Captain – Chapter 144 – A Council of Captains

“Captain Jeffrey, whom you know, and this is Hubert, captain of the Wave Breaker, who recently joined the covenant,” Diamond was introducing the two men to the young woman.

Black Cat Old Shop had only two guests today, and at this moment, Diamond was introducing them to the young woman.

Roy approached the council table in the center of the tavern, casually pulled out a chair and sat down. She nodded to Jeffrey, who was frowning slightly, then smiled at the other unfamiliar young man who was puffing heavily on a cigar: “Captain Hubert Fergus of the Wave Breaker, renowned in the Western Seas? It’s an honor to meet you.”

Hubert removed the cigar from his dry lips, slowly exhaling a puff of white smoke, and asked with interest: “Well, I’ll be damned. Young, promising, beautiful lady, are you also a member of the covenant? How is it I’ve never heard Captain Diamond mention you?”

“She’s not just a member, she’s the notary of the covenant. Without her, this alliance would never have been approved, let alone gained such great influence in Yadris,” Diamond explained as he sat down beside Roy.

Hearing the words “notary” from the old captain’s mouth, Jeffrey, who had been silently observing the young woman, raised his eyebrows. His gaze lingered momentarily on the raven perched on Roy’s shoulder leisurely grooming its feathers, then returned to her exquisite face.

“Captain Roy?”

Hearing Jeffrey’s incredulous call, Hubert’s fingers holding the cigar trembled, scattering bits of ash on the table. He looked toward Diamond in surprise, seemingly seeking confirmation from the old captain.

“Yes, Jeffrey, it’s her. Our Captain Roy has returned,” Snow Lion nodded slightly, then looked at the smiling young woman and asked, “So tell me, what do you need us to do? You didn’t come to find this old bag of bones just to reminisce, did you?”

Roy blinked, her smile dimming slightly, and asked with some confusion: “Shouldn’t we gather all the captains first?”

The tavern grew quiet. The three captains exchanged glances in silence. Finally, Diamond sighed softly and said dejectedly: “The covenant… there are only four of us left.”

“That’s impossible…”

The young woman’s gaze swept across the three faces, seeing their gloomy expressions, she frowned instinctively: “Even if Captain Xiu died at the hands of that little bastard, there should still be six of us.”

Not counting herself and the newly joined Captain Hubert, there were five people who had participated in the covenant in the past. These captains were without exception her staunch supporters, and Captain Xiu was the one who questioned her cause of death the most, which was why he was swiftly killed by the Blood-Eyed Butcher.

“Roy, it wasn’t just Xiu, but all those who followed him. They all died in that bloodbath.”

The old captain looked into the young woman’s dark golden pupils, saying with great remorse: “As well as those most loyal crew members you left in Yadris, they all perished on that rainy night. I’m very sorry, child. That butcher acted so quickly, by the time I realized what was happening, everything was already decided.”

“And after that, Captain Gale and Captain Francis withdrew from the covenant and left Yadris with their respective crews.”

After finishing, Diamond remained silent for a long time before trying to comfort her: “Blame me if you must, but don’t blame them. After all, as captains, we represent not just ourselves but must consider the lives and welfare of all our crew members.”

“No, how could I blame you? This all started because of me. If there’s any guilt, it should be borne by me alone,” Roy shook her head and said softly.

At this, the old captain frowned deeply, asking puzzledly: “What exactly went wrong between you and Richi, or rather, between you and those crew members?”

“Nothing went wrong, Captain Diamond. This was just an ordinary betrayal.”

Roy shrugged, leaning back in her chair with a lazy posture: “Perhaps the little bastard wanted to replace me, perhaps those fellows had been dissatisfied with me for a long time. But none of that matters. I never care about the reasons of traitors…”

After a moment’s thought, the young woman changed her tone: “Well, I am a bit curious about Richi’s reasons. But without a doubt, those who betrayed me will pay the price. They’ll taste the bitter fruit they’ve sown, and I will take back everything that belongs to me.”

“Of course, this requires a little help from all of you.”

Seeing the young woman’s nonchalant demeanor, Hubert and Jeffrey exchanged glances, then smiled: “Interesting. I came from the Western Seas just to see what you, whom Captain Enzo frequently mentions, look like. Now I see you truly haven’t disappointed me.”

“I’m very curious how you plan to deal with the Mermaid. Neither my Wave Breaker nor Captain Diamond’s Lion Heart is a match for that warship on the vast sea. Or perhaps you hope the three of us will join forces to help you…”

“Wait, sir,” Jeffrey interrupted Hubert’s words. He sat up straight, looking at Roy apologetically: “Forgive me for saying this, Captain Roy, but I stayed mostly because I owe Captain Diamond a favor. I’m willing to help him solve some troubles and join forces with his crew to protect his safety, but that doesn’t include fighting against the Mermaid.”

“Relax, Captain Jeffrey. Those traitors are my prey, and you needn’t interfere. The help I hope to receive is just some easy tasks without risk,” Roy smiled reassuringly.

Jeffrey’s gaze flickered for a moment, then he slowly nodded and silently sank back into his chair.

Seeing no one else objecting, Roy smiled with satisfaction: “What I want you to do is very simple. When I confront Richi, please assist my crew in taking control of the entire Yadris, blocking all exits of the council hall, and controlling everyone associated with Richi. With Captain Diamond’s methods and information channels, I believe this isn’t a difficult task.”

“Yes, it sounds like a boring task. How hard could it be?” Hubert exhaled a cloud of smoke and said, “But Captain Roy, this seems somewhat at odds with what you said earlier. Controlling the Blood-Eyed Butcher’s confidants hardly seems risk-free.”

“Oh, then may I ask, Captain Hubert, which part of this task involves risk?”

“The problem isn’t with the task, but with you.”

Hubert pointed at the young woman with his burning cigar, smiling lightly: “If after this war ends, it’s not you who returns, but Captain Richi, he won’t easily let our actions go unpunished.”

“So that’s what you’re worried about.”

Roy was also smiling, her eyes narrowing, dark golden pupils emitting a dangerous light: “Captain Hubert, you don’t know me, which is why you ask this question. But both Captain Diamond and Captain Jeffrey understand one thing clearly…”

“And that is, I will definitely win.”
