selling us out. And even if Solomon doesn’t come looking for me, I won’t easily let him off after I reclaim the Mermaid.”

But you were just set up by that proprietress yesterday.

Caine silently criticized in his heart, not continuing this topic. As the captain said, since they were enemies, there was no need to care about revenge or not, as they would eventually confront each other anyway.

“According to the information provided by the proprietress, there’s still one day before your former bosun comes to the Banshee’s Eye to persuade her. So what do we need to prepare during these two days?”

Caine drained the black coffee in his white porcelain cup, organized the confidential reports in his hand, then turned his gaze to the young woman who was propping her cheek with her fist, looking utterly bored.

“Recruit people.” Roy unhurriedly uttered these two words.

“Recruit people?”

Caine’s brows furrowed again: “Isn’t this too hasty?”

Having caused trouble at the Banshee’s Eye just yesterday, and now openly recruiting people after just one night—this might attract the attention of certain interested parties. Moreover, in this uncertain situation, what name would they use to recruit people? Surely not the Osprey?

“It’s fine. The sooner we start, the sooner we finish. After all, we need quite a few hands, and we don’t have much time to waste here.”

Seeming to see through the first mate’s concerns, Roy’s tone was extremely relaxed. She smiled and added: “Besides, as long as there’s money to be made, who would care about what name is used?”

Thirty silver coins monthly, and that was just for sailors. Such treatment was indeed attractive enough, not to mention the share after plundering. Just in terms of benefits, the stakes Roy offered already far exceeded those of ordinary large pirate ships.

Thinking of this, Caine nodded and raised no further objections: “Then how many people do we need? So I can prepare mentally.”

“I don’t know how many usable people are still on the Mermaid, but to make my ship combat-effective, we’d need at least five hundred people…”

Without looking at the first mate’s suddenly grim face, Roy fiddled with her fingers and stated her requirements.

“Then let’s recruit three hundred people first, among them at least fifty must be good fighters.”
