Captain – Chapter 162 – The Wheel of Fate, Rolling On

The curved blade traced an elegant arc, cleanly slicing across the throat of the person before her.

A brilliant spray of blood flashed and vanished, accompanied by a wheezing “huh-huh” sound like a broken bellows. The once ferocious thug collapsed to the ground, becoming yet another stepping stone on the girl’s path forward.

Roy breathed rapidly, her gaze quickly sweeping across the battlefield, watching those pirates whose eyes were filled with terror yet still recklessly charging forward. She cursed through gritted teeth: “Madmen.”

Cassius had guessed correctly—the reason she chose the most direct yet physically taxing method of frontal combat was to intimidate through sheer brutality, aiming to shatter the enemy’s morale.

In Roy’s view, pirates were greedy for wealth and afraid of death. If she could demonstrate enough intimidation, killing until they were terrified, this encirclement would naturally collapse without further effort.

But the scene before her clearly exceeded her expectations.

These Fighting Squad members seemed bewitched, each embracing a do-or-die determination, not leaving her even a single opening for breakthrough.

This meant her plan had completely failed, forcing her into an extremely dangerous situation.

Feeling several gazes from above, Roy clenched her silver teeth and charged toward the mass of pirates ahead, where heads crowded together with no end in sight.

Only by hiding among the crowd could she maximize her chances of avoiding that fateful gun.

“It’s almost over.”

Watching the girl’s increasingly sluggish movements, Cassius leaned against the fore topmast, arms crossed, smiling casually, as if appreciating the grand finale of a tragedy.

Time ticked away second by second, but the changes the young man had been wary of never came.

The wooden hatch to the deck remained closed. That strange civilian vessel still trailed behind the Mermaid. The marksman on the main mast’s crow’s nest constantly sought the devil’s weak spot, and despite the girl having several close brushes with death, he showed no signs of switching sides.

Captain Roy’s stamina was rapidly fading. In a few more minutes—no, immediately—she would collapse from exhaustion and become a ghost under the pirates’ blades.

Everything was so perfect—too perfect to seem real, more like a beautiful tragedy orchestrated by Cassius himself.

With this thought, the composed smile on Cassius’s lips grew increasingly radiant, eventually tinged with madness.

He thoroughly enjoyed this vengeful ecstasy. He wanted to make the girl regret in her final moments—regret not valuing him, even mocking and suppressing him merely because of his attire and demeanor!

Finally, he witnessed the scene he had longed for—the climax of the entire tragedy.

Roy’s advancing steps halted. After barely parrying several curved blades coming at her, the pirates suddenly scattered to both sides, leaving a path for someone to pass through—like the road to hell described in sacred texts, situated between countless devil statues.

On that hellish path stood the current Fighting Squad Captain of the Mermaid, the bear-like robust Fern.

This nearly two-meter-tall giant smiled coldly, raising his curved blade—a size larger than those of other pirates—and brought it down on the girl’s head. The piercing sound of the blade cutting through air displayed his unparalleled strength, as if intending to cleave the devil in two with a single stroke!

“Clang!”

Roy barely managed to block with her sword when that tremendous force sent her staggering back several steps. The pale palm supporting the blade’s back split open with a deep gash, bright red blood staining half her arm.

But ignoring the tearing pain, Roy desperately jerked her head aside. The moment she moved, a brilliant flash ignited from the fore topmast. A silver-gray lead bullet, carrying the heavy scent of gunpowder, grazed past the girl’s forehead.

After splashing a small flower of blood, the crimson flow ran down her cheek, over Roy’s left eye, making it painfully difficult to keep open.

Time seemed to slow down. Everything around gradually froze. Roy felt her vision becoming increasingly blurry, her chest tight, even breathing became unbearably heavy.

The girl forcefully wiped her aching left eye. The scene before her resembled a vortex, constantly distorting and shifting.

As if time were flowing backward, she saw her past, saw herself step by step transforming from a legendary pirate of fearsome reputation back into that timid child.

What was this—memories before death?

A bitter smile appeared at the corner of Roy’s mouth. She knew she had reached her limit. Fighting a hundred enemies alone was impossible from the start. Even if she turned back into a man, returning to her prime, she couldn’t possibly kill all these people.

Only if she were still her original self, perhaps she would have had a chance to reach Richi…

The girl thought silently, watching the sea of fire flashing before her eyes, seeing herself battered and barely alive, holding her mother’s corpse. Then further back, she saw her gently smiling mother again, saw herself and her mother moving into that ranch owner’s manor.

These memories were so long, yet her body felt leaden, unable to move. But even if she could move, she probably couldn’t dodge a second shot, after all, it was judgment from the marksman…

Roy’s eyes gradually dimmed. She stared blankly ahead, her body swaying, ready to collapse at any moment.

“Farewell, dear Captain.”

Somehow, the smile on Cassius’s face had completely disappeared, leaving only calmness and solemnity.

At this moment, no matter how much he despised her, he instinctively addressed her as Captain, paying his respects to the departure of the Golden-Eyed Devil.

All the pirates thought and waited the same way, waiting for that fatal gun to descend from the heavens and pierce through the girl’s heart completely.

Only the young man was different.

Staring intently at those gorgeous and noble pupils, watching the silently burning flame in that already dimmed darkness, Richi’s blood-red eyes suddenly flashed with alertness. He stepped forward and looked up, hoarsely shouting at Victor hidden in the shadows: “Victor, what are you waiting for?”

No, these weren’t memories.

The scenes Roy saw didn’t stop at the moment of her earliest recollection but continued forward, as if unstoppably carried forward by the wheel of fate!

She saw her mother’s parting with… that bastard. That call seemed close to her ear, then the scene shifted, past that magnificent warship where that bastard stood, across the boundless sea, through black storm clouds and capes, to a completely unknown sea.

There, she saw the massive, pale blue-glowing ghost fleet, saw that inconspicuous small island, saw… the island’s master.

That person sat on his throne, eyes closed as if napping.

But the moment Roy’s gaze fell upon him, he suddenly opened his eyes, grinning wickedly at her, with dark golden pupils that seemed to have magma flowing within!

In the pitch-black rainy night, the already dimmed eyes lit up once more, growing increasingly intense as time flowed. The faint golden markings hidden on the back of the girl’s neck glowed brilliantly!

Simultaneously, the gunshot symbolizing judgment finally rang out.
